"No she isn't, and if you don't quit talking so loud, you might very well wake her up," the Doctor let out, clearly frustrated with her obviously younger counterpart.
"Me wake her up? You were the one who made her groan when you stuck a needle in her," the voice rushed to defend herself and the doctor stamped her feet impatiently.
"That's enough Trini, just how do you expect to become a Doctor if all you do is obstruct me from trying to help our patients," the Doctor yelled.
And immediately after her yell, the room was plunged into silence that even a knife could cut through the thickness of it.
I felt the voice I could finally place a name to, Trini, go still. I felt her retreat further away from the bed and from where I lay, it was like I could feel her presence retreating back into herself.
"I'm sorry Doctor Maya. I'll do better and help you," she apologized, and it was as if the spark of life that had flowed freely through her voice had mellowed down.
From above me, I heard the Doctor sigh before she went back to focusing on the examination she was conducting on me, and it was mostly her poking and prodding me with sharp, cold equipment. I knew it was for my own good, but I hated the feeling all the same.
The room remained quiet, but not that straining quiet like before as the Doctor worked. I could still feel Trini's presence by my side but she also decided to stay quiet.
It was when the Doctor's hands ventured to my rib and stomach area that I couldn't help the yelp that escaped me, giving away the fact that I wasn't still sleeping. There was no way a sleeping person could have reacted that way, and I could bet good money that the Doctor knew that as well.
"See, I told you she was awake," Trini chirped, once again pressing herself against the side of the bed.
I felt Trini lean over me as the Doctor finished her examination, before she set her equipment aside.
"Miss Lunawyn, are you awake?" Doctor Maya asked, and I would have answered if my tongue hadn't been stuck in my throat due to lack of use.
"Her lashes are fluttering, so I think she is," Trini put in and i grunted in response. I felt her face get even closer to mine, and her breaths brushed my face a little.
"Trini, back up a bit, you are getting yourself all over her," Doctor Maya reprimanded, and just as quickly as she had brought her face close to mine, it was taken away again.
"Miss Lunawyn, if you can hear me, take your time waking up, there is no rush," Doctor Maya added a moment later and it oddly made me feel better.
"Does she really need to sleep more?" Trini chipped in and I nearly bit my stiff tongue because I wanted to laugh.
"Trini... Has anyone told you that you say the oddest things?" Doctor Maya asked, clearly fed up because her voice was drenched in an "I'm tired of all this" tone.
"All the time!" Trini chirped happily, and I thought I heard a smack from somewhere, probably from the Doctor as she face palmed.
All through this, I had been struggling to get my tongue dislodged from the back of my throat and I had finally succeeded.
I tried opening my still shut eyes but was blinded again. What had I been expecting anyway?
With a hiss, I shuffled a bit in the bed and a single word left my dry lips.
"Lights..." I whispered and I was thankful that the Doctor had somehow understood me.
"She talked!"
It didn't sound like talking to me because my voice sounded like the screech of a dying cat, and my throat burned just from saying that single word.
Even though my eyes were closed, I could still feel when the lights were turned off because my eyes were immediately engulfed in "shade".
My cracked lips curled, and I cranked open my eyes as they stung from being shut for so long and being nearly blinded twice from the florescent lights in the room.
"Miss Lunawyn, how are you feeling?" Trini immediately asked, her face hovering over mine, and I could finally put a name to the voice and name.
She was pretty, with big dark eyes framed by unruly dark curls. In many ways, she reminded me of Alpha Darius's daughter, Layla, but that was were their similarities ended. Trini had chubby cheeks that turned rosy from attention, at least according to what I was seeing.
"Trini, what have I told you about crowding patients?" Doctor Maya asked before I could reply to Trini's question.
"That I should stop doing it because it makes most patients uncomfortable," Trini answered.
The Doctor entered my line of vision, and I was surprised at her appearance.
She pushed her wavy dark hair into a ponytail before coming closer again to check on me. Her eyes were the warmest brown I had ever seen, and she looked so friendly and motherly at the same time.
"Miss Lunawyn, did you hear me ask about how you were feeling?" Doctor Maya asked, and my parched lips parted to give her a response.
"I... Feel o- okay." My voice broke in between the words as I attempted to speak.
"Trini, get her some water asap," Doctor Maya ordered, and Trini shuffled away for a few seconds and came back with a glass of water that was looking like the best drink on earth to me right about now.
I greedily gulped down the contents of the glass as I felt some much needed moisture flow through my dry throat and chest. I licked my lips loudly, wanting more, and Trini did well to get me as much as I needed.
"I'll need to examine you again, to check for anything I might have missed," Doctor Maya told us and I grimaced at having to be poked and prod again.
"I'll be gentle, I promise," she reassured when she saw my less than pleasant expression.
"You'll be fine." Trini chirped in reassurance, and I smiled at her.
"I will be," I breathed out, then focused on the hands roaming over me.
