"Whatever." I let out and shooed him away. He shot me one last smile before rushing off to go play "how low are you willing to go".
I watched him and the others play for a bit then nearly laughed my lungs out when Trent fell over backwards because the low he was willing to go was just too low for him.
I stopped laughing, wiping the tears out of the corners of my eyes as I turned away from them. The ball room was quite large with multiple stretching tables lining the walls and they were filled with any kind of delicacy a werewolf heart desired.
Most people were either dancing or playing games while the latter scavenged the buffet tables or just stood near it and admired it. I was among the latter, a mixture of both.
I spotted Simon, and he was among the latter as well but he wasn't scavenging the buffet table. He simply admired it with a soft smile on his face. Or was he using it as a means to not look crazy while he buried himself in his thoughts? Because on closer inspection, that is what it seemed like.
"Are you sure you're okay Simon? If you are feeling well, I can take you to the pack doctor and he'll -"
"Is it possible for mates to hide from one another?" He blurted out, his eyes widened at what he said and his cheeks went almost the same shade as his hair.
"Sorry, I didn't mean it like that, I was just curious." He rushed out again and made to walk away but I stopped him with a raised hand.
"I don't mind answering, and no, it's not possible." I stated simply.
He frowned at my statement and looked down at the marble floor.
"Oh, I just thought..." His words trailed off and he had that "not all there" kind of look on his face. He was thinking again.
"Have you met your mate?" I whispered softly then realized how foolish my question sounded. He had asked if mates could hide from one another which translated to he could feel his mate but he didn't know where she was.
"No, not yet. But soon." He said the last part under his breath but I heard all the same.
"They could mask their scent and make themselves harder to find but the connection is still there whether they liked it or not and their mate would eventually find them sooner or later." I offered to cheer him up a little.
It seemed to work but only slightly because he still looked down. I didn't want to push him any further in case he got uncomfortable from all my questions. We weren't that close so there was no need to. I turned to leave.
Wait, don't go. I haven't answered your question." He said, timidly. My eyes scrunched up and I looked at him.
"What do you mean? I didn't ask you anymore more questions." I told him.
"I know. I'm referring to the do- I- have- a- mate question. I want to tell you some more details, maybe you can help me." He said.
"Alright. Shoot."
He glanced sideways then looked past me.
"No one is going to here anything you have to say because they are busy enjoying the party." I told him then watched as his shoulders dropped.
"Okay. The thing is I can't find my mate. I can sense that she's here but her scent is so hard to keep track off." He lets out with a sigh, and I know he's hurting.
"She's not hiding from you, I think it's because there are all of people in the ballroom so you don't know who she is."
"But she's not in this room." Oh boy. So his mate was definitely not from a high rank.
"It's the same difference. The scents of the people here are wreaking. I think you need a bit of fresh air to smell properly." His eyes light up and he stared at me.
"Are you sure?" He asked with a growing smile on his face and it was funny how it was so similar to Trent.
"I'm sure." I said, feeling like I've repeated "I'm sure" one too many times today.
I didn't read every single book on mate bonds just for the fan of it. I still cringe at myself at how like some lovestruck teenager, I had gone to the library to find out everything about mates there was when I had found mine.
Then, it was like cupid had shot an arrow to my heart and it had pierced gone to the deepest parts of it because Orion didn't do any wrong in my eyes. Was that how he and Lykania were able to see each other? I had been blinded by love to see.
My sight had come back , and it had come back as a real eye opener because that day would be forever ingrained in my mind.
"I could help you look for her too." I offered and Simon shot me a smile.
"That would be great, more pairs of eyes would make finding her a lot easier." He added.
"Since she's in my pack, this might take a day or two because there are a lot, and I mean a lot of people to grow through." I warned him but his small smile didn't falter.
"That's fine." He muttered.
"And thank you, I don't know how but you've somehow lifted my spirits this evening." He remarked before shuffling over to another table and eating off of it this time instead of just admiring the dishes.
His back was straighter but he seemed more relaxed than I had seen him all night.
I busied myself with a few more helpings of the different varieties of frittatas as I surveyed the room again.
I didn't want to jinx it by saying everything was going well but the night had been fairly bearable and I only had the moon goddess to thank for that.
My Father's eyes had trailed to mine once or twice and I blinked back to let him know that I remembered about our deal. Going through the deal would be a different case entirely.
