Lunawyn's POV.
The moon hung high in the sky, casting a soft glow through the large windows of the pack’s library. The air was cool, slipping in through the slightly open panes, rustling the edges of the old books lining the wooden shelves. The library was quiet—so quiet that I could hear the faint creak of the wooden floor whenever I shifted in my seat.
I sighed, leaning back against the cushioned armchair, glancing around at the empty space. I was the only one here, but that wasn’t surprising. It was late, and most of the pack had already retired for the night. Still, a part of me wished someone else was here. Maybe Luciano or Trini.
But I had come here with a purpose.
For days, I had been so caught up in this particular story, yet every time I tried to finish it, something would pull me away. Tonight, I had finally gathered the determination to read through to the end. I wasn’t leaving until I finished.
Pulling my legs up onto the chair, I rested the book on my thighs, one hand holding the edge of the page while my other propped up my head. The dim light overhead cast a warm glow over the words, making them easier to follow.
_"And as she stood at the edge of the cliff, the wind rushing past her, she knew there was no turning back. The choice had been made—there was only forward now."_
I smiled, caught up in the emotions of the story. There was something about the way the author wrote, the way they made every moment feel alive. It was like I was standing right there with the main character, feeling everything she felt.
A small shiver ran through me as another cold breeze swept in. I hugged my sweater tighter around myself but didn’t move from my spot. The library was peaceful, and even though it was chilly, I liked being here. It was one of the few places where I could be alone with my thoughts, without any interruptions.
Flipping another page, I let myself get lost in the words again. Each chapter was more captivating than the last, and before I knew it, I was nearing the final pages.
_"This is it,"_ I whispered to myself, stretching my arms before settling back down to read.
The last chapter didn’t go exactly how I expected. The ending took a different turn, one I hadn’t anticipated. My smile faded as I read through the final paragraphs, a small frown replacing it.
I closed the book slowly, running my fingers over the worn cover.
"Well… that was different," I muttered, tilting my head in thought.
It wasn’t bad, just unexpected. Maybe that was the point. Not all stories ended the way we imagined they would.
Standing up, I stretched my arms over my head, letting out a small yawn. "Time to sleep."
I placed the book back on the shelf where I had found it, running my fingers over the spines of the other books as I made my way toward the door.
The house was silent as I walked through the halls, my footsteps barely making a sound against the wooden floor. The warmth of my bed sounded inviting, and for the first time in a while, I felt at ease.
Tomorrow, I’d find another story to get lost in. But for now, I just wanted to rest.
I walked out of the library, the wooden door creaking softly as it shut behind me. The air in the hallway was warmer than in the library, but there was still a slight chill that clung to my skin. I didn’t mind it, though. It was late, and the silence that stretched through the packhouse was comforting in its own way.
The only sound was the soft padding of my bare feet against the wooden floor as I made my way toward the exit. I had left the pack’s main door open earlier when I told the guard I wanted to read in peace. I had promised to close it myself when I was done.
When I reached the entrance, I grabbed one of the doors, pulling it closed with a firm push. The heavy wood groaned as it slid into place. Then, I pulled the other door shut, making sure it was latched properly. The cool metal of the handle felt smooth under my fingers as I gave it a final check.
With that done, I turned back down the hallway, heading toward my room. The house was dimly lit, only a few lanterns left flickering along the walls. Most of the pack was asleep by now, and the quiet felt almost unnatural, like the house itself was resting.
By the time I reached my room, I was more than ready to crawl into bed. I pushed the door open, stepping inside and letting out a soft sigh. The space was just how I had left it—neat, simple, and comforting.
I reached for the hem of my sweater, pulling it over my head before slipping off the rest of my clothes. My body felt tired, and a hot shower sounded like the perfect way to end the night.
Walking into the bathroom, I turned on the water, waiting until it was just the right temperature before stepping in. The warmth washed over me instantly, relaxing every part of me. I let my eyes close for a moment, just enjoying the feeling of the water running down my skin, the steam curling around me.
I stayed under the water longer than I probably needed to, but I wasn’t in any rush. Nights like this—quiet, calm—didn’t happen often.
Eventually, I turned off the shower and grabbed my towel, wrapping it securely above my chest. My skin felt warm from the heat, and I could still feel the steam lingering in the air as I walked back into my room.
Opening my dresser, I pulled out a soft nightgown and slipped it on. The fabric was cool against my skin, and I ran my fingers through my damp hair, shaking out the excess water before making my way toward the bed.
I didn’t bother with the blankets at first. Instead, I just sat there for a moment, my mind drifting.
Trini.
I thought about her for a while, wondering how she was doing, if she was okay. We hadn’t talked much today, and for some reason, that left a strange feeling in my chest. She was strong, though. She could handle herself. Still, I couldn’t help but wonder.
I laid back, my head sinking into the pillow as I let my eyes trace the patterns on the ceiling. My thoughts felt slow, hazy, like I was trying to hold onto them, but sleep was already pulling me under.
My eyelids grew heavier, my breathing slowing.
I barely had time to think about anything else before sleep finally took over.
