My Father went back to talking to his friends and I made the executive decision to get out of his line of sight and as far away as possible.
The words he had exchanged with his friends still ran deep in my mind. I would never be able to look at him the same way again.
I had walked so far that I ended up in a remote part of the ballroom where not even the buffet tables reached.
Not bad but okay I guess.
To my left, I noticed a flash of black, o grey and I turned to find Varin leaning against a wall at an even farther corner. He hadn't noticed me yet and with the way his eyes were glazed over much like Simon's were, I knew he was deep in thought.
"Are you just going to keep staring at me?" His calm voice came through. He was looking at me now and my cheeks involuntarily reddened at being caught staring.
"Sorry?" I muttered and he raised a brow.
"Is that supposed to be an apology?"
"I guess." But the way I said it sounded more like a question than an answer. Varin sighed like he had had enough of me.
"Are you okay?" I said as I started to approach him.
"It's none of your business." He took his eyes away from me and resumed staring ahead.
Okay so he wasn't the peaches and cream personality Simon was.
"I'm just worried-"
"Worried? You don't even know me." He let out.
"I know enough. And no person who's okay would willinglh isolate themselves from a party." I told him.
"And for some reason, you're here as well. What does that say about you?" He questioned and I leveled a glare at him. He met it with a corner of his lips raised.
"Ugh, don't be a jerk, you not what I mean." I grumbled as I brought myself to settle against a wall beside him.
"I know." He whispered softly.
"Care to share what's on your mind?" I tried asking him again and went back to being quiet as I waited.
I waited. A minute passed, then two, then five. I tapped my foot lightly against the marble floor as the patience I had so carefully cultivated started to fade away.
"Theoretically, what do you do if you can't be with your mate?" I thought he wouldn't answer my question but surprise filled me as he spoke. He hadn't looked my way either. In fact, he looked like he hadn't said anything at all.
I didn't question his question if though I itched to.
"I guess you do what you've always done." I stated somewhat halfheartedly because I didn't know if that was advice I would take from myself.
And what was everyone's problem with talks about mates anyway? Was it mating season for werewolves and I somehow hadn't heard about it.
"And if I don't want to live without her?" Varin asked again and still I didn't ask what he meant and tried my best to answer his question.
"Then you don't. You find every possible way for her to not leave you." I told him and hoped that what I was saying was some sort of help for him.
"Have you found your mate?" I asked slowly. Very slowly because I wanted to appear less nosy qbut it looked like I was already done for with the way he was looking at me.
He opened his mouth to say something and his eyes flashed.
"Oh and don't say it's none of my business." I demanded, meeting his eyes full on as he looked about ready to throttle me.
His shoulders dropped and just behind the cool facade he always had on which was starting to make me feel some kind of way.
"So, have you?" I pressed instead of shyimg away as he glared at me.
"Well?" I drawled, my foot tapping starting up again.
"I have met my mate." He stated, then I waited for him to continue.
"... Is that it or...?" I tried to be friendly so I wouldn't piss him off.
Wow, he was the complete opposite of Simon. Simon had only taken a bit convincing before he had spilled what was boring into him on his own. Varin seemed to be a different case.
" I've met my mate but I can't be with her because of-"
"Your Father." I let out, interrupting him and he nodded.
"What's wrong with her?" I asked then bit my tongue when his nostrils suddenly flared. I should not have asked it like that.
"I should not have said that." I rushed out, his eyes leveled on me as I spoke.
"I know what you mean." He said and I clamped my mouth shut for him to continue.
"And to answer you, there's nothing wrong with her, it's her rank that's the problem." He said and my mind went numb immediately. Rank?
I took a breath. " Let me guess, she's an omega and your Father thinks she is too weak to stay by your side." I voiced. Varin's head snapped in my direction so fast that I thought he had whiplash.
"How do you know that?"
I shrugged like it was something as easy as general knowledge. "I've heard the words rank and omega one too many times this week and I don't like the way they are being associated with one another." I told him absentmindedly not really thinking it was going to make sense.
But it seemed it did with the way his jaw clenched, as if rememberimg something unpleasant.
"I've heard them a lot too and it is never said with good intentions." He said, his voice low.
His Father and mine were non- related twins because they were so alike. I wouldn't be surprised if his Father was as power obsessed as mine.
"What are you going to do about your mate?" I asked and he looked at me. For the first time, I could see nothing but pure emotions in his eyes instead of that state of calm that he seemed to have.
"Fight."
