Cold sweat had started to form on my back as everyone stared at me, I felt like shrinking into nothing.
Alpha Vincent opened his mouth to say something else, and so did Alpha Magnus and I held my breath and waited for whatever it is they wanted to say, even though it made me want to chew my hand off.
Just then, my Father cleared his throat and he eyed me before he turned to Alpha Vincent.
"Okay, that's enough Vincent. I trust my daughter to know what to do." He told Alpha Vincent even though his eyes turned back to me the whole time he spoke. I knew that message was for me.
Translation; don't mess up when Orion shows.
And the dark look in his eyes shouted, or else. I blinked at him and he looked away. Point taken.
The table stretched into awkward silence with a person or two throwing sideways glances at me or Lykania before whispering to whoever was close.
"Let's move to the ballroom please." My Father stated, then rose from his seat at the head of the table. My Mother followed suit, then Lykania and begrudgingly me because I didn't want my Father to make a scene.
The others at the table rose as well and almost instantly the room became chatty as we all walked out.
I found myself in the company four, Layla, Simon, Varin and Lykania. That company soon turned to three as Lykania pushed passed me to get to our parents.
"Get out of my way." She huffed at a maid ahead, nearly ramming into two other maids immediately after. Her answering huff was enough for me to know she did not like that at all, and I saw her exchange words with them. But with the noise I couldn't hear or even make out much because people were blocking my line of vision.
"Wow, she's in a rush." Layla commented from beside me and I nodded slowly. The shewolf got to my chin and I could almost see the top part of her mass of black curls.
"Did she hurt you?" Simon mumbled quietly from beside me but he turned away after.
"No, I'm fine." It happens all the time, I wanted to say but held my tongue when I remembered these were the children of Alphas, and those Alpha's were my Father's friends. If I told people about the particular dynamic of our family, I wouldn't be surprised if my Father denounced me as his daughter if he found out.
"You seemed quite down during the dinner, are you okay?" I asked Simon and his eyes widened.
"Yeah, I noticed that too. All you were doing was staring down at your plate." Layla shot from my other side and Simon seemed to have gone pale.
"I- it's nothing." He let out sharply and avoided looking directly at me or Layla.
"It didn't seem like nothing." Varin said. His first words since he had been with us.
We were the last ones to enter the ballroom, and I immediately noticed how the chandeliers illuminated the place, casting yellow night on the floor below. It looked magical.
"I was just thinking." Simon said again and Varin raised a stark blond eyebrow.
"If you were, you wouldn't have said it was nothing and told us straight away but since you didn't, I can only assume that you are lying now as well." Varin said and Simon's nostrils flared.
"Fuck off, Varin."
"Woah, woah, woah, calm down this isn't the time to fight." Layla scolded as the boys squared off against each other. They were the same age and both heirs to their packs and I understand their whole fight for dominance bullshit. But that doesn't mean I'll stand for something like that.
"She's right. That enough." I told them and Simon took a step back, although he looked very reluctant about it because it took him a good long time to step back. A second passed with Varin doing the same but his eyes were still trained on Simon.
They both huffed at each other before pivoting on their heels in the opposite direction.
"Wolves and their delicate egos." Layla scoffed and I couldn't agree more.
"Tell me about it. Sometimes I wonder if we are really the dominant species because anytime I see something like this happen, especially between Alphas, I'm suddenly reminded how caven man like it looks." I told Layla as we made our way to a buffet table and watched some couples shuffling on the dance floor.
"Cave man like?"
"Yep. What's left is for them to beat their chests and declare which female belongs to him." I told her and she let out a quiet chuckle.
"You're really funny you know? A much better conversationalist than Lykania that's for sure." She rambled, then her bright eyes went as big as saucers as she stared at me.
"I'm sorry, I should not have said that." She apologized and I threw her a soft smile.
"It's okay really, I get that a lot sometimes." I told her and watched as her shoulders sagged in relief.
We didn't talk much after that as someone asked Layla to dance leaving me all alone at the buffet table. But it's not bad at all as I take my time picking out appetizers and any desserts I can find.
Orion hadn't showed. Yet.
My Father said Orion would come earlier than others but it had been nearly a day since the guests had started arriving but still Orion was a no show.
My Father was a one prominent corner of the ballroom as people filled around him and I could see his smile was a little more than just appreciative. He relished in the attention.
Our of the corner of my eye, I could see Trent having a fairly good time with some maids and bigger ranking members of other packs who found him interesting. Key words being other packs because I didn't think my own pack was capable of seeing beyond a rank.
I think they often forget that it isn't a rank that makes a person but a person who makes the rank.
