That name reverberated through me and I felt my anger bubbling beneath my skin. The aches in my muscles, the slight tingling in my side, and the fact that I was currently wheelchair ridden were all after effects of what Ryan and his obnoxious brother had done to me.
So they weren't dead huh, and they had been brought in for questioning. At least that answered the many questions that had been swirling through my mind since I woke up in the hospital room that had now become my home for days now.
"What's the matter?" Trini seemed to sense my mood and placed a gentle han on my shoulder, giving it a squeeze as if to say "you are not alone."
"Whoever is in there is interrogating one of my attackers."
"Oh,... I'm sorry you went through all that." Her words were a whisper of sympathy and I placed my own cold fingers on hers to show that I appreciated it.
I wondered how I hadn't recognized the asshole, Ryan's voice before. It did sound like him but he also sounded like he had screamed so much that what was left of his voice was a screech that was hard on the ears.
A predatory satisfaction ran through me as I thought at how he was getting what he deserved. Wherever his brother was, I hoped he got the same treatment too. And from the other voice's statement, it was very likely, if not worse.
"We can leave if you aren't comfortable being here," Trini suggested, but I was all ears now.
"No. I'm staying." My voice was firm, and Trini didn't press further and continued to stand behind me, a warm presence that made me feel that I wasn't alone.
I needed to hear what was going on because It would be some sort of closure until I got more answers. I had already been through a lot so I didn't know why someone out there still wanted to make me go through more hell.
"Are you still deciding?" The domineering voice asked, and that was when I felt Trini lean closer to my ear.
"It's Beta Cole that's interrogating him," she told me, and I nodded. So he had been the one in the forest that day along with Luciano. It sounded fitting.
"Please, I... I can't..." Ryan's voice trailed off and I heard the Beta growl.
"Just how many people had begged you like this and you had just stood there, laughing in their face?"
"I'm sorry,... I'm sorry."
"You want me to pardon you? Did you do it for them?"
"I'm sorry, I... I didn't have a choice... I didn't want to die!"
As the interrogation progressed, Ryan sounded more and more pathetic and his words were more of sobs than words. His sniffles echoed down to where I sat, and I scrunched my face, remembering how he and his brother had mocked me and hurt me in that forest.
"Wyn, I think we should leave, this isn't nice to hear," Trini suggested again in a small voice but I brushed her off.
"I'm staying Trini," I stated, my voice hard, but one look at her and my features softened.
Her face was gray, and her eyes darted around, worry etched in their depths.
"I need to stay. To know." My voice was softer this time, and I saw her eyes jump back and forth, considering what I said before she gave me a slow nod.
"Okay."
I turned back to the door, just in time to hear the Beta ask Ryan another question which he sobbed through. I had started to get annoyed, and with the way the Beta's tone tightened, he was feeling the same thing.
"Does your brother know you are so pathetic? Crying without any restraint?"
The Beta's words should have stung but Ryan was too far gone in pain to care.
"Please..." He begged and the Beta sighed.
"I'm tired of this back and forth, frankly you are wasting my time, and I have a pile of paperwork waiting on my desk that isn't going to go through itself, so let's wrap it up. I'll ask you this one more time and if you don't give me what I want to here, then you better pray to the moon goddess for more pain tolerance because I won't go easy on you."
Threats after threats spewed from the Beta's mouth and Ryan's voice wracked with sobs.
"Now Ryan, let's try this again. Who sent you to attack Lunawyn Comar?"
Hearing my full name made this all the more real and my ears were perked up. Silence reigned for a moment and I heard a sigh.
"Ryan, you have ten seconds to give me an answer. One... Two... Three..."
The Beta continued counting until he got almost to ten, and Ryan only gasped louder at what would be his impending doom because he still hadn't fessed up.
"Nine... Ten. Ryan, this is your last chance. Give me an answer."
"I... Can't."
His words echoed before the whole hall descended into deafening silence, and it sounded like the Beta had left. But of course that wasn't the case because Trini and I were still here.
A piercing roar came from the Beta, and I heard something crash loudly at the door. Trini squeaked loud enough for someone else to hear, and I felt my fear come true because the next moment everything went silent.
Trini clamped a hand over her mouth, but it was too late to retreat. The door barreled open and a tall muscled man stood there, his gray eyes alight with fury as he glared at us with all the anger he had been lashing out at Ryan.
His sharp gaze passed from Trini then settled on my face, and his eyebrows drew together at presumably recognizing me.
"Shit." He blew a breath through his teeth, then wracked his claws extended hand over his mass of brown curls.
"Shit, shit, shit."
He strolled out of the room and locked the door behind him, even as he directed another glare our way, or more specifically to Trini who had gone deathly white.
"Are employees allowed in this part of the hospital?" He growled and Trini shook her head more times than necessary.
"Use your words," he drawled.
"No, they aren't." Trini audibly swallowed but I had to applaud her because she hadn't dropped her gaze away from his face even once.
"Then why did you come here?"
And this time he looked at me too.
