Simon stepped forward and stood beside Varin, their bodies like a wall that blocked the sunlight that came forward.
"How did you find me?"
"Pfft, like it was hard." Varin shot.
"We ran into your friend, I think Trent was his name and he said you might be here. And here you are." Simon answered with a soft smile that made him look boyish.
Then again, any boy that was just a bit younger than me looked boyish, at least to me.
Varin looked around the leafy foliage and whistled.
"This place is nice. How come you didn't bring me here last night?"
"I wanted to look at the stars." I said and he rolled his eyes.
"If my memory serves me right, there were none. Only an oddly shaped moon." He quipped and heat fizzled in my cheeks before settling again.
Simon took a seat beside me while Varin strolled forward to- as he had called it- "explore" leaving Simon and I alone.
"I didn't see you at the party after." I started and he nodded.
"Yeah, I went to bed twenty minutes later. I just wasn't feeling up to the festivities any longer. And I thought it would give me time to go exploring and possibly..."
"Find her?"
"But no such luck. The only thing I ran into were scullery rats. I gave up and went to bed straight after."
"We can search today." I said, offering sime kind of hope and he nodded. I didn't miss the way his eyes were slightly downcast with what I could only say was sadness. I bet he still thought she was hiding from him which I thought was ridiculous. She didn't even know him.
"But where do we start?"
"In the most crowded areas of the pack house, both inside and out. But first off, how many people know about this?"
His gaze drifted to an empty spot in the distance and he answered.
"Aside from you and me, oh, and Varin. This morning he had practically drawn every detail out of me."
"Yeah, he's like that." I stated, remembering my ordeal with him last night.
"That's it?" I asked.
"That's it."
"So your Father doesn't know about this?" I asked, astonished and watched Simon go very still. He sucked in a breath and didn't quit look at me when I stared back.
"No, I haven't told him anything." He replied, his voice tight.
Common sense told me not to push further with the way my question had affected him so I let him be. For now.
I studied Simon for a few moments, his jaw was set in a hard line and he looked so worried. I stretched my hand out to comfort him but snatched it back the last minute. We weren't close like that and I didn't want to impose.
"Are you two done moping around now or should we get moving?" Varin asked and I whipped my head around to look at him.
"Geez, I didn't even hear you coming." I said. He shot a sly grin then dipped his head and looked from me to Simon who had remained motionless.
"You okay?" He asked then took a seat between Simon and I.
"Have you ever thought that maybe you're mate isn't hiding from you and she's thinking the exact same thing you are right now." Varin's voice was measured as he spoke, he didn't sound angry or domineering but he seemed to get the point across because Simon perked up immediately.
"I hadn't thought of it like that." He said, his voice raw with emotions.
"I know. But before we go, what is so wrong about finding your mate? Because I know it's just not about the "what if she's hiding from me" nonsense you're spewing." Varin said, sounding very much irritated and I smacked a hand over my mouth.
"Varin I..." I trailed off, not knowing what to say.
"He knows what I'm talking about." Varin said, sounding every matter- of- fact. It seemed he was right too because Simon winced like he had been wounded physically but didn't deny what Varin had said.
"Simon?" I was curious now because I definitely didn't see any of this coming.
"I- well- what if she just doesn't like me?" His voice was a strange mix between a wobble and a whisper and it took me a minute to decipher what he had said.
Everything paused. It didn't even seem like Simon was breathing while Varin looked very much apalled.
"Are you serious? You must be serious with the way you look ready to break into tears." He rushed out incredulously and I shoved his arm lightly. He glared at me for a bit but at least he stopped talking.
"Why would you think that?" I whispered and Simon shrugged.
"Let's just say most people find me odd and it hasn't been that great for my social life. I'm often... On the receiving end of unpleasant circumstances," he said and I don't know why but I instantly felt that was another way for him to say he was bullied. " And if you've noticed, I don't really have real friends." He finished, his head bowed as if waiting for a jail sentence.
"Even as the Alpha's son and heir?" I asked, shocked.
"Even as that." He confirmed.
Varin who had been quiet all this while let out a sigh and said, " I wouldn't have said this out loud but I know you need to hear this. You're an amazing person, better than me even. Your kind nature has travelled from packs far and near and you have a lot of admirers in different packs if you don't know. She would be a fool if she rejected you." Varin exhaled audibly after his speech and Simon's eyes watered. Hell, mine did too and it wasn't even me he was talking about.
"Wow, I don't know what to say." Simon said softly, a smile gracing his face as he got over the emotional overflow.
"That was really kind of you Varin." I said and he winked.
"A "thank you" would be nice too." He told Simon.
"Thank you."
"You're welcome. But you owe me a hundred bucks."
"For what?" Simon frowned.
"For being an unbooked therapist."
