Varin sat next to his Father and was just out of the corner of my eye that I couldn't make out what he was doing without angling my body in the direction of my Father.
The dining room grew hushed and I knew why. The mouthwatering smell of breakfeast because it smelled like one wafted in the air and filtered through the near quiet room. As if on cue, the doors opened and numerous maids pushed in cart after cart of food that smelled heavenly.
Eggs, toast, pancakes, waffles, hashbrowns, sausages, every kind of breakfast food I could think of off the top of my head was placed on the table before us. Fruit platters and numerous beverages were placed on the table too, and the maids left as swiftly as they had set everything up, leaving us alone.
My Father gestured for us to begin and I lost myself in my meal, one of the few good things about my life in this pack house.
Just like that, an hour and a half flew by and people, mostly the guests from other packs milled out of the room to explore the pack house. At least that was what my Father said they could do.
Empty seats were here and there and I pushed against the table, my chair screeching a bit too loudly as I opted to leave my chair to join the array of empty ones.
But I was stopped- flanked by Lykania who grasped my arm which I shook away with an urgency as I remembered the last time that had happened. The spot on my arm where her claws has sunk in tingled from her aggressive touch.
"What do you want?" I spat. We were outside the dining room now. Its door closed behind us so no one could hear our bickering.
"Why would I want anything from you?" She drawled, her beady eyes roaming down my frame, and an expression i could only describe as utter disgust was etched on her face.
"On the contrary, it's you that wants to steal what's mine away from me." Her voice sounded like a hiss and I knew she was referring to Luciano.
I wanted to tell her that he was never hers to begin with but I wanted to enjoy the rare time she was civil- ish with me. I held my tongue.
"Is that what you wanted to tell me?" I asked already bored of her and she scoffed.
"Father asked to see you this evening."
"Why?"
"How should I know?" Lykania turned away from me like I was even there and walked off.
So much for founding out.
The door behind me opened again and I saw Trent walk out looking down the other end of the hallway before he turned sighting me and coming over.
"What's the matter?" I asked.
"How do you know if anything is wrong?"
"Your face. You're not really good at hiding what you think and since nothing terrible has happened, I know you want to ask me something." I told him and he blinked.
"Am I right?" He nodded slowly then smiled.
"Wow, impressive." He muttered and my lips stretched from pride.
"So...?"
"So, your Father gave me from now until after the party off and I was wondering if you'll be fine with me spending time with my sisters, I haven't really been looking after them properly." Trent said, his eyebrows furrowing in thought.
"I'll be fine." I said without thinking. I didn't want to be the reason he and his sisters didn't spend much time together.
"Are you sure, I mean, I could still stay with you if you wanted. It's no biggie."
"Trent, you know I could never do that to you."
"But-"
"I'm sure, now go." He stayed. He was still looking at me, torn between staying and going to his sisters. I guess he needed a little nudge.
"Trent, you better get out of my face and go be with your sisters before I drag you to see them yourself." I said, my voice firm and Trent's eyes widened. He still didn't move.
Rolling my eyes, I grasped his stiff elbow and pulled him along the hallway and he waddled behind me.
"Okay, okay, geez. Your treating me like a toddler."
"Well your acting like one." I retorted.
He gently shook free of my grasp and rolled his elbow a few times, and amused smile on my face.
"I can't believe you're kicking me out... Of the hallway." He drawled.
"Well better believe it. Now go." He moved this time. His hands raised in surrender before he walked down the hallway and our of sight. I didn't miss the relieved smile on his face as he passed me.
Well, I guess it was a big nudge or in this case pull he needed.
It was a lovely day out and it was only fitting to spend it in the garden. The garden was a thing for fairy tales at night but during the day, it was a little pocket of happiness tucked away from the harsh realities of the pack house.
The sun hit me head in and I winced at the sheer heat. The sun had been high but I didn't think it would be this hot. And it was only eleven in the morning. The days now stretched from being hot when it was bright out to much cooler evenings and finally nights that made me shiver in my sleep.
The garden was empty, save for a few gardeners at the far walls attending to plants that grew there. I had taken seat not on my usual bench but in the shade of another within the trees which canopied above me and blocked out ninety percent of the sun's harsh glare.
It was mostly grass and tall trees here and a few flowers here and there that had somehow found their way into the place.
It was quiet too, only the work of the gardeners filtering through accompanied with... Footsteps? And multiple of them from the sound of it.
I turned my neck in the direction of the cobblestone path.
"I knew I would find you here." Varin said breaching the open space in front of me.
Simon followed close behind. "Wyn."
