"Huh, I would have thought he would know about everything." Trent commented and I shook my head. No one besides Trent, my father, myself and a select few knew exactly what was going on. I didn't even feel comfortable enough telling Varin about the tiniest thing, even though that thing would have been temporary.
"He doesn't." But he suspects, I wanted to add that but I didn't want to alarm Trent too much. Hell, he definitely knew, not even suspected that something was going on.
"So, what are you going to do?" The question slipped from Trent's mouth rather abruptly and it took me a while to just sit and think about it. I grabbed Trent by his elbow, turned him around and led him towards my room because we were starting to garner attention the more we stood aside talking while doing nothing else.
It was almost like a switch- a switch being my Father's harsh words ringing in my ear about staying away from Trent. Well, I successfully failed that.
I glanced behind us at the few people who still lingered around and hoped that none of them would run off and go tell my Father what they had seen.
We were a good distance away and I made sure there was no one around before I turned back to Trent to hear what he wanted to say.
"So, you were saying," I drawled when our eyes met.
"So, what are you going to do?" He looked at me expectantly and I suddenly felt like I had been placed in a spot.
"I'm... Not going to do anything." I said and I didn't know why I felt like a douche bag just saying that out loud. It's not as if I was lying about who I was. But even at that, a morsel of guilt still crept into my heart.
"Seriously?"
"Seriously." I let out, the word bitter in my throat. I had to remind myself that Varin hadn't asked me anything yet and he was smart to put two and two together. If he really wanted to know, then he would ask the right questions, I told myself.
Trent didn't say anything else and just looked ahead in the hallway until the awkward silence quite literally started choking us. I couldn't bear it.
"Have you seen Willow?" I asked the first thing that came to my mind that I knew would trigger some kind of emotion in him. What I didn't bet in is it triggering all his emotions.
"No, but she's fine." My eyes widened at his words. I had thought he would have been able to talk to her since Simon had showed up, even though his showing up had been brief.
"Oh, really? But she's fine isn't she?" I said again and watched Trent's lips twist into a disgusted expression.
"She's fine thankfully, Simon told me so." Trent murmured.
"Oh, that's good. And, it's Simon now?" I asked with a small smile. Only a few hours ago, Trent was willing to fight someone who out matched him in a fight all in the name of Simon being his sister's mate.
"Yep. And before you say anything, it was Simon who suggested it. He said something about us being brothers- in- law and he didn't want to get between the relationship we could form." Trent finished and I felt my heart him in response.
"That's really great." I told Trent and he nodded. His mood didn't say much but I did know that what Simon had done meant a lot to him. He and his siblings had been mistreated by higher ranked wolves their whole life and seeing one who made an effort to get to know you and still treated you as an equal was really something to him.
"Yeah." He whispered, his twisted lips still very much the way it was as he answered.
"And why do you keep making that face, was something wrong with Simon?" I asked, my interest piqued.
"Nothing was. Other than the fact that he smelled like Willow, nothing." He gritted out, his eyes wider than usual as he answered.
"I'm still not following. They are mates aren't they? Of course he would smell like her and she like him." I clarified but Trent still maintained his position.
"I thought about that too but changed my mind because Simon really, really smelled like Willow. Have I mentioned really?" Trent dragged out. His eyes lost focus and he looked like he was remembering something and I agreed more when I saw he shiver from whatever the memory was.
"It can't be that bad." I said in Simon's defence but Trent only looked at me like I had suddenly turned purple.
"It was. When I say very, I mean very very." Trent drawled the "very" out like as if he was talking to a one year old toddler. I felt my cheeks heat up at what Trent had pointed out and I shrugged, and it looked like the most awkward movement on earth.
"They are newly mated so it's only probable." I told him as he silently fumed beside me.
"She's my baby sister!" Trent let out, frustration evident in the way he shoved his hands into his pockets.
"And she's also grown up enough to make her own decisions, especially now that she has a mate." I told him firmly and he nodded before wracking unsure fingers through his already messed up hair.
"I know all those. It's just that it's hard to suddenly stop being over protective of her. I've been looking after her and Daisy since our parents died and to suddenly shut that off overnight has been the hardest thing for me to do. I'm really trying you know." Trent let out, emotion reeking from each syllable of his voice.
I pulled him into a light hug since no one could see us and just held him. A minute or two passed before I released him and stared at his eyes.
"I know you love Willow but you can't keep her protected forever. Talk to her if you see her tomorrow, I'm sure you'll feel so much better." I suggested.
