Blood and death were the only two things I could see far and wide.
I knew I was in a pack house but I wasn't sure if it was mine. The dark haze that surrounded everything stopped me from seeing clearly.
I stumbled through a hallway, my feet leadiñg on as if it knew where I should be. I walked on, lead by a trance as I passed my splashes of blood on the floor, the walls, everywhere.
There was no one in sight, but I did hear voices. Voices that were in agony and pleaded for their lives.
It was all in my head, I told myself as primal fear gripped me in its urgent embrace. I tried to stop but my feet insisted otherwise and I shuffled forward as my eyes flew around the damage that was done.
"It wasn't supposed to be like this! You said we would be safe!" A panic voice let out in a room up ahead. Male and older.
From how far I could, I could hear the panic and fear lacing his words. The voice was vaguely familiar but just when I started to remember who it belonged to, it slipped down my consciousness before I could grip it.
"Sacrifices have to be made. Whether you like it or not." Another voice, a cynical sounding one said. This voice dripped with sick satisfaction and a shiver ran down my spine at its familiarity. But like before I couldn't pinpoint who the voice belonged to.
I tiptoed closer, my heart slamming in my chest and its harsh beats filling my ears almost as much as those agonizing voices did.
"You didn't tell me this would happen, I never would have agreed if I knew!" The panicked voice let out in a strangled yell.
"It is precisely because of your cowardly behavior that you were kept in the dark." The other voice said, low and sinister.
"You're... You're a psycho! A mad man! How can you be the moon goddess's creation?"
"I'm a powerful psycho..." I could almost hear the smile in the voice.
I pressed my ear against the door as it was closed tightly shut. With my breath held tight, I waited and listened.
"And I've been on top for years. That's the difference between us two, you're father amounted to nothing and so will you." The voice spat, venom dripping from the words said.
"No... No! Stay away from me!" The panicked voice screeched.
I pressed harder against the door trying to make out any conversation but all that came through was a tussle.
A crash, then something snapped. Loudly.
And for some reason the snap made a cold sweat run down my back. There was nothing but silence that I could clearly hear the blood rushing in my ears.
There was a creak just behind the door and the sinister voice called out.
"Been ease dropping are you?"
A strangled sound left my lips and I bolted upright on the bed. I was sweating all over and my silk nightie stuck to my very damp skin. My heart still slammed in my chest much like it did in the dream as I took in my surroundings.
I was still here, in my own room and on the bed. Nothing had changed.
Trent still slept on the same spot on the sofa, his quiet snores the only sound in the room.
It was late in the night, no dark blue hues mingling with the blackness of the night. It was pitch black now and from where I sat a gentle breeze fluttered across my still damp skin making me shiver.
Wait, breeze?
My eyes trailed across the room one more time to make sure I hadn't missed anything the first time. There was nothing that stood out to me.
I swallowed a lump in my throat and an audible gulp followed, being quiet loud in the near silent room.
My gaze landed on the window that was a crack open and that only intensified my fear.
As if mocking me, a large draft of wind pushed the window opened every accompanied by the sounds of crickets and other night critters.
I glanced to Trent who was still sleeping soundly and I didn't have the heart to wake him.
With the courage and bravery of the moon goddess herself, I shuffled off the bed making slow movements at a time for fear that something would jump out and get me.
And I winced everytime any of my movements caused the soft mattress to sink in.
Breath in... Then out. That had become my mantra as I took slow measured steps towards the window.
I nearly died of fear when I was a feet or so away and with my breath held I reached out and touched the cool, smooth surface of the window.
Nothing. There was nothing.
I cracked it another notch and was greeted with the dazzling night sky and nothing amiss.
I didn't know why my heart sank when I didn't find anything or anyone , like I would have been able to do anything if i had.
I pushed the window, moving it to close just as another draft of wind blew through the room. But this time it didn't come alone.
A lone piece of paper blew in and my curiosity got the best of me. I didn't live on the first floor and from up here, it was unlikely someone was hanging about. Unless it was for sinister reasons.
I close the window, making sure it was fully shut this time because I didn't want any repeats of what happened today. The dream I had was still fresh in my mind and everything seemed ready to jump at me.
Even a lone piece of paper, I thought wryly as I watched it flutter some more before settling at the foot of the bed.
With a wary glance at Trent, I tiptoed forward and grabbed the paper, before quietly getting back on the bed.
It was a letter and it was addressed to Wildfire.
