"Don't look so pessimistic," Varin chided after he went over the bare skeletons of what was supposed to be a plan and I swallowed.
"I'm not, I'm just nervous," I defended.
"And I'm worried." Trent put in for no reason at all which got my nerves wracking.
Varin sent a ferocious glare his way and Trent not so discretely shifted in his seat.
"Don't scare her, geez." Varin blew out a breath and rolled his eyes. He rose from his seat and stumped over to the edge of the bushes, and he looked to be admiring the roses.
"My mate's favorite flowers are roses," he said, clearly lost in thought before plucking the reddest one and holding it against his nose. His closed his eyes, and his lips stretched.
"What's with him?" Trent whispered and I smiled.
"There's no greater joy than finding the smallest things that remind you of your mate," I told him, even if my words did sound cryptic. My heart twisted when memories of... No, he wasn't my mate any longer. But the memories flashed through my mind none the less.
I inhaled and gradually, the memories subsided to be replaced by ones that evoked stronger emotions within me, and...
"... Wyn?"
"... Huh, sorry, what did you say?" I voiced, a bit disoriented.
"... I was saying how you got the same look in your eyes as Varin over there?" He asked.
"Oh, um, mate stuff." I rushed out and hoped he wouldn't press it. He gave me a strange look and I kept my face as stoic as I could and hoped he couldn't read anything from it.
"Okay..." He wanted to say something else and I held my breath for a question I wasn't ready to answer but the next moment Varin came into view and blocked the sunlight that had been streaming down on Trent and me.
"Sorry,I got a little carried away." He gave an apologetic smile then released the rose he had held tightly in his grip. The squashed flower fluttered lightly to the ground, a few of its petals already flowing freely in the breeze.
Varin checked his watch, then sighed. "We have to go, it's getting late and the main event is starting quite early."
With a frown, I checked my phone and my eyes flashed at the screen. So we had been sitting here for over three hours? Come to think of it, my butt was numb and there was a tingly sensation travelling up my legs for lack of use.
I got up and a grain left my lips at my muscles tensing and my bones cracking.
" Whew, granny." Varin whistled, and I shoved him in the stomach.
Trent got up after me and stretched his hands before looking in the direction of the path we were supposed to take.
"Let's head inside." There wasn't any argument as Trent took the lead while Varin walked loosely beside me, sometimes behind me because he looked lost in his head and would lag behind.
"I'll head to my room and start getting prepared."
"I'll come with you," Trent and Varin offered without missing a beat, then they glanced at each other.
"Absolutely not, I'll be fine."
"And Lykania?" Trent asked.
"She won't be stupid enough to try and attack me a second night in a row unless she wants to get caught," I reassured.
"She didn't get what she wanted last night and that's not going to change this night either."
Trent looked conflicted on what to do and his eyes kept darting around. Varin however, his gaze was fixed on the floor as he pondered on something. Then he looked up, his eyes locked on my face.
"You'll sure you'll be fine?" He asked and I nodded because I would snap if I had to tell them one more time that I was fine. That was one of the questions I dreaded these days.
"That settles it," he said, then clasped a hand firmly on Trent's shoulder, " let's go to our own room and get ready." Varin said again.
"But-"
"No buts. She's not a little girl who can't take care of herself but a full grown woman. Cut her some slack that she can look after herself and isn't proud to ask for help when needed." Varin stood up for me, and I felt a warm, fuzzy feeling take root and grow in my chest.
Trent rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, his cheeks tinted pink as he avoided eye contact.
"Right sorry, I'm-"
"Just worried, I know." I offered him a smile which he returned with a nervous one of his own.
"We'll see you later then."
Trent could not have hidden his disappointment if he tried.
"You both can escort me to my door, you know." I hinted, then hoped Trent would feel less worried.
He smiled and Varin seemed more relaxed as they took me up on my offer and walked me to my door.
"We'll see you later okay, stay safe." Trent said a moment before he and Varin headed back down the hallway. Varin had simply given me a small nod, then tipped his imaginary hat before following behind Trent.
An hour later, the chattering from the pack had reached its maximum because that was all I heard, even behind the comforting walls of my bedroom.
It was late now, the orange sky since gone dark and was replaced with a beautiful indigo sheet. Stars sprinkled across the sheet and a half moon- come to think of it, there hadn't been a full moon in weeks- adorned the sky to complete the night.
I left the familiar room and traveled down the hallways, and whoever I passed didn't miss the chance to stop and gawk at me, and i fist bumped myself mentally for choosing a bomb of a dress.
Trent and Varin told me they would wait for me at the doors, and I picked up the full skirt of my dress to increase my pace, I was already late.
I was a few feet from the door, and I could see them both, in full fledged suits. Varin glanced at his watch as usual before dragging his slightly annoyed gaze to mine, then froze.
Trent looked at him then followed his line of sight before freezing too.
"... Wow"
