"It was my fault, I was the one who asked Trini to bring me here." I jumped to her defense, rolling the wheelchair forward to act as a shield between her and the Beta.
"I don't care. She is a worker here and should know better." His voice was low when he responded, and he took a step towards us.
"Just what am I going to do with the both of you?"
"I'm sorry, I promise I won't tell anyone what we heard, please forgive us," Trini begged, and the Beta cocked his head to the side.
"And I'm just suppose to take your word for it?" He asked, sounding very much unimpressed and I sucked in a breath.
"If you are going to punish anyone, punish me. I'm the one who forced her to stay when all she wanted to do was the opposite." I met his eyes, my voice unwavering and something sparked in their depths, and that was all the emotion he showed- or all the emotion he allowed to seep through his facade of calmness.
Trini however was an open book, and she gasped at my words, her mouth falling open as she stared at me.
"No Wyn, why would you say that? It isn't your fault, I knew the rules and still brought you here regardless of it," she said, and I wanted to wack her in the head because now wasn't the time to be the righteous one. In a way, it was protecting her the way I could because my mind fleeted to the times where I couldn't help Trent and the ache was still in my chest because of it.
"It was my fault Beta Cole," I said, turning away from Trini and casting all my attention on the very entertained Beta.
"You both are so sweet to each other," he mumbled, his words dripping in honey and vinegar before he leveled his eyes on me.
"You said I should punish you instead, but what's left for me to punish? Or did you somehow forget you're in a wheelchair?"
I steeled my expression as I answered. "I can handle it, it wouldn't be the first time."
His jaw tightened and Trini's eyes went slick with moisture as she stared at me with a look in her eyes, as though she was seeing me for the first time.
"I won't punish anyone injured person that hasn't done me any wrong," he gritted out, his jaw clenched and I sighed.
"And Trini?"
"I think you should leave her to speak for herself."he glanced to her, and her head was bowed as if accepting the punishment she had not even been given yet.
"And face the consequences of her actions," he added after the pause.
"And I told you that I forced her." I stubbornly defended Trini, and I watched the Beta's gaze drift from my face to my legs and back up again.
He didn't need to say anything because his expression said all the words for him. It was as if he was saying "you that is injured and in a wheelchair forced someone who has nothing physically wrong with them to do something?"
"And I said she knows the rules." He looked away from me and brought his heavy gaze back to Trini who was now visibly trembling. She looked nothing like the snarky sharp mouthed friend I had made.
"Trini, was it? Take her back to her room and meet in my office later this evening."
"Of course." He didn't spare me another glance before turning away from both of us and unlocking the bolted door.
"Oh and, I don't want either of you lingering around here, so leave now," he added before he pushed into the room, and this time, he made sure to close and locked the door properly behind him.
Nothing, silence. I stared at the door a moment later before I noticed how thick it truly was. The room was soundproof so it was pure luck Trini and I had come here when the door was ajar. If it wasn't so, we could have explored this hallway none the wiser about what was going on.
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and my chest loosened a bit, and I was finally back in the moment.
"Trini," i whispered, but she responded with gripping the handles deathly tight and rolled us out of the hallway of torture.
My body still vibrated from everything I had experienced in the span of a few minutes, and there was this heaviness that hung in the air as both Trini and I were lost in thought.
We got to the room in no time, and she hooked me up to all the machines, her face downcast as she refused to meet my eyes. I didn't like seeing her like this, and worry built up in my chest.
I grasped her trembling hand, evidence that the situation had gotten to her much more than I realized and I held it down, not allowing her to shake off my grip.
"Trini, pleas talk to me. Having you this quiet is scaring me more than you know."
As if my words and my touch sucked all the strength from her, she sighed, crumbling on the side of the bed before finally meeting my eyes.
"I'm sorry Wyn, it was my fault. I should have pressed for us to leave then and-"
"It's okay. It's not your fault, I was being stubborn which was what lead to this and I'm so sorry."
Guilt ate away at me and I felt utterly useless because once again, a friend of mine would be punished because of my actions.
"I don't want to argue anymore," she whispered after a good while, and I nodded.
"Me neither."
"Do you have any idea about what kind of punishment he could give you?" I asked and she shook her head.
"But it won't be something so serious like you are thinking." And that put me at ease. Sort of.
"I'll probably be suspended or something like that," she muttered again.
We stayed in each other's presence before the door creaked open and Doctor Maya came through.
"Trini, you are needed elsewhere."
