If it was possible to choke on air, I did. Or was it the chicken I had been chewing on that suddenly started tearing like ash in my mouth.
"... What?"
I just hoped it was my brain malfunctioning because "looking forward to" and "Orion" were two things that I hadn't put together in a long time. And it wasn't going to change anytime soon.
"I asked if you are looking forward to seeing him. Seeing your mate after a while can be quite the reunion." He's not my mate, I wanted to snap- not anymore- as I turned to Alpha Vincent. His eyes bored into mine and I had trouble meeting his gaze head on- not that he would like me to since he was just like my Father. It was like an abomination if you looked them in the eye for too long.
"Well?" He pressed, his voice so like Varin's. Even his facial features were a mature version of Varin's, and it made me uncomfortable with how close Varin and I had gotten.
I took a quick glance around the table, and more than a few pairs of eyes were looking in with interest and I swallowed. It was like being a pet trapped in a cage from everyone to view.
But it wasn't the growing interest that had me talking, it was my Father's.
"Um, sorry, I got a little shocked since no one has asked me this question yet. It has been a while and I'm sure it will be something. I just hope to not make a scene." I lied, then forced a blush to seal the effect.
Alpha Vincent smiled at me and nodded slightly along with my Father and Alpha Magnus. Those small moves alone threw my stomach for a loop and I swallowed hard to keep myself from throwing up. They disgusted me.
"That's good to hear." My Father commented absentmindedly.
The others started losing interest in me one by one, and I mentally scolded all of them to mind their own business like as if I wouldn't do the same thing to someone else who was in a similar situation.
The weight on my form lifted gradually as the stares retracted and I could finally eat my meal in the closest thing to peace.
From beside me, Lykania's lips had curved at my predicament and I pointedly ignored her. I knew she had enjoyed watching me struggle for words with Alpha Vincent.
I kept my head low after that because I was not prepared for all those spring up questions that would definitely cut me off guard.
I still had to appear like I was following what my Father had ordered.
"What was that back there?" Varin asked an hour and a half after breakfast had ended. He, Trent and I had come to the spot that had quickly turned to our spot in the garden. Willow and Simon had slinked off somewhere an hour earlier and I had said they had probably gone off to do lately stuff.
Varin had laughed at my comment but Trent could had found watching paint dry more amusing.
"An ambush." I deadpanned.
"For both of them?"
"For both."
Nothing was going to convince me that my situation as well as Willow and Simon's were anything but planned, especially in my case. I wouldn't be surprised if my Father and his other Alpha buddies had discussed all these before hand. They were most certainly capable of it, I thought, reminiscing of that night when I overheard them.
"I know my Father is straight crap but geez, from what I'm hearing about yours, he takes the cake." Varin rose from his seat on the bench, hands shoved into his pockets as he looked at the sky.
"It's really messed up." He let out, then expelled a breath.
"It is," I agreed.
"No comment?" I turned to Trent, he had a faraway look in his eyes and he shrugged when he saw me looking at him.
"What can I say? I want to say that I'm surprised by everything but I've seen too much for that to be true. It is what it is." With his eyes closed and his face tilted up, he sounded defeated, and I didn't like that. With a bit of hesitance, I placed a hand on his and his previously closed eyes opened to stare at our conjoined hands.
I didn't know what I was comforting him for, but I knew I just needed to.
He squeezed his hand around mine in silent acknowledgement and we remained like that until Varin came to join us on the bench again. He didn't remark on our hands but his eyes did pass over them fleetingly.
"Is anyone going to tell me what's really going on?" Varin asked no one in particular. The silence drew out and only the gentle rustle of bushes broke it.
Varin looked over Trent then stared at me pointedly, waiting.
"I don't follow?"
"Don't do this again, I know there's something that I don't know and you aren't offering to tell me either so I have to ask." He ran his fingers through his neatly combed hair then drew his eyes back to mine, they were raw with emotions as he stared at me. He could very well be staring into my soul with how intense his look was.
"I have so many questions, like why do you need a bodyguard," he glanced at Trent as he said this, and Trent stiffened under the heavy gaze, "if he is even a bodyguard at all," he added again as his eyes narrowed.
He shot up from his seat again and paced a path in front of Trent and me.
"Why is it your family seems so close but when it comes to you there's an exception."
"Seems" being the key words but I let him ramble on.
"What is really going on in this pack? I know we've talked about this before but I can't help feeling like you left a lot of things out."
He was right. I did.
