"I asked you both a question," he said again when the silence dragged on.
His words hung limply in the air and Lykania looked over to me, her eyes pleading for help.
If our Father hadn't been standing in front of us, nothing would have stopped me from back handing her because it was her stupid fault we were in this situation in the first place. If she had kept to herself and tried to be peaceful for one night, then I wouldn't be in this predicament and would be enjoying some of pigs in a blanket laid out on the buffet tables.
"Lunawyn, why don't you answer instead," he said, as he turned to me, clearly realizing that Lykania wouldn't say anything because a cat had apparently gotten her tongue.
I inhaled. If he wanted an answer, then he was going to get a bloody answer from me.
"If you must know, your perfect daughter over here finds it necessary to try and harass me any time she gets the chance," I stated, my chin lifted, and Lykania glanced at me, her mouth already dropped open as she tried not to glare at me.
"That's not true, don't believe her! She's lying." She turned to our Father, already switching to her "I can never do wrong" face and I scoffed. What a joke.
"I'm lying! Do you want me to tell him about your little visit-"
"Shut up!" She screeched. Her eyes were throwing daggers at me, as she screeched, much quieter this time, "you freaking bitch."
"Right back at you, sis."
"That's enough! From both of you. Do you realize who your standing in front of?"
"It wasn't my fault, she's the one who-"
"Enough Lykania, that's enough." He let out, throwing the full weight of his glare her way, and she shrank into herself.
"I'm disappointed in you really, what has gotten into you these days?"
"But-"
"But nothing. That's enough with you, now leave. I'm tired of seeing your face." He ordered her and Lykania walked off, her invisible tail tucked tightly between her legs.
Soon enough, we were alone and it was my turn to bear the full weight of his gaze.
"I don't want to spend much time here with you either," he started, his gaze wracking over me like I was something nasty beneath his dress shoes, " but, stay away from the tray boy." He drawled. I had already given up trying to get him to get Trent's name right.
"And don't forget our deal." He ended finally, his eyes glinted with something I couldn't quite place. I swallowed, then nodded, and when he caught the little bob of my throat, he smiled. A smile a predator would showcase to his prey.
I tilted my chin up slightly. I was done being the prey.
He didn't catch that movement and turned away from me, not bothering to spare two more words on me. I watched him disappear into the crowd and rejoin my mother. Lykania was there too, evidently sulking at his treatment and I wouldn't be surprised if she had went and spilled everything to our Mother, who of course would believe whatever she said. Lykania would definitely color the story in her favour and our Mother would believe her without a doubt.
It was when I lost sight of them in the crowd that I was able to breathe easier. I kept to the side lines after that, and took great care not to run into any of my Father's friends because that would be a problem all in its own. I stared clear of their table, especially far from Alpha Vincent and Alpha Magnus, though their eyes would trail around the place and land on me, and their eyes would follow. I didn't like that one bit, or at all.
It was almost as if they were watching me and my skin pricked anytime I had my back turned to them.
Lively music played as people danced and enjoyed the celebration to the fullest, but I couldn't. Heavy weight rested on my shoulders and all that rung in my ears was the ticking clock in my head that refused to stop. A reminder that Orion could show up any moment from now and him being here would change everything for me.
For all I knew, my life would shatter before my eyes if things were to head south with Orion. And as the minutes ticked by, that was starting to look truer and truer. It got to a time where even eating couldn't help me, and everything had started tasting like nothing.
Dread. Dread and worry swarmed in my chest and I swallowed to keep those thoughts at bay.
"What are you thinking about?" A voice whispered in my ear and I nearly jumped out of my skin.
"Moon goddess! Geez man, Don't scare me like that, okay," I seethed, and all Varin could do was smile sheepishly.
"You wouldn't be all jumpy if you weren't a thousand miles away in your head," he defended and I shoved him in the arm.
"Hey, there's no need to be aggressive." He rolled his arm a few times as he pouted. If it was possible to loose your eyes at the back of your skull, mine would have already been gone with how much rolling my eyes were doing.
"And don't look at me like that, you know I'm right," he said, sounding so sure of himself.
"You were able to get away from your Father?"
"Yeah, I've had enough of him for one night."
My mind flashed to how observant Varin was, as I thought...
"Hey, did you notice anything... unusual?" I asked then winced at how pathetic the words had come out.
"By unusual, do you mean my Father and his friends eyeballing you?" He said, hitting the nail on the head and I nodded.
"I don't know exactly what they talked about because my Father made it a point to send me away from where they were any time they spoke. But I did hear something about you, Alpha Orion and Alpha Luciano."
"What was the conversation about?"
"That you are the reason both of these prominent Alphas are absent for the celebration."
"What!'
