Trent looked ready to draw his hair out as he stared at the happy couple from across the room.
"Willow's here too?" I couldn't see her well enough because of the milling people but from where I stood, she looked relaxed in her role.
"Yep. It's not really a secret now that they are mates and Simon's Father had not seen any reason to hide them."
Trent's words had me glancing back at the happy couple and I watched the way Willow hooped her arm through his while Simon stood slightly to the front of her in a protective stance. I didn't know when I started smiling at the interaction, that's what a mate should be like.
It was like I was leading myself to a tight spot because my chest tightened as I thought of the concept of mates. I didn't want my failed mate relationship to get to me, but time and time again, I would find myself thinking about all the what ifs and feeling sad about it even though I wasn't the one to cause anything to end.
I hated to admit that there were times where I was convinced it had to have been my fault somehow. Maybe if I had just been a better mate, Orion wouldn't have cheated on me. Thoughts like these random through my head like a thread that wouldn't end until I realized that nothing I could have done would change the outcome of that relationship.
I would have ended up dead on the garden floor with no one caring about me. Nothing would change. Orion was a jerk and a cheat and it couldn't be my fault. It was a bitter pill to swallow.
I swallowed the pain lodged in my throat and dragged my pained gaze away from the happy couple. I offered a silent prayer to the moon goddess when I noticed that Trent had gone on his phone and hadn't noticed anything. The Moon goddess knows I wasn't ready for anything.
Breakfast was running late today for some reason much to my Father's annoyance. He had an ever present vein ticking on his throat as he stared murderously at the workers running around. I didn't blame them though because the decorations at the rest of the pack house were something else and I knew something had to be sacrificed to finished the decorations on time. And that thing happened to be our breakfast.
I didn't mind either because it gavee time to mingle around and find out news about things.
Out of the corner of my eye, Simon strolled over to his Father who was very much in my line of sight and I turned to look at Willow who stood at the sidelines, staring at her mate with literal stars in her eyes, already hopelessly in love.
Without thinking, I went up to her. Her eyes met mine and a corner of her mouth lifted into a shy smile.
"You looked good." I told her and her smile widened.
"Thank you." She whispered softly. I wanted to tease her when my eyes locked in something on her neck... A mark!
"Is that a mark on your neck?" I asked like it wasn't clearly visible. But I did smile when Willow turned a nice shade of red and with shaky hands, she brought her fingers to the side of her neck- the side where the mark was- and rubbed on it awkwardly. That mark was a clear indication that they had been busy the last night.
"Don't cover your mark up, it's beautiful." I told her when she started turning up the collar of her shirts.
We were still in the topic of Mark's when Simon slinked back over, a broad megawatt smile on his face. When he had first arrived at the pack, there had been this air of gloom surrounding him before he told me about his mate situation. And now, he looked like a whole new person, he was happier.
The best way to describe Simon was like a rising sun. He looked more vibrant, more alive than before and it was all thanks to the brown- eyed beauty making googly eyes at him. It was when he started reciprocating that I knew I was third wheeling hard and that I needed to leave the two of them alone.
"Their at it again huh?" He mumbled, without looking up from his phone.
"Tell me about it. Especially Willow." I murmured and Trent nodded.
"Especially her." He confirmed... Then sighed.
"But she's happy and that is the most important thing of all." I wanted to reach out and hug him but not in front of the crowd. I didn't want any drama of any kind with me at the centre of it.
I had to settle with gently stroking his arm and making sure it didn't look like anything. Trent leaned into the touch and we stayed like that in comfortable silence... Until it was broken by my Father's voice.
"Can we finally go in now?" He drawled and even someone who was an idiot could tell that he was pissed. He's loud confrontation cut a lot of conversations short and with eyes, fire in their depths, he eyes a few line maids who ushered us into the now finished set of the dining hall.
This time around, there were small changes made to the seating arrangement to accommodate a few new people. My mood soured immediately I noticed mine hadn't changed and Lykania would still be right next to me.
But I did perk up at what she was wearing. She had on long, long sleeves. The kind of long sleeves you put on when it's the dead of winter when the wind is whipping and howling, not when it is a warm ssummer day with no chance of rain. I glanced at her wrists, satisfaction seeping in even though I hadn't seen anything. The sleeves of her top his everything.
"Love the long sleeves." I commented as I plopped down next to Lykania. I had thought she hadn't heard but she only stiffened in her seat before muttering what I didn't know- probably xurses- as we waited to be served.
"And I would love to bash your head in." She whispered threateningly.
