I was so glad when Trini didn't push on it, and instead wheeled me over to where I wanted to go.
Immediately we crossed over to the hallway, the air shifted and I instantly sensed something was up. First, there was next to no sound and I became hyper aware of the creaking that came from the wheels as Trini pushed me. Second, it almost seemed like this wasn't a part of the hospital at all.
The grey walls of this hallway contrasted heavily with the hospital white of the other hallways I had seen so far. From afar, the difference wasn't clear, but it became obvious the closer you got to it.
"Why is it so quiet here?" I whispered, because for whatever reason, the situation called for it.
Trini's eyes scanned the place for a moment before her eyes found mine again.
"I don't know." She said faintly, then added, "this is the first time I have been here actually."
And that made me lift my brows up in surprise. What worker wouldn't have been to every part of the hospital at some point in time?
"How is that possible? You work here."
"We aren't allowed to come here," she muttered, and my figurative eyebrows shot to the top of my hairline.
"What!"
"... Yeah, I shouldn't have said that."
"Why shouldn't you have said that? In fact, you should have mentioned that before." My nostrils flared as I let out a hot breath before continuing. "What if there are rogues locked up in there?"
"In a hospital? Impossible."
"But what if they were? Which is why this section is closed off and it could also be why the door have freaken metal bars on them!"
Trini's head snapped to the doors at my statement, and her big dark eyes went even rounder. It was easy to miss even though it sat glaringly obvious. But, some of the doors towards the darker end had subtle bars in front of them. They were all closed and I didn't need to touch them to know it was one of the metals that was deadly to rogues.
"... Oh- I, how come I didn't see this before?" For the first time since I had known her, Trini's voice came out shaky and I knew her fear was building up quickly.
She had started pushing me much slower, and a quick glance at her hands showed the tight grip she had on the handle. Her knuckles wrapped tightly around it, and with how tight it was, they had gone white. I was even surprised she could still feel them and that they weren't feeling numb yet.
"Why did you conveniently forget to spill the fact that people aren't allowed here?" I asked slowly, and her shoulders slumped.
"I'm just like you damn it. I've been dying to know what's going on here and why we aren't allowed to come here," she let out, and I could see her chest rising and falling more rapidly as she spoke.
"Is that it?"
"Yeah. I just never expected that it would be some kind of torture hall. Damn, I thought it was like an in hospital morgue."
"An in hospital morgue?" That was the single most terrifying thing I had heard come out of her mouth.
"Don't ask," she said gravely, and I didn't press in it further.
I think we were both possessed because we kept going down the hallway even as our breathing intensied. And I was sure they did because I could hear the quiet huffs coming out of Trini. The hallway was hella quiet enough.
"Okay, I think that's enough exploring for one day," I muttered and Trini stopped pushing. We remained motionless and with a frown, I turned over to look at her but she wasn't looking at me, and there was no funny expression on her face.
Her eyes were trained on something ahead, and I followed her line of vision. Just ahead, a few doors down, her eyes were fixed on a door. And that door wasn't locked. From where I sat, I could see it was slightly ajar and I could pick up noises that sounded a lot like... Groans?
"Trini..." But she was too caught up in herself to hear me, and her eyes glazed over as she went deeper in her mind.
I gripped her cold fingers as a second resort, and she jolted out of her daydream.
"Sorry."
"I think we should get out of here, I'm not having a good feeling about us staying here any longer." My voice was barely above a breath but she heard me just fine and nodded in agreement.
Her fingers flexed as she gripped the handle tighter but just before she turned us around, a harsh groan pierced through the air, and it was coming from that room.
We paused, and I felt a chill current roam through my whole body, and it looked like it passed to Trini too because she was just as stiff as I was.
We remained where we were, and the only thing that seemed to be functioning between us were our ears.
"Who sent you?" A voice came from the room, and though my memory of what happened after the attack was fuzzy, the voice sounded like i had heard it on that day.
"... I can't... Tell-" another voice gurgled though its words, and the owner of the voice sounded like they were in immense pain as they gasped and tried to catch that breath.
"I think you'll have to come up with another decision, because whether you like it or not, you are going to tell me who sent you," the domineering voice threatened and i heard the other one take in a sharp breath.
The other voice broke into a full fledged sob and started rambling, "I swear!... I swear... I- I can't tell you. They will kill me if I do!" The ramblings came out like a mad man's and I had trouble picking apart what he said.
I felt Trini's fingers press harder into the handle and also against my back. A reminder that I wasn't alone while listening to this.
My heart slammed in my chest when Trini pushed me forward, and I turned back to glare at her, only for her to put a finger to her lips to shush me.
We were a step from the door, and I was certain that we would be at full view to whoever was inside if they just tilted their head out.
"Ryan, are you sure you want to make this decision. Think about your brother," the domineering voice stated and my eyes bulged.
It was one of those freaken bastards.
