"Trent?" I shoved him out of whatever trance he was in and he harshly shook his head.
"Sorry, I just wanted to check on you." He answered.
I pulled the door wider for him to step through but he shook his head again and stepped back.
"No, there's no need for that. I'm heading back to my room, and I'll see you tomorrow, bright and early." He told me then winked before dragging his heels back the way he came.
I didn't realize I was smiling until I closed the door behind me. Trudging back to bed, I pulled the covers back and got in. Sleep came easier this time and I found myself lulled away to la la land.
Something was pounding away somewhere and I didn't know where. The pounding became more... It sounded almost impatient, maybe annoyed and I turned to my other side and muttered in my sleep.
"Wyn!" A voice called, so loud that I bolted upright and glanced at my poor door as it held miserably against its hinges. The pounding was coming from the door.
"Wyn!" Trent.
I smacked my the palm of my hand against my forehead and glanced at the clock. It was past eight. I didn't even know I could move that fast because several seconds later I was in front of my door and unlocking it.
"What the hell Wyn, what took you so long-" Trent's impatient voice was cut off abruptly when I slammed the bathroom door shut and went about my business.
Twenty minutes later, twenty, not the forty minutes I usually used to get ready, I walked out of the bathroom freshly showered and changed.
Trent was perched by my window and only turned around when he heard the bathroom door shut.
"Okay, let's go." I said, completely ignoring the "are you kidding me" stare he was throwing my way.
"Seriously?"
"Seriously." I said, for lack of a response at all and Trent face scrunched up before he shook his head and sighed.
"You're unbelievable."
I didn't say anything else and walked to the door, Trent on my heels as we silently made our way to the kitchen for breakfast.
We passed by a window, showing the sun was high in the clouds even though it was still quite early the morning.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked when Trent grasped my elbow and led em in another direction that wasn't the kitchen.
"The guest dining room." Guest dining room? My mind suddenly flashed and memories of the night before filtered through my mind one at a time. The dinner, the ballroom, Layla, talking to Simon, Varin, Orion not showing up. Everything hit me.
"But why?"
Trent stopped and glanced at me as if just noticing the confusion on my face.
"Wait, so you mean to tell me you didn't know?" He asked and I nodded.
"Your father requested it." Of course he did.
My father wouldn't want us to look like a dysfunctional family so saying we should all have meals together was a way of hiding that fact, at least I thought as much.
"Is everyone already in there?" I asked Trent as I shook myself free of his hold and walked by his side.
"Going by the time, I think most are already there." He said and I frowned.
Great. Another very grand, very late entrance to make. At least I had decided to wear one of my nicer dresses, I thought, then glanced down at the light material of the cashmere sweater dress I had thrown on at the last minute.
"But at least breakfast hasn't been served yet." Trent tried to cheer me up but that could only go so far. Just thinking about the fact I would have to pass all their scrutinizing faces was enough to make my pulse jump.
What if Orion had thought to surprise everyone and show up this morning?... My heart stopped and I paused in my tracks.
"Did anyone come this morning?"
"If you mean by Alpha Orion then no. There would have been an entourage if that were so." Trent said, putting me at ease. At least for now.
Unlike last night, I didn't bother to pause outside the door and pushed it open. All heads snapped to our- my direction as Trent had lingered outside talking to someone I hadn't seen.
Murmurs rose but it was far less compared to last night. Progress. I would take it. More than half of the room lost interest in me and went back to their own discussions and some didn't. In the form of Alpha Magnus and Vincent, my Father and Lykania included followed me with their eyes until I dropped into the only available seat. The one next to Lykania.
I guess there was a seating arrangement I wasn't aware of because everyone sat where they were the previous night.
"Late." Lykania said then humphed under her breath and I guessed it was to avoid angering our Father. Speaking of whom was staring a hole through my head.
I met his eyes, fleetingly and gave him an imperceptible nod which he answered with a soft curl of his lips. I swallowed the scowl that threatened to form on my face with a short swig of water.
Freaking psychopath, that was what he was. His words were still in my mind and I found it hard to look at him without showing how I truly felt. Disgusted because those nasty word had come out of his mouth. And ashamed because they had come out of my Father's mouth.
I angled my head away from him because I didn't even want to look at him and jumped from one after the other to the people I could see with this new angle.
Layla was to Lykania's right like before, completely taken in by her phone while Simon sat opposite me, thankfully looking better than before but still down. His eyes trailed to mine and I blinked hoping he would understand the silent question I was asking.
The room was engulfed in noise with no one paying any particular attention to us. He shook his head then glanced at the plate in front of him.
He hadn't found her yet.
