At least four heads snapped in my direction while the rest already had their eyes set on me- and some of them didn't look please with my words at all.
"Yes, that is all," the older elder in the room said. From his warm eyes and sympathetic gaze, something in my gut told me it was Elder Alonso, one of the few people who had wanted to be fair to me.
He, as well as the others had had a hand in my banishment, but for some reason, I couldn't find myself hating him or even disliking him in the least. He was tricked by my Father after all.
It was the stoic voice of another mature elder, this time the sour faced one who had mentioned more times in the past hour what a disgrace I had been to my Father and my pack. Elder Greg, I had disliked him almost immediately I heard the first condemning words come out of his mouth. I was sure he hadn't doubted my Father in the slightest when he had stated what I had done. And that was before hearing my side of the story or reviewing any additional information and evidence.
"Get your guard to escort her out of here," Elder Greg said, his words directed at my Father who looked ready to pounce on me still.
"Of course." He bowed which was one of the oldest sights to see. That single motion alone must have taken a lot of muster and courage because my Father bowed for no one. But he was in the process of repairing his ripped apart image so anything to get that back, I guessed.
I stood defiantly and stubbornly refused to look into the eye of any of people present in the room, and my chin only dropped when the door behind me opened with a creak.
I didn't need to see him to know my Father had sent, and now i thought, was my Father's most trusted guard.
It was when Nicky boy's finger tips brushed against my arm that I let my chin drop completely.
"Your banishnent is effective as of now," Elder Greg said, like I hadn't heard him the last two times he had repeated it. He ran a veiny hand through his salt and pepper hair as he glared at me staring. My eyes trailed from his to Elder Alonso 's, his own eyes nothing but pure sympathy filled in them, and I had started to hate that look.
The other council members and elders expression varied from impatience to disgust, and some just had pure hateful looks on their faces. It didn't concern me though but I didn't know them well enough to care.
What I cared about where the faces of the people I was supposed to rely on in my life.
Lykania didn't even bother to hide it anymore, and her face was a mask of pure satisfaction. Her lips stretched into a God awful smile and I knew she was relishing in the moment. Like Lykania, my Father held a similar expression of satisfaction but his was far more sinister. There was something predatory about the way his lip tilted up, and I turned away from him sharply.
My mother was what she had always been. A book, opened, with nothing ever on it to expect much.
I didn't get the time to continue looking around because I was turned towards abruptly towards the door that my arm protested.
Murmurs filled the room as I was leading our, and the sound of some chairs pushing back and scraping against the floor made me know I wouldn't even be banished quietly. Oh no, they were going to make an audience out of me.
"If you keep gawking around before you leave, I won't hesitate to gouge one eye out as a farewell present. And that's promise," Nicky boy whispered into my ear when no one was looking and I found myself swallowing. The stupid prick. But I didn't react other than that to his words.
He lead me along, and I didn't struggle, partly because I didn't have to energy to and also because we had an entourage of people I had mixed feelings for, following close behind us.
"She's finally being sent out hmph, good!" One voice said.
"What? Don't say that, she really hasn't done anything wrong." Another stated in my defence.
"She did embarrass our Alpha, Sarah," a third put in.
The pack house was abuzz with life, as always, but right now, at this moment, it felt like it was in a whole league of it's own. As we passed, the comments from random pack workers didn't escape my ears, and while some were okay to hear, some others were absolutely vile.
The voices and criticism were a combination of those who were sorry for me, those who were neutral, and those who couldn't wait to see me leave.
My chest tightened, and I drowned out the rest of the mutterings. I felt everything and nothing at the same time, and I had already made it this far without breaking out in tears, and I'm not about to now.
"Look at her, poor girl." One last voice caught my ear before I was pushed out into the harsh glare of the sun.
A couple of hours had passed since my capture, and now the sun was high. It was blinding but that didn't stop me from opening my eyes wide at the sight in front of me.
My sclera burned, but what burned more was the pile of items sitting in the open field and being doused in what I could assume was fuel.
Clothes, jewelery shoes, journals... Everything I owned, or at least what has been in my room, had been hurled outside to be erased from existence.
"... What is the meaning of this? Since when did we give the order for this to take place?" Elder Alonso askedashe stared at the sight in front of him. He looked genuinely shocked so I knew he hadn't been involved.
"I decided it Alpha Alonso, as an extra punishment for everything that happened in my pack," My Father said, his face smug.
Elder Alonso 's face squeezed into an angry look which made me realize I had never actually seen his angry before.
"And did it not cross your mind that you needed authorization for that? You can just go around setting fires and burning items willy nilly," he snapped, his voice firm as he directed the force of his gaze at my Father.
"I authorized him," Elder Greg said, he was quickly becoming a pain in my side and I had known him for all of two hours.
"And I appreciate your input so much Elder Greg, and thank you," my Father said, and Elder Alonso didn't look impressed, not one bit.
"Explain yourself Elder Greg," Elder Alonso demanded, completely losing interest in my Father who was currently floating at my expression.
"I don't need to explain anything to you, Elder Alonso," and I thought I could hear a bite in his voice when he said the other Elder 's name, "I can make minor decisions without you intervening." Elder Greg finished, and I couldn't unheard how proud of himself he sounded.
"... Why you, I can't believe this. You were only authorized to do that a few months ago, and you've been making reckless decisions left and right," Elder Alonso said, then shook his head in utter disappointment which in turn seemed to anger Elder Greg.
His face has gone an interesting shade of red than contrasted with he salt and pepper hair in an odd way. He opened his mouth to say something else to Elder Alonso but the latter simply raised his hand, which silenced him effectively.
It was clear who was the more powerful elder of the two. Elder Greg's face was still burning a furious shade of red when Elder Alonso turned to my Father.
"Stop this," he said. His command was simple but trust my Father to try and defy it. And defy it he did.
He snapped his fingers immediately, and I watched, my eyes wide as a little match was thrown on what was my whole life in this pack. Everything caught ablaze instantly, and the sizzle of the fire matched the cracking of my heart.
"How could you?" I whispered, sure I was the only one to hear my words. My eyes had turned glassy and everything seemed foggy around me.
"How could you?" Not me this time, Alpha Alonso said then turned to my Father, shock written in his face.
"It had to be done, she needed to learn her lesson," my Father stated.
"And you thought banishing her wasn't enough?"
The question hung in the air and Elder Alonso sighed, long and deep, a sigh of disappointment before turning away from my Father. His eyes trailed to me briefly, sorrow embedded in them, before he turned away and headed back I to the pack house.
"Nothing is going to be enough," my Father whispered, finally answering.
