"I don't care who started what. What I do know is that we are going to head inside and give the two love birds some space." That's if they are even here, I thought.
Trent muttered something while Varin flashed a triumphant smile.
"You're taking his side?" He voiced, his words almost sounding accusing.
"Trent, don't even say that. I'm not taking anyone's side, I'm only choosing to do the most logical thing which is leaving mates. Alone." I gritted out to last words then strolled forward and held his arm in a vice like grip. He could probably shove me off if he wanted but it made me feel better than meeting him run loose.
"Let's go, oh and go get Daisy." I told him releasing him just long enough so that he could grab her.
"Is he always like that?" Varin asked from where he stood, his gaze trained on Trent who had crouched down to talk to Daisy.
"No, he's only like that because you're being an asshole." I shot his way and mouth dropped.
"What... Me! He's the one acting like some caveman all in the name of protecting his sister." Varin fired back, his voice was just above a whisper and out of ear shot of Trent and Daisy. He moved till he was just a step away from me and looked at me expectantly.
He was in for a surprise because I knew I wasn't going to say what he wanted to hear.
"The key words being protecting his sister. It's instinct Varin, taking care of his sisters is all he has known for years and he is not about to change just because some male waltzed in and was his sister's mate." I explained and his brows shot up.
"I..."
"Just try to see things from his side." I begged and after a not so necessary pause, he sighed. Deep. As if I was the one causing him problems.
"Fine."
"And while you are at it, stop doing a douche bag will you?"
"I'm going to pretend like I didn't hear you ask that." He said without looking at me.
"Okay, we're ready now." Trent said, Daisy in tow with her hand in his.
"Is Willow coming with us?" Daisy asked, whipping her head around to find her.
"No she isn't but you will see her soon." Trent answered as he pulled Daisy forward, and I noticed him subtly tighten his grip on her hand. He noticed me looking and I shrugged. I didn't blame him because Daisy had a tendency to... Bolt. And she diiit at the worst times possible. It would be a disaster if she ran in Willow and Simon doing... Other activities.
"But she's always with me." Daisy whined then started twisting her wrist in Trent's hold.
"I know. But she's busy today."
"Promise she'll come later?"
"I promise."
Daisy fell quiet after that and started letting Trent lead her forward. Then she stopped in her tracks again.
"Wait! Pinky promise?" Varin rolled his eyes and I didn't know when my lips started tugging into a smile at their exchange. Trent however looked as serious as ever and stretched his other hand out, his pinky fingers extended.
"Pinky promise."
With that, Daisy went quiet and seemed content but even I knew they wouldn't last long. I was well aware of how bad her tantrums could be if she didn't get something she wanted. The something being Willow coming back later. And that was highly unlikely but I couldn't say I was surprised that Trent made a promise he couldn't keep even if he tried. Everything was up to Willow, and by extension, Simon.
The walk back to the pack house was calm, serene even. We hadn't run into anyone and I took the time to admire the rapidly changing sky which was going from a bluish purple to an orange. The sound of rabbits and squirrels came from the distance and the trimmed bushes surrounding us ruffled here and there as the animals ran through them.
"This garden is really beautiful at all times of the day." Varin mumbled, quite literally reading my mind. His eyes were trained on a particular bush in the shape of a wolf and his lips curved up. "And night." He added after a second.
"It is." I agreed.
Trent and Daisy were a few steps ahead of us and from what I could see, it looked like Daisy was playing hopscotch along the way.
"It sort of makes me wish we had something like this in my own pack."
"You don't?"
"We do have a garden if that's what your surprised about but not anything like this. Ours pales painfully in comparison."
"Huh, what's it like?"
"Just the regular schmegular stuff, nothing too spectacular." He said then whipped out his phone and showed me some pictures.
"That's..."
"Sad, I know. My Father isn't really big on plants." He stated. Neither was mine really. All these were what was left of my grandparents work and it was too big for my Father to destroy it. He probably would have turned it into a training ground by now if he could.
"So, who's behind the garden's existence?"
"My-"
"And please don't say your Father because we both know that's not true. My Father and yours are basically the same person when it comes to pack matters."
"I was going to say my Grandmother, geez." I let out. "And finally, I'm so glad that someone recognizes how identical our Fathers are."
"Who doesn't?"
"A lot of people, you would be surprised."
"Hey I'm going to take Daisy to meet one of the older shewolves and I'll meet you in your room." Trent called ahead of us and I paused. My room... Oh right. We were still having these bullshit dinners together.
"Sure thing." I yelled back.
We were already at the pack house entrance which meant we were going separate ways.
"I'll see you for dinner right?"
"Of course I'll be there." I stated. It wasn't like I had a choice, not when my Father was concerned.
"I'll see you then." With those parting words Varin went in the direction of the guest bedrooms while Trent went in the direction of the common room.
Upstairs it was.
