Dusk came and so did my dinner, and I sent up blessings for Trent because he had made my imprisonment easier to bear.
Night rolled around, and this time, my sleep was dreamless and filled without pain. The rats that scurried across the stone floor didn't make comfort a virtue of my sleep, but that wasn't the only reason. My heart longed for it's other half, and this longing had been awakened when my grandfather told me to go.
Find your mate, Wyn. I could still feel his words caress my skin just as they did in my dreams, and determination crested in my chest. If I did choose to flee without waiting to be banished, it would be the single boldest thing I had ever done in my life.
I had buried that longing deep inside my chest not when I was still stuck here with no chance of escaping. My father would have gone berserk if I so much as dared.
"... Wyn... Wyn... You need to wake up." A voice called to me, and with a grumble, I rolled out of bed to answer my door. Except I wasn't in my bed, and there was no door. I was in a cell underground, being held unjustly but it was too late to stop myself. I met the cold floor with a groan as I rolled of off the bench I had been curled up on.
A hiss came through the bars and I turned over to glare at the hunched over frame of Trent.
"You could have told me to stop rolling you know," I grumbled.
"I did, buy you wouldn't wake up."
"Lies. I heard you calling my name and you didn't say anything about me rolling off," I defended.
"If you heard me waking you up, then why didn't you? You could have stopped yourself from falling too." He shot back and my mouth dropped open in shock.
"... What the hell!"
"Got you." He laughed, obviously enjoying my shocked expression. I laughed along with him because it had been a night time ago we had gone word for word, but it felt like ages had passed, and it was all because I was trapped in this God awful cell.
It felt... Normal to just talk and laugh. I needed normal.
I couldn't tell what the time was because the lighting always looked the same, but I could take a guess and assume it was still early in the morning.
"You came early today."
"I couldn't come last night, so I rushed here this morning. And here, I brought you breakfast," he said, before unlocking the cell and stepping in.
He placed the meal in front of me, settled on the floor next to me and watched me eat.
"Creepy," I stated, as I scarfed down the contents of my plate. Eggs, toast, bacon, clearly not food that was given to a prisoner.
"What is?"
"You watching me eat."
"Oh, that. I was just really worried about you." This was one of his go to sentences, and I wasn't surprised in the least to hear them. But I couldn't blame him either, I would feel the same if I were in his shoes.
"I'm fine," I tried to reassure him.
"I heard what happened to you yesterday, I just wish I had been there to stop her."
"How did you find out?" The place was empty aside her brain dead friends and the love sick guard.
"Dan told me, he said another of the guards was depressed that he still wasn't able to catch Lykania's fancy even though he had let her in and given her the keys to your cell."
"Depressed? Man, I didn't think it was that serious, he must be delusional."
"Don't change the subject Wyn. I want to know, are you really okay?" He said, clearly agitated, and I sighed.
"I'm alright, really. She couldn't cause much harm to me."
"And yet, I can see a fresh pair of bandages on you. Did you use your all that I left you?"
"I said she couldn't cause much harm, not that she didn't harm me at all. And yes, I did use it all up, the bandages weren't that much to begin with."
Trent cocked his head to the side and studied me, his eyes shining with an emotion I couldn't decipher.
"What? Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked, then pushed the plate I had long since discarded aside. I sat up, my back against the wooden bench as Trent siddled up next to me.
"It's just... How can you be so, so chill about everything? If I were you, I would probably have pulled my hair out about worrying of what to do next, but you've accepted everything."
"Accepted everything? And I'm not chill, I just don't want to panic as much, because trust me, I am but I won't let it show. Pulling my hair and worrying about everything won't get me out of here any faster." He nodded slowly, then rested his head against the wall.
"Why do I feel like you're about to tell me something I don't want to hear?" I asked, when Trent remained suspiciously quiet, and he made a strangled noise from the back of his throat.
"Spill. But first, is it something I'm not going to want to hear?" I asked again to prepare myself, and he nodded.
I inhaled, then expelled the breath harshly before turning fully to face him.
"I'm ready, what is it? And just give it to me straight, the faster you get it out, the faster I can come to terms with it if it's something bad."
"It's... The elders are the council are already here to decide what to do with you," he spilled out without pausing, but my breathing did.
Silence reigned, and it was only the force of the blood rushing in my ears that filled the space.
"Wyn," Trent whispered, when I stayed frozen.
"Could you repeat that?"
"The elders and council are already here, you Father gathered them," he stated, and his words stung. I expected my Father to do this, but it stung none the less. And to think he was so quick with it too, just how long had passed, a day, maybe two.
"He didn't waste any time, did he?"
"He didn't."
"And everyone's complete?"
"They are, he stated welcoming them in yesterday. I'm surprised Lykania didn't mention any of it to you."
I was surprised too because she never missed a chance to rub stuff like that in my face, but I guess she was too blind sided with rage to care. Or she was just savouring the moment until I found out myself.
A thought flashed across my mind, and I stopped.
"You said that they're complete, but doesn't it take a while to get the elders and council all together?"
"And he did that in only a couple of hours, but now they you've pointed it out, it doesn't add up."
"He had to have asked for them to come before, and it had to have been a while ago."
"But why would he do that? It's not like he knew any of this would happen, and I don't see any other reason he would have asked for them before."
"Well there has to be."
I didn't want to dwell on my Father's reasons because there was no time to do so. Trent's words had put me in a state of urgency and all I wanted to do was find a way out of here before it was too late.
I could always get a punishment greater than banishment...
The thought alone triggered more fear in me than I would like to admit.
"Now, what are you thinking about? I can see you mind working overtime in your head. It's all in your eyes."
"How to get out of here." My answer was simple, but it was the farthest thing from simple to do.
"Really? All of a sudden?"
"Trent I can't just stay here and let some old guys judge my life away, I'm my own person."
"I know that, but it's all so sudden. You didn't mention it until now."
"Yeah, I know."
I couldn't possibly tell him that I had a dream and my dead grandfather had all but told me to book it out of here and find my mate. He would probably think that I had been hallucinating from the pain.
"How do we plan to do it?"
"I haven't thought of that ye- wait, we?" I stopped in my words and eyed him.
"Yes we, did you think I would let you embark on something so dangerous alone, we are in this together." My heart fluttered in my chest at the determination in his voice and I wondered what I had done to deserve such a loyal friend.
"So you don't have a plan yet?"
"Nope, this place isn't exactly built for breaking and escaping."
Trent glanced around the room and shrugged.
"Well, leave your escape to me, I'll figure something out."
"No, I can't have you do all this, you've already done enough and-"
"Wyn, focus on getting healed up, and ledge the rest to me, I insist," he said calmly, then kicked off the ground, landing lightly on his feet.
"Wait, where are you going?"
"I have an escape plan to make."
