The mood in the hospital room had been bearable, but at Doctor Maya's words, I felt it plummet to the floor.
"Of course." She got up and left with not even a glance back at me, but the sniffle she had tried to cover up with a cough told me all I needed to know.
The door let out a soft thud as she left, and I was left alone with Doctor Maya, which was a rare occurrence because most of the time Trini would come in.
Doctor Maya sighed, her brown eyes looking darker than usual as she glanced at the space Trini had occupied in front of her door.
"Will she be okay?" I asked, and Doctor Maya's gaze trailed to my face. As if sensing my worry, she took a deep breath and settled on the spot Trini had been in less than five minutes ago.
"She will be. She's a good kid, kind of impulsive, but she has a good heart and a great mind in that block head of hers." I hadn't expected the praise and insult combined, and I choked on my laughter as a sense of lightness washed over me.
"Block head?" I couldn't help myself, I had to ask. A faint smile settled on my lips as I waited for the Doctor's response.
With a smile that matched my own, she added, "I meant it. She's a good person but you have to tell her something a million times before it'll stick to her head. I'm sure I've mentioned for her not to go into that section of the hospital at least a dozen times now but it's clear my instructions never stuck because she did as she pleased."
"But I coaxed her to."
Doctor Maya tilted her head to the side and examined me.
"I've known her longer than you do Wyn, and let me tell you, your "coaxing" was just a go ahead to her. She would have later done it with or without you."
"Oh." I breathed out for lack of a better response.
"And now she's being punished for it." Doctor Maya shook her head, her eyes aglow with disappointment as she stared at the door, almost as if she could see Trini being punished through it.
"Trini told me she would probably get suspended," I stated and the Doctor nodded in response.
"She may be given a severe warning if she's lucky but I'm not hoping on it."
"Why not?"
"Trini's other name is curiosity because this isn't the first time she's been caught in places she's not supposed to be in. The difference in this situation is that it was our Beta who caught her. The other times it had been maids, random pack members,... Me," at that, she chuckled before continuing, "and if the person's rank is too high, a warrior. It had never been any of the big three."
I sucked in a breath. That did reduce Trini's chances of getting off with a lighter punishment if she was reported often, it would be like she was a repeat offender.
"Exactly." Doctor Maya agreed, and that was when I realized I had said all that out loud.
"She's been reported a few times already but not to the Alpha or Beta. Most times it's the Gamma, or even me since she's under me at the hospital."
I sighed. "... Trini."
"Trini."
Doctor Maya got up from her spot and I immediately knew it was a sign our conversation was about to end and she had already slipped back into Doctor mode and was about to ask me how I was feeling.
"How are you feeling?" There we go. A chuckle escaped me at how accurate I was and she gave me a funny look.
"Care to share what's cracking you up?"
Okay, so we hadn't quite entered full Doctor and patient mode yet. She went over to check my IV then started looking down at her clipboard thingy.
"You," I drawled and that got her to pause.
"Me? I don't know what I could have said that's so funny.'
"It's not what you said but what you do." My words seemed to confuse her more because she dropped both her hands dramatically and casted her full attention on me.
"Elaborate."
"It's just that you get this look on your face and I immediately know you are about to go into Doctor mode, and the first question you always ask is "how are you feeling?""
Her eyebrows quirked, "really?"
"Really."
She remained motionless for a few seconds before shrugging it off.
"I didn't know I was so predictable."
"It's only when you are about to go back to being just my Doctor."
"Am I something else other than your Doctor?" Her question struck something in me, and it stung a bit but I couldn't blame her.
She was several years older than me even if she didn't look it. Her hair was tied in a sleek ponytail like it always was and her brown eyes were always so expressive, giving her a good dose of youth. But the tone of her voice and the way she carried herself gave away how old she truly was.
"Well... I had started to see you as a friend, but it's okay if you see me as too young and all."
Her eyes flared, and she looked genuinely shocked.
"Too young? How old do you think I am! Wait leave that, how old do I look? Do I look old?"
Her reaction was funny and a soft laugh left my lips.
"No, you don't look old but you do look older than me."
"Um, I'll let you know I'm at the young age of twenty- seven, not old at all," she scoffed and I smiled.
I could see why her and Trini got along.
"Yes ma'am," I teased, and she rolled her eyes.
"Okay, enough of the old lady nuances. You can call me Maya, enough of that Doctor Maya stuff," she said and I smiled deepened.
"Alright, Maya."
"Much better."
"Do you know you're a lot like Trini?" I didn't know why that was the next thing I decided to say but Maya sighed.
"Don't remind me."
