I pressed myself deeper into my new found hiding spot, and as the footsteps approached, my breath seized.
Getting out of the forest before dark was not possible as the sun had already started to set, it would only take an hour maybe two before everywhere went completely dark and still. And that time wouldn't be a fun time to be out in the middle of the forest.
A male, who looked no older than myself stepped through the grove of trees, and he shook his shaggy brown hair as he looked around. I pressed myself into the shadows as his eyes skimmed the spot and I bit my lip when I saw his forehead furrow in confusion.
He turned away from me, his hand shoved into the pockets of his ratty jeans as he looked in the direction he had come from. Was he waiting for someone?
My question was answered when another male, his hair just as shaggy as the first, though darker stepped through the same spot.
"Where is she mehn, isn't she supposed to be with you?" Shaggy dark hair asked, his eyes sweeping the expanse of trees where they stood.
"I thought she was with you," shaggy brown hair answered with a groan.
"You lost her!"
"What do you mean I lost her? We were both together weren't we?"
"It was my job to scare her so she'd come running in your direction and it was your job to grab her, so yeah, you did lose her."
"Well, did you scare her?" Shaggy brown hair asked, as he rubbed the back of his head pathetically.
I was still hidden, though I wondered just what I had gotten entrapped into. By grab her, did he mean me?
"Of course I did you idiot! I just dropped a dead wolf in front of her and she took off running." Shaggy dark hair said proudly while the other still had his eyes firmly glued to the ground like the wilting grass was the most interesting thing to look at.
There was silence for all of three seconds when shaggy dark hair let out.
"You couldn't catch her, could you?" He asked, as he pushed his fingers through his hair, his sharp gaze directed on the other one.
"She was too fast," The other one breathed out, his head still down that his voice came out muffled.
"Too fast? We were told she was wounded for crying out loud." Shaggy dark hair brushes a hand over his face in exasperation before he looked at his brown haired counterpart.
"How can you not be able to catch a wounded woman who doesn't know her way inside a forest?" Shaggy dark hair reprimanded and the other just stood there, his whole body language screaming shame.
"You're unbelievable," shaggy dark hair scoffed, then started pacing in front of shaggy brown hair.
"We have to find her, she couldn't have gone far," he said, and that was when the other one looked up.
"Take that side, and I'll search for her over there," shaggy dark hair suggested, and he didn't wait for an answer before he strutted off in the direction he had pointed out for himself.
They both left my line of vision, and when I couldn't hear their footsteps anymore, I sagged against the tree's trunk as I lost all feeling in my legs.
I didn't care that the rough bark snagged my shirt here and there as I sank to my knees. My mind was reeking with a lot of thoughts but only three things stood out.
One, those goons were obviously after me. Two, someone had sent them to come after me, and I had already conjured up some options of who could be behind it. And three, if I didn't get out of this damned forest or at least hide, things were going to get ugly real fast. I didn't even want to think about what would happen if they did catch me.
I waited ages before I summoned the courage to step out of my hiding place because the spot had expired. If those goons looked well enough, they would find me if I didn't get my ass moving.
I stared in the directions they had both taken off in, and like any sensible person, I walked in the opposite direction. I did keep in mind that I needed to head towards to other edge of the forest while simultaneously looking for a hiding spot if I couldn't make it there in time.
Dusk was passing through swiftly, and it wouldn't take long for the day to give way to night. It was when the sounds of insects and all sorts of creepy crawlies increased that I abandoned the plan of making it to the edge of the forest. I didn't know my way around, and it would be ten times harder if I attempted to find my way in the dark.
I had just wormed my way into a hollow tree that I had found by chance, hidden in a circle of tall grass when i heard the alraming footsteps of one of those goons nearby. Whichever one it was, they paced some distance away for a few minutes, and I felt something rise up my throat before I pressed it back with an audible gulp. This wasn't the time to be afraid because I would be caught easily if I gave way to my fear.
His footsteps approached the tree I was hiding in, and my breathing stiffened the closer he got to me. That is until he stopped and paused in his tracks. I heard his footsteps retreat, walking back the way he had come when I heard another pair of footsteps, this time much closer.
I didn't have time to react when I heard a voice- right up against the tree.
"Did you find her?" The one at a farther distance asked and I shook my head when the other one let out a sigh of frustration.
"Obviously not, or else I wouldn't be empty handed right now, now would I," the closer voice reprimanded. I guess the sigh didn't work when it calm to calming down.
"So... What do we do now?" From the tone of voice, something told me that it was shaggy brown hair who asked.
