Trini's pov.
the sun was barely up when i woke, all soft light and hazy shadows spilling into my room, walls tinged with gold. i blinked slow, lashes heavy, body still half-asleep and tangled in the blankets, but something pulled me out of it, that restless feeling prickling under my skin. rubbed at my eyes, trying to shake the sleep away, and rolled over, face smushed into the pillow for a second before i managed to sit up. hair was a mess, all wild curls and knots, but i didn’t really care, too busy trying to get my eyes to focus.
room was quiet, window cracked a bit to let the breeze in, curtains swaying soft and slow. i shuffled out of bed, bare feet touching the cool floor with a little shiver, and padded over to the window, fingers curling around the edge to push it open wider. the air was crisp, smelled like leaves and morning dew, and i breathed in deep, letting it wake me up.
and that’s when i saw them.
two figures, standing by the gates, sunlight catching on dark hair and familiar eyes, and my breath caught hard, fingers tightening on the windowsill. for a second, i just stared, heart doing this wild, uneven thing in my chest, and then i was moving, tripping over the blanket and tugging at the door handle with fingers that wouldn’t stop trembling.
didn’t even bother with shoes, just bolted down the hallway in my sleep shirt and shorts, feet barely touching the floor and hair streaming behind me. the house was quiet, everyone probably still half-asleep, but i couldn’t stop, breath catching high in my throat and heart thundering so loud i could barely hear anything else.
lunawyn was in the kitchen, hair pulled back and a cup of tea in her hands, steam curling soft and sweet. she looked up when i burst in, eyes wide for a second before softening, and that little smile tugged at her lips, like she already knew.
“lunawyn!” i gasped, words tumbling out all jumbled and breathless. “they’re here! i saw them—they’re at the gate—dorian and marcus—”
she laughed soft, setting her cup down with a shake of her head, and that warm, gentle look didn’t leave her eyes, all fond and amused. “slow down, trini,” she said, voice soft but teasing. “take a breath, hm?”
i tried, gulping in air fast and probably looking a mess, hands fluttering uselessly and cheeks flushed. “but they’re here,” i insisted, words rushing out. “they really came—”
“i know,” she said, that smile widening a bit. “i saw them pull up earlier. figured you’d notice sooner or later.”
i blinked, mouth opening and closing for a second before i managed to find words. “and you didn’t tell me?” i half-whined, lips pulling into a pout without meaning to.
she chuckled, stepping closer to brush a hand over my wild curls, fingers gentle and soothing. “thought you could use the sleep,” she teased, tugging lightly at a tangle. “you were tossing and turning all night.”
heat flared in my cheeks, and i huffed, batting her hand away with a little grumble. “was not,” i mumbled, but it was weak at best, too busy trying to peek past her to the windows, hoping to catch another glimpse.
she just smiled, eyes all soft and fond, and gave me a little nudge towards the stairs. “go get cleaned up,” she said, still gentle. “can’t have you running out there looking like you fought a windstorm.”
i pouted harder, but she raised an eyebrow, lips twitching like she was trying not to laugh, and i knew better than to argue. “fine,” i sighed, dragging my feet a bit, but there was no real heat in it.
lunawyn’s eyes softened, hand brushing over my shoulder light and comforting. “they’ll wait,” she promised, voice warm. “take your time.”
i nodded slow, throat tight, and bit down on my lip, glancing back at her with a wobbly smile. “you’ll come with me, right?” i asked, voice small.
she chuckled, eyes warm and bright. “of course,” she said, soft and sure. “now go on, before they think you’ve run off.”
i huffed, cheeks warm, and turned quick, nearly tripping over the first step in my hurry. could hear her laugh behind me, soft and fond, and it settled some of the nerves in my chest, made my shoulders drop a bit looser.
shower was quick, water warm and fingers clumsy with how they scrubbed at my hair, trying to tame the curls into something that didn’t look like a bird’s nest. my hands were still shaking, heart a wild mess in my chest, and i had to pause a few times, press my palms flat against the sink to breathe slow and deep.
they really came.
dorian and marcus, here at the packhouse, probably waiting right now and thinking i’d forgotten or something. the thought made my cheeks flare hotter, fingers fumbling with the towel as i tried to dry off without tripping.
picked out a dress quick, soft blue and simple, tugging it on and brushing my fingers through my curls till they settled a bit better. stared at my reflection for a second, nerves twisting sharp, and chewed on my lip, trying to breathe slow.
the knock at the door nearly made me jump outta my skin, and i turned quick, heart stuttering hard. “y-yeah?” i called, voice all wobbly and thin.
“you done in there?” lunawyn’s voice, light and amused. “they’re waiting downstairs.”
oh. oh no.
“coming!” i squeaked, grabbing my shoes and tugging them on fast, nearly tripping over the rug in my rush to yank the door open. lunawyn was there, leaning against the wall with arms crossed, eyes bright and lips twitching with that amused little smile that always made me blush worse.
“you’re gonna fall if you keep rushing,” she teased, reaching to tug a bit of lint off my sleeve.
“am not,” i mumbled, cheeks all warm. “they’re waiting—”
“i know,” she chuckled, nudging me gentle. “go on.”
i hesitated, fingers twisting in the hem of my dress, and peeked up at her, lip caught between my teeth. “you’ll… you’ll come see me off, right?”
her eyes softened, hand brushing over my cheek light and comforting. “of course,” she promised, voice warm. “you couldn’t get rid of me if you tried.”
something in my chest eased at that, breath shuddering out slow, and i managed a wobbly little smile, fingers untangling from the fabric. “okay,” i whispered, voice small.
she squeezed my shoulder, gentle and sure, and turned me towards the stairs with a little push. “go on,” she teased, voice fond. “don’t keep them waiting.”
my legs felt wobbly, heart pounding wild and fast, but i forced myself to move, steps a bit unsteady as i made my way down. hallway stretched long and bright, sun spilling through the windows and pooling in warm patches, and my hands trembled, fingers curling tight in the hem of my dress.
and then i saw them—dorian, tall and solid with that easy grin, eyes warm and bright, and marcus next to him, arms crossed and lips twitching like he was trying not to smile.
dorian’s eyes lit up soon as he saw me, that grin widening, and he took a step forward, hand lifting in a little wave.
“trini!” he called, voice warm and bright, and something in my chest did this wild, fluttery thing, breath catching hard.
i bit down on a smile, cheeks warm, and took a shaky breath.
home.
