"How do you feel, knowing that you've been a complete fool?" His words were like that of a person who was in control, but I knew better than that.
I knew it had been a trap way too late, but I couldn't understand why he was pressing on about it.
"Look at me." Three simple words, yet they held so much power. It was unheard of for an Alpha to use his Alpha voice on his own family members, but my family had been steadily breaking the norms of those unspoken rules. Just saying they were my family alone left a bitter taste in my mouth.
I reluctantly lifted my head up, and my eyes immediately clashed with the deathly gaze of his own. His look was pure steel, and it took me more effort than I cared to admit to not balk at his gaze.
"Look at you," he drawled, "so much fear in your eyes."
"It's all your fault they you're here, you do know that right?" His question was rhetorical, but the way he was looking at me made me think that he wanted an answer either way.
He squatted to my height, and the space in my cell suddenly shrunk in size even though he wasn't in it. And from how it was going, he wasn't going to bother to come in too.
As subtly as I could, I scooted back into the cell, and that little movement caught his eye. His eyes twinkled, and he smiled.
"Running away? You do know what happened a few minutes ago right?"
His questions were getting tiring and I wondered if he had just come here to gloat at having me caught.
"I knew you weren't sleeping that time," he said, his voice lower then before, but to me, it was louder than ever. I felt like face palming myself at how stupid I was.
Why would I think my Father would discuss something like that in front of my cell, no matter how trivial it seemed. He had set a simple trap, and I had fallen into it blind and deaf. I hadn't even stopped to consider how odd everything was.
"Finally getting it aren't you? I can see your brain working behind your eyes," he commented.
My eyes widened at his confirmation, then flew to his face. His expression was smug and was that if pure satisfaction.
"Let me let you in on another little secret," he paused, as if gauging my reaction before carrying on.
"Some of the elders and council members were in your side."
On some other day, his words would have evoked hope in me but his singular use of "were" made my hope shimmer and die because I knew I was screwed.
"They thought you were innocent and that I was being too harsh on you, they even said that what you did wasn't intentional and that you were just hurt," he spat, his gaze hardening, "I wanted to slap Elder Alonso for even suggesting that but I couldn't blow my top."
"Do you know why I said you're a fool and that everything was your fault?" He paused, waiting for an answer he and I knew I didn't know the answer to before speaking again. I could tell he was relishing the fact that I had no idea.
"It's because by attempting to run away, you proved that I was right. There's no argument on your trial now, I win," he stated triumphantly, the smirk that he had had plastered in his face going into a full fledged smile. He had got me good.
An anger that I didn't know I had rushed up to the surface and took hold of me, and I glared at him with my full might.
"Grandfather would be disappointed and embarrassed that his only child turned out like this." I didn't think my words would have any impact, but the way his face twisted into an ugly expression made me take back my words.
"Don't you ever mention him to me, ever."
"Grandfather was a wonderful person, he loved his pack and he loved his family. You on the other hand only care about power, and if you aren't careful, that power that you seek so badly will end up being the very thing that ends you." My words were bold, my expression bolder as I stared at him with an unwavering gaze.
His face has gone a furious shade of red and he looked this close to reaching through the bars and strangling me.
"He was a loser who was to scared to do anything. I was the one who made this pack great," he spat.
"Lies. You know it, I know it, hell, everyine in this damned pack knows it. But if that's what you tell yourself to make you feel better, then go in right ahead." I didn't know where my burst of courage was coming from, but I would ride it until it's very last wave.
I blinked, and the next moment, my Father's hand had shot through the bars and pulled my harshly. It all happened so fast and I was suddenly in his hold, his hand wrapped around my neck in a tight grip. I was at his mercy.
"I think you've forgotten who you're talking to," he said, his voice a deathly whisper.
"Did I strike a nerve?"
"Shut up!"
"Grandfather was more of a man and Alpha than you will ever be." The minute those words left my lips was the minute his hand left my throat and grazed my cheek in a searing slap.
My neck remained turned to the side, and I licked my lips as I trickle of blood rolled passed it.
"I said do not mention him in front of me."
My breathing was heavy, and I remained unmoving. My Father has remained quiet and I could only wonder what was running through his mind.
"Why?" The word left my mouth before I could figure out why I asked it. It was like I was asking about why everything was happening and why nothing was happening at the same time.
He glanced at his watch, then completely lost interest in me, and he ignored my question and rose to his feet. He didn't say another word and turned to leave, but before he left, I called out to him.
"You know you will get what is coming to you one day," I told him, and he stopped.
I thought he would come back to teach me a lesson but he stood, rooted to the spot. He didn't turn back to look at me, but his words left me puzzled.
"You really are your grandfather's daughter." With that, he exited the space where he was standing and left me alone.
Hours passed and my mind went every which way. I thought about escaping, I thought about accepting my fate, I thought about Trent, Daisy, Varin, Simon, Willow... I even thought I would be sentenced to death. Nothing was far fetched anymore.
I couldn't see the sunlight from the deep underground but the way the noises from outside grew and traveled through the walls told me it was day break.
I didn't know what to expect anymore, and I just sat idly and waited. With nothing better to do, I counted the seconds as they passed and I had gotten to somewhere over a hundred when I heard heavy footsteps strut towards the pocket of space.
Nicky boy broke the space, his harsh features trained on me as he approached. He didn't say anything to me and just hurled me on my feet like I wasn't a living, breathing person.
Quietly, he led me down the twisting pathways and as we went up higher, the air became less stale and easier to breathe in, I had almost forgotten how normally air smelled.
We made it to the level the pack house was on, and it was abuzz with life. It was almost as if nothing had changed, and they was true for most of the people I saw milling around in the hallways as we passed. But for me, my whole life has been tilted on its axis, and it was on its way of doing a 360° turn.
"Where are you taking me?" I asked, and he grunted.
"You aren't allowed to ask questions," he said in a harsh tone before looking ahead of him again like I wasn't there.
A deep sigh left my lips, and I let my body have a mind of its own as it let him haul me willingly to what would decide my fate like I wasn't capable of that by myself.
"Be quiet," he ordered when he brought me towards the familiar door of my Father's office. The place was usually quiet but today, it sounded like it was milking with people and I was still out the door.
Instinct told me that this was my trial, and I knew it was a lost cause to try to appeal on my case.
I took a deep breath as Nicky boy pushed the door open and lead me inside. I was stepping into the unknown, and nothing was in my favour.
