Luciano. I sucked in a breath.
"What about him?" Varin was pushing my buttons now. I hadn't planned on pouring out my life story when I suggested we come here.
Varin cocked his head to the side.
"Are you really going to start playing dumb again?"
It was on the tip of my tongue to lash out at him but I held it. He couldn't possibly know what Luciano was to me.
"Why do you want to know?"
"Like I said before, I like knowing things." Of course. It was that simple.
"So you just hopped from Alpha Orion to Luciano huh?" He jibbed. Whether to get a reaction out of me, I didn't know. Something else had caught my attention.
Luciano. He had said Luciano with such fondness, he hadn't even attached the Alpha title like he did for Orion.
"You talk about him like you know him." I commented, not to achieve anything. I was just stating the obvious. But that obviousness soon turned to curiosity when Varin gave me a look that could only be perceived as, "why wouldn't I".
"You do know him?" I pressed, suddenly becoming more alert. I sat up straighter and stared, waiting.
"Of course I do. I know him quite well," he paused, a thoughtful expression passing across his face, "and something tells me I know him more than you do." I bit my tongue at that. He was right.
"Tell me about it." I rushed out eagerly and Varin tutted.
"Not so fast, I'm the one asking the questions."
And I'm not answering, I replied in my mind.
"If you know him so well, why didn't you ask him about us yourself?" The question went sour immediately I asked it. Us. Was there an us when it came to I and Luciano? Yes he was dear to me but I hadn't had much time with him at all. Not yet- I comforted myself with that- but soon.
"How about this, I answer your question and in exchange you answer one of mine." He suggested and I nodded - slowly.
"Your question better be reasonable." I warned and he gave me a sly grin.
"Of course."
"So, to answer your question, no I can't ask him about the both of you because he's hard to come by these days. He's an Alpha plus he has one of the biggest packs so he's always busy."
"When did you meet him?"
"Ah ah ah, I said one question." He rebuffed.
"Did you really?" I raised a brow and when his mouth fell open, just slightly, my lip curled into something that was supposed to be a smile. More like a grin really.
"Okay, you got me there. He's like an older brother to me. I've known him since I was really young and would visit all the time, but those visits are scarce now because we've grown up." Varin told me. It wasn't the answer I was looking to hear but give me any information about Luciano and I would practically foam at the mouth.
"Now it's your turn." I expelled a breath.
"Ask away."
"Are you planning on getting back with Alpha Orion?" Not what I was expecting, it was even better. I could answer that.
"Not a chance."
"It's as simple as that huh?"
"Yep." I replied, popping the "p".
"Figured."
Varin fell silent after that and he resumed looking up at the dark sheet of sky which was empty of stars. The moon was more than a crescent now, it was like a half circle, and it was the only object in the sky for miles and miles.
Goosebumps rose on my bare arms and I brushed my numb fingers against them. I expelled another breath- almost seeing it- and I noted that there was an ever present shiver down my spine. It was cold.
"Do you want to head back to the party? It's cold out here." Varin asked like he had read my mind.
"I'm heading back to my room." I stated then got up silently, stretching my stiff leg muscles.
"And I'll head back into the party then."
Without another word, he got up and followed me and when we got to the hallway leading to the ballroom, soft music still spilling from it through the walls, I turned to Varin.
"I'll see you tomorrow."
"Are you sure you don't want to change your mind?"
"No, I'm kind of tired." A lie, but not quite. I didn't want to see, Lykania, my Father or someone else who would back me into a corner.
It was already a mercy from the moon goddess that Orion hadn't shown up.
"Okay, tomorrow." He gave me a brief nod and continued down the semi lit hallway and I turned in another direction, then headed up the stairs.
Two hours later, I still lay awake in my bed. It was late into the night but I could still hear the soft him of music coming from the floor below.
"It's past twelve already, what are they still doing up." I grumbled, glancing at the clock, it's ticking sound the only noise in my room. With the ex of the hum coming from down stairs.
I dropped my head back on the pillow the same time there was a knock on my door, I stilled. Another knock.
I pushed my the covers and trudged out of my bed towards the door.
"Who is it?" My voice wasn't exactly loud but it was loud enough that the person on the other side should hear.
"It's Trent." His own voice, came through. Tired and... Slightly drunk?
I didn't dwell much on it and unlocked the door, cracking it open just enough to look at him. The side white glow from the hallway spilled into my much darker room like the beam of a flashlight.
"Trent? Crazy night?" I whispered and he shrugged. He didn't need to answer though because it was obvious enough. His floppy hair stood on end and he's cheeks were permanently flushed from whatever it is he had been drinking.
"Are you okay? Do you want to come in?" I asked even as my Father's authoritative voice sounded in my head, keep your distance from him.
