My chest burned from the fire in my lungs as we ran. The harsh wind whipped my hair but all I could feel was my feet under me as they lead me towards the border.
Almost there now, almost, come on, come on, I chanted in my head to distract myself from the rapidly approaching footsteps. Multiple of them.
Trent ran in front of me, his steps frantic as he dashed towards the tree line. I willed my body to move faster, I knew if we made it beyond the trees, it would be ten times harder to get to us.
"Hurry up, you idiots, you've been trained for situations like this, damnit," Nicky boy roared, his voice louder than i had ever heard it before.
"You take that side, while the rest of you, take the other side," he ordered, and put fo the corner of my eye, the guards had spread out in a large you and were shepherding Trent and I like cattle.
"We're not going to make it, they're gaining on us," Trent said, and my gaze flew to him. Sweat dripped down the sides of his forehead, and he clenched a now whimpering Daisy much tighter into his chest.
We were running side by side, and that's when the realization hit me that he was slowing down to keep up with me. He was larger than me, and plus he was trained for things like this. He could easily go much faster and leave me behind.
"I know you can run faster Trent," I said, my voice an implication enough of what I really meant. My gaze flickered to the approaching guards who were dangerously closer, and I felt my heart quicken in response. We didn't have much time now.
"I can't leave you behind."
"You have to, Trent." My vision blurred just thinking of what I was telling him to do.
"We're in this together, if they get to you, then they get to me."
"And what about Daisy, if they catch you, they won't let you go so easily. So you want her to grow up wondering why her brother left her alone?" My voice cracked at the low blow I delivered and Trent's jaw clenched in response.
"Don't Wyn, I can't -"
"You can," my voice was shaky now, "run Trent." His face contorted in pain, and I saw his eyes shift around as he decided on what he would do.
"And don't look back."
My voice was firm even as I took a sharp right. The last expression I saw on Trent's face was one of utter shock, but I didn't dwell on it as I willed myself to move faster, I needed to get the guards away from him and Daisy.
The guards faltered in their steps at my sudden turn before picking their selves up. Half of them ran towards me while the others continued on their path to Trent. They had wasted precious seconds and that had given Trent the advantage. He'd boosted up his speed, and he would be at the treeline in just a few more seconds.
The guards caught up to me in the blink of an eye and tackled me down, all through, my eyes were trained on Trent as I offered a fervent prayer up to the moon goddess for him. Please don't let him be caught.
The side of my face of buried in the wet earth, and just before the boots of the guards covered my line of vision, I saw Trent break the treeline and escape into the night. The guards had followed but it was too late now because Trent had more of an edge on them. It was dark out and he could easily sneak into a hiding spot.
A lone tear rolled down my cheek as I was hurled up by a furious looking guard. Nicky boy was no where to be found, and something told me he had gone to get a certain someone.
"You stupid bitch," another angry guard growled as they rough handled me back into the pack house.
We had made quite the commotion and that has woken up a few people at the pack house. The closer we got to the building, the more I dreaded facing my Father. I had never thought a place I called home for so many years would make shivers run down my spine in any way.
We breached the door, and the lights were turned on by some overly curious pack members. They were immediately shooed away by some other guards but they had seen enough to make gossip for a week. I would give it till day break for the news of my capture to have spread like wildfire.
Wildfire... I didn't want to think about that now. I would crumble if I did.
The harsh fingers of the guard holding me dug into my flesh, and I gritted my teeth not wanting to show my pain.
Initially, I had thought we were heading to the cell I had been transferred to, but the deeper we went underground, the more my heart sunk to my feet. I didn't even know the pack house had chambers this deep underground.
"Where are we?" I whispered on impulse.
"Shut up, and keep moving," the guard snapped, shoving me forward as if to prove a point.
Stale air tinkled my nose, and as far as I could see, the only things were carved stone walls and high pockets of air in what would have been the ceiling. I knew the pack was old, but never thought it would be old enough to have a network of literal caves underneath it.
I didn't know why I was being brought down hear, but I didn't like it one bit.
"Keep moving and stop gawking around, you stupid bitch," the same guard from earlier spat. The other one holding me shoved me again and this time, I couldn't catch myself fast enough and tripped on my own feet.
The sting of the stone on my knees made me groan, but at least nothing was broken... Yet. I didn't have time to gather myself before I was dragged back to my feet.
We walked down the cave like path for a few more minutes until it opened in a large space, and against the walls were tiny cave pockets lined on them. It was big enough to fit one, maybe two people and from how smooth the walls appeared, I took a guess and decided they were man made.
I was hurled into one of them, and the rickety iron bars were closed tightly. They didn't say another word and started walking back the way we had come, leaving me alone in this underground... Prison.
"Hey, what's going to happen?" I called out to them, even though I knew the hope of them answering was next to zero. And like I thought, they continued on like as if I hadn't said anything at all.
Alone, I sat down in the sandy floor, more dust than sand really. Fear creeped from my heart and took root in the rest of my body as I surveyed my surroundings. There was no one here.
The only illumination at all was from lamps lit with fire and mounted on the walls around the pocket of space. I didn't know why the sight of that alone casted more fear in my heart than I cared to admit.
I leaned against the wall, my back brushing the smooth surface, and with how horribly I had been treated for last couple of hours, it seemed like a luxury to me.
My body ached, my mind ached and so did my heart. The only thing that made me feel slightly better was the fact that Trent and Daisy had gotten away from here, and if the moon goddess had answered all my prayers, then they were safe and sound.
I could die peacefully knowing that I had helped him get away from the hell hole that had hurt me for many years.
I couldn't sleep, and I picked up every little sound that echoed off the walls. From the rats scurrying through the cracks in the walls, to the dripping of water from the ceiling, I heard it all.
That's why it was easy for me to pick up the slow, approaching footsteps. They were faint but the network of caves was quiet enough and echoed enough for me to hear.
I wanted to feel like I wasn't afraid of bothered by them but every fibre of being knew that was a lie. I dreaded the owner of those footsteps almost as much as I dreaded being dragged back into the pack house in disgrace.
The footsteps breached the pocket of space then stopped, and I didn't need to look up to know that my Father was frozen in motion staring daggers at me.
My head remained bowed even as he continued his path towards me, and they remained bowed when his shoes took up space in front of the cell bars.
"You really are a disappointment, and I'm not surprised, not even one bit, that you fell into my trap."
