The pieces started connecting in my head and I couldn't help my mouth falling open as he eyed me.
My Father thought I was sleeping with Trent? He really thought I was sleeping with the man!
"I am not sleeping with Trent if that's what your implying." I stated, nostrils flared. How had I found myself in this situation? We had gone from talking about his anniversary to my sex life in two questions.
"For your sake I hope your telling the truth." He stated quietly.
What did that mean? For my sake?
"I am. You can go ask Tent yourself." I said, defending myself wildly. I knew Trent and I were close and I knew my Father knew it too with the way he watched everything that went in in the pack like a hawk but I didn't think Trent and I were that close.
As if he could read my mind, my father carried on.
"You too seem to be... Quite friendly with each other so what did you expect me to think?" He asked, his eyebrow raised as he leisurely leaned back on his chair.
"I am not sleeping with him."
"So you said. You don't need to defend yourself so much if you're telling the truth." He added after a moment, a small smile curving his lips as he did so.
What a jerk.
"I don't like the ridiculously close relationship you have with some low ranked guard." My Father all but spat, his words laced with enough venom that I was sure Trent would have flinched if he heard his tone.
"So do well to keep yourself in check. I don't want all those Alpha's and other important persons thinking my daughter is some kind of whore who has no respect for herself and is sleeping with people far below her rank. Are we clear?"
He looked at me expectantly as I stood still, his words running through my ears like quick sand.
"We're clear." I gritted out slowly.
"And if you are a whore, at least make yourself useful and charm some people that are at your rank and above. The more power for the pack, the better." He finished with a self satisfied smile and I almost gagged at how... How power oriented he was.
I had never noticed before but now, it was blazingly obvious that was all he cared about. And he didn't care who he went through to get it, be it his own pack members or his very own family.
"Which reminds me..."
Oh moon goddess, there's more?
"I hope you haven't forgotten our deal. Alpha Orion will be here soon enough and I hope you won't make a fool of me and do as I've said." He drawled out and I bit the inside of my cheek.
Shit! I don't even think about that douche bag anymore.
"I haven't forgotten." I said regardless.
"Alright. That's it, you can leave my office." He said, his whole mood switching up to uninterested in the blink of an eye.
I pivoted on my heels, and I soon as I did, I felt his heavy gaze on my back which nearly made me falter in my steps. His next words did make me falter.
"And Wyn?"
"Yes?"
"Did you receive anything, I mean these past few days?" He asked me. Another strange question.
"No, why?" I said, my mind flashing to the crumpled letter Luciano had written to me which I had taken good care to hide before leaving the room. Even Trent hadn't seen it.
"I was just curious. You can leave." He said again.
I hadn't turned around to face him during this exchange for fear that he would somehow see the lie on my face because I hadn't expected the question at all.
But he did sound sure that I had expected a letter, which made me curious. But I shoved all curiosity to the bottom of my mind and closed the door shut, and tight too. I would worry about that later.
I took several steps away from the office and was a good deal down the hallway before I sagged my shoulders and rolled them around. They were damn stiff.
I could finally breathe easier now as no one was eyeing me and watching my every move and waiting for me to slip up.
I stretched some more, then grimaced when I heard some of my bones cracking from lack of movement. A sign I needed to get rid of that statue stance I always had on when I was dealing with my Father.
Trent wasn't waiting out the door, and he wasn't in the hallway either which made me go back down to the kitchen in search of him. I met him there, much calmer thankfully and the kitchen and adjoining dining room were back in full swing. That deathly silence that had come over the place when my Father had come here was long gone.
"Hey, why didn't you come upstairs?" I asked, then plopped down on a chair next to him.
"Eh... I would've but your Father... And no offense, he scares the shit out of me sometimes." Trent told me and I shrugged.
"None taken. And besides, he scares the shit out of me too and I'm his daughter." I stated.
"Did you tell my Father about spending the night in my room to watch over me?" I blurted out without thinking and Trent's eyes widened like saucers.
My own eyes widened when he started choking on air. Air.
"Oh, um yeah. It's customary for a guard to report to the Alpha about their next course of action after security is breached and after orders were given. Your Father said I should watch you closely which was partially why I stayed." He explained calmly and I nodded.
Then why did my Father put it like Trent had literally volunteered to climb into bed with me? Was it to rile me up?
"Sorry I didn't tell you sooner, honestly, it slipped my mind." He apologized.
"It's okay."
"Now will you tell me what you're hiding from me?" Trent asked out of the blue and I paused.
