A hundred percent sure that Trent was okay, I turned away from him and surveyed the rest of the packed up room.
Lykania was in a corner having conversation with some people I didn't recognize, and from the way her lips twisted into a grin, I knew she was bragging. There was no two ways about it.
My Father was in a far corner of the ballroom just like before, but this time he wasn't with my Mother. She was near the buffet tables on the other side with Anna, Alpha Vincent's mate and another woman I didn't recognize.
My Father didn't have a crowd around him like before, he just stood and chatted quietly with Alpha Vincent and Magnus and two other people. I hadn't gotten their names but I knew they were betas.
My Father's beta Raymond wasn't there though. In fact, it had been a while since I had laid eyes on the man. He seemed to be scarce these days.
For now reason at all, I found myself creeping closer to where my Father and his friends stood. And I prayed to the moon goddess I wouldn't get caught eavesdropping. That seemed to be a favorite pastime of mine.
"He simply stated he was busy and I didn't hear from him again. It was an informal note too." My Father scoffed, his face twisted into an unpleased expression.
"The best thinks he's really something since he's an Alpha." Alpha Vincent let out as he flicked a piece of his hair out of his eyes.
"He doesn't know his place, that is what it is." Alpha Magnus added, his face the mask of a scowl.
There were those words again, "his place". I did not understand werewolves obsession with putting people in their places. Surely those people knew exactly where they belonged.
"Is he still getting married to your daughter?" Alpha Vincent drawled at my Father. They were talking about Luciano. It made sense now.
"Of course he is, it's an opportunity too good to miss." My Father added with a twisted smile and I grimaced, then hid it by downing a mimosa.
I tried to remain hidden and made myself appear as though I was browsing through the buffet tables.
"The older one?" Alpha Magnus asked. They all went silent. My Father didn't like that question.
"Of course it will be the older one. She's easier." He stated and I stuffed my mouth with a pastry to keep it from falling open.
"And the younger one?" Magnus asked again.
"Too rebellious these days, I swear I don't know what has gotten into her. She's changed somehow and I don't know why. I don't like that I don't know." The irritation in his voice was so loud that my lips curled up.
Good. He hasn't quite figured me out. At least not yet.
"Maybe it's that mate of hers? Or Luciano?" Vincent suggested and my Father shook his head.
"No, it's something else, something more. I can't put my finger on it yet but I will find out. I even had her room searched in case I found anything worthwhile. But I came up with nothing."
The air rushed out of my lungs at my Father's words. He was the one behind the break into my room... I can't believe it.
I shoved another pastry into mouth and chewed hard. The pastry tasted like ash but I needed a distraction or people would see me gawking at nothing in particular with my mouth open.
I wanted to tune out the rest of their conversation but my curiosity got the better of me. My body still vibrated from the information I just heard but I toned it down as best as I could. I needed to know if he was behind anything else because as the days passed, I was beginning to find out that i never really knew him at all.
Was my Mother in on the breaking into my room? Was Lykania?
It seemed unlikely because someone like Lykania would have found a way to gloat about what happened but up till now, it was radio silence from her. I didn't even know if she knew about the break in or not.
"What if Luciano chooses her?" Magus asked them eyes my Father.
My Father took a deep breath. "I won't let that happen."
"Is it that easy?" Vincent drawled again and my father shrugged.
"I might let it happen if I'm able to put her in her place before it does or before she can mend her relationship with Orion." He stated and I didn't know why his words always seemed to amaze me.
I was a pawn in whatever game he was playing but I was too unpredictable to give away freely.
My skin still pricked about another person talking about where they thought my place was and I swall back the words I wanted to spit the same time I downed a second mimosa.
I needed to leave here, I had heard enough.
As subtly as I came, I shuffled farther away from them, and thankfully unnoticed because they were too deep in conversation to look around them.
"Eavesdropping are you?" Trent whispered next to me and I nearly jumped out of my skin at how close he was.
"What the hell? You scared me!" I whispered back and he smirked. Asshole.
"I came to check up on you. How are you enjoying the party?"
"It's good." I told him. Orion wasn't here and that was good enough for me.
"You sure?" Trent asked again, his eyes glued to whatever was happening on the other side of the ballroom.
It looked like they were doing the... Lingo?
"I'm sure. And you can go over there and do whatever it is they are doing." I stated and gestured towards the hollering group of people.
"Okay, be safe. And I will join them, you can too as well, it's not good to just be stuffing your face." Trent murmured and I shook my head.
"I am not playing the lingo."
"Lingo? It's called how low are you willing to go."
