I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, and Simon seemed to be in the same situation as me.
"Varin you can't be serious." I let out as Simon raised his brows at him.
"And why not? I am not joking." He said, his face looking so serious that I found it even funnier.
"It's called helping Varin."
"Oh, we're stating random things now. And I don't work for free. There." He said then leaned back on the bench and crossed his arms over his chest.
"You know what, whatever." Simon said after giving up and Varin grinned like a wild hyena.
"Nah, I'm just joking." He said and started to laugh it off and I rolled my eyes the same time Simon did. He had already brought out a hundred dollar bill when Varin spoke.
"I'm not actually." Varin said the next second, his face loosing every trace of laughter than was there before. He snatched the money from Simon's motionless fingers and stuffed it into his pocket before giving it a light tap twice. All through, he had a soft smile on his face like a cat that was fed properly.
"You, are unbelievable." I muttered and he flashed a smile.
"What can I say, I'm me."
I stared at Varin for a millisecond and shook my head. I guess you couldn't really judge a book by its cover because the first time I had met Varin, my initial impression of him was someone who was cold and distant. Hell, I thought he was a Vincent the second because they looked so alike that it scared me sometimes.
But the Varin I had gotten to know was something else. He was fifty shades of characters because he always found a way to surprise me. And he still scared me with his observaihe was because I don't think I would have picked up on Simon feeling inferior about himself.
"... Wyn?" Varin waved a finger in front of my face and I blinked.
"Huh? What?"
"I don't mean to alarm you but we have a mate to find." He said slowly and I just then realized they were both staring at intently.
"Oh, right." I said, my voice cracking from embarrassment that I almost facepalmed. I got up even as my face burned and I dusted the non- existent lint off my dress as the guys stood then stretched.
They stopped again and both stared at me as if waiting.
"What?" I snapped and Simon's brows rose. Varin only rolled his eyes before speaking again.
"If someone remembers, they promised to take us to the the most crowded places of the pack to find his mate." Varin said, irritation flaring in his voice and my eyes widened.
"Oh, I-"
"Forgot?" Varin asked with a sly grin and I recalled why I wanted to smack him in the head sometimes.
"How did you even know I said that anyway? You weren't there." I asked, simple curiosity taking over my game.
"I was in the garden too you know, and I'm not deaf." He stated like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"Okay let's head inside." I said after a moment of awkward silence. Simon didn't bother getting in between Varin and I and stood off to the side while we bickered.
"Where to?" Simon asked when we crossed the pack house threshold. We were almost instantly welcomed with the chorus of voices all around. The place was buzzing more than usual but I knew it had everything to do with our guests. And it would be that way for the next week or so.
"The kitchen." I stated only for both of their heads to snap in my direction. And to top it off, they stared at me like I suddenly turned blue.
"The kitchen?" Varin blinked as he asked.
"You heard me right the first time."
"Are you sure? I thought we could head to maybe a common room of sorts but the kitchen doesn't sound..." Simon's voice faltered to a stop and he looked so unsure.
"I am."
"And what are we supposed to find there huh? It's mid day, it would probably be empty and-" I cut Varin off.
"My pack, my rules. And out of the three of us, I know how these things work." I said as I side eyed him.
"And what do you mean by that?"
"When was the last time you interacted with a member of staff in your pack." I scoffed then watched his face drain of color. He resumed looking ahead but this time his face was stone as he did.
Simon was smart enough to keep a good distance from him because Varin looked like he would summon thunder from the sky.
I lead them down the twisting corridors, and we encountered a few maids in the process but Simon had pointed out that it wasn't any of them. They had started heading towards the direction of the great dining hall but when they saw me take a right they turned on their heels so fast that I was sure their shoes had left scour marks.
It didn't take long before they squeezed their face in annoyance at the noise coming from the kitchen and the doors were still closed.
"You sure this is the kitchen?" Varin asked as he stared hard at the doors.
"See for yourself." I muttered then pushed the door open a fraction and peeked through to see what was happening. It was the same old atmosphere with maids gossiping, cooking and cleaning. Satisfied, I pushed the door wider so they could peer in as well before pushing it all the way.
"Simon, you're up." I said and he walked in front of us- though timidly - to get a better look.
He moved in further, he forehead knitting in concentration as he took in the room. Varin had come to stand beside me as we waited for the miracle of a mate to unfold.
"You think she's going to be here?" Varin whispered in my ear as we watched Simon walk stiffly around the room.
"I honestly have no idea."
