I swallowed.
"I won't." The lie tasted bitter on my lips and I discretely smacked my lips together.
"Hmm."
I still stood plainly and waited. My Father hadn't mentioned the fact that I was late and I didn't know if that was a bad thing.
"To the dinner then." He said then gestured for me to leave. I guess that answered my question. But then again he looked more approachable than usual so maybe that was the reason he was so lenient. If it were a week ago things would have been very different.
"Right." I turned away from him and headed out the door and made sure to add a little speed to my steps because I would be damned if I walked side by side with my Father.
The walk to the dining room was a breeze and with the noise coming from behind the closed doors, I knew I was late. Again. But at least this time my Father was behind me.
I immediately sighted Trent when I entered and his head perked up when he saw me. I glanced at him for a moment and caught his eyes before carrying on to my seat, to spend another hour and a half in Lykania's presence- and for whatever reason, her face was a mask of stone but i wasn't going to bother asking her what happened.
Layla smiled at me from over Lykania's shoulder and I was surprised I could still function and return a smile back. Especially since the sense of urgency had remained in my chest after my Father passed on the news.
Orion would be here tomorrow. Orion. Would. Be. Here. Tomorrow. And I didn't find out until today. Did Lykania know? Had my told her or had he informed her himself? At the thought of that, my mood soured and I wouldn't be surprised if I had a matching face of stone with Lykania.
"Would you stop shoving me?" I gritted out for the third time. I don't know why Lykania suddenly decided that her arm room wasn't enough because she had quite literally been jabbing me in he ribs since we started eating.
"Fuck off." She breathed and my brows went up. Her horrible behavior didn't usually surprise me but this one did by a long shot. She looked like she had been on edge ever since I entered and still didn't know why that was.
"He'll get mad if he sees you throwing your fucking tantrum, just so you know." I commented an I knew she was aware of who I was talking about.
Our Father had been casting all sorts of glances our way, discretely of course because he didn't want anyone to notice.
"I don't care." She let out and her tone surprised me even more. Since when did "daddy's perfect princess" stop caring about what he thought? Or was she just in a mood like always? She had been fine this morning and her mood only changed after the talk at the office... Wait.
Our Father had sent her out and she had looked shocked. Our Mother wasn't there to support her as always so it wasn't that easy to convince him to let her stay. If he wanted to let her stay.
Our Father was keeping secrets from everyone including herself and maybe she just now started realizing that she didn't hold all the cards like she thought.
"Oh, so it's because of what happened at the office that's got you worked up huh?" I asked to test my theory. And in response she delivered a sharp jab to my ribs. The pain was just a flash but what lingered was the triumphant smile on my face.
Bingo. So that is her problem.
I turned away from her and as subtle as I could, scooted my chair away from her. And do the first maybe second time since the guests arrived, I wa thankful for the multiple voices chattering because no one heard me move my chair. And more importantly Lykania and I's "conversation". If it could even be called that.
My eyes met Varin's from across the room and he winked when he noticed me staring back. I glanced at the empty spot across from me that Simon had been in. In all honesty, I wa even surprised he could stay away from Willow after such a short while. But it was obvious he wasn't all there because he had been fidgeting in his seat which was quickly noticed by Alpha Thomas.
He had murmured the excuse of the centurybecoe rushing out of the room. And from the fire in his steps, I know I probably wouldn't be seeing him till late afternoon the next day if they decided to do what newly mates couples do.
"I'm going to my room because I'm exhausted." I told Trent and Varin almost an hour later after the dinner had ended. There was still a little tension... Scratch that, a lot of tension between them but they had been acting civilized with one another. I could take that.
"Are you sure you don't want to stay and have drinks?" Varin asked as he wiggled his eyebrows.
"I'm sure. But if you both want to have a drink so bad, then you can go together." I suggested even though I knew the answer would be a hard no.
Trent's face scrunched up in disgust while Varin looked like I had said the most outrageous thing ever. They looked at each other, shuddered then looked back at me.
"No thanks." Trent muttered.
"I'll pass." Varin agreed.
"I guess we're calling it a night." Trent said to break the silence and I nodded.
"I'll walk you to your room." He offered.
"You don't have to you know."
"But I do. I'm technically supposed to." He kept his words vague as his eyes darted to Varin.
"I'm leaving so you don't have to do the secret eye thing." Varin stated as he kicked off of the wall he was leaning on.
"Okay, see you tomorrow." I called after him since he had already started walking. He didn't turn around but raised his hand and gave something that looked like a wave.
"Does he know about..." Trent drawled.
"No he doesn't." At least I didn't think so. But with Varin, I was sure he would figure it out sooner or later.
