While Sofia was having a full-blown meltdown, Camila stayed cool as a cucumber.
With a dismissive scoff, Camila dropped the bomb: "Just so you know—I was the one who ended things. I dumped your son."
She didn't even flinch under Sofia's murderous glare, casually adding, "And don't worry—I'm not about to chase after him. A guy who can't keep his zipper up isn't exactly a catch."
Then, with icy precision: "Oh, and one more thing—watch your mouth. Talk trash like that again, and I will slap you silly."
Without another glance, Camila brushed past her, leaving Sofia gaping in her wake.
Sofia stood frozen, eyes wide, disbelief flashing across her face. Was that really Camila? Did she grow a spine overnight? Who the hell does she think she is?
The more she replayed it, the hotter her rage burned. Hands shaking, she yanked her phone from her purse and dialed Noel, screeching into the receiver: "What the hell is wrong with Camila? She actually talked back to me!"
"Noel, I don't care how you feel—dump her right now, or I swear to God, I'll throw myself off a bridge in front of you!"
Noel was mid-meeting when his mom's call came through. Just her calling was unusual enough—but the hysterics? That was next-level.
"You ran into her today?" he asked, baffled.
Sofia snarled, "You think I'd sound like this for fun? That little gold-digger's gotten way too bold now that your grandmother's wrapped around her finger. Break it off, or don't bother coming home!"
Noel pinched the bridge of his nose, stepping into the hallway. "Calm down. I'll talk to her."
Hanging up, he rubbed his temples. Camila's pushing her luck. She knows Mom hates her—why poke the bear? Does she not want this marriage anymore? Or is Grandma's favor going to her head?
Sofia's temper eased slightly at his promise, but she couldn't resist a final jab: "I'll never understand what your grandmother sees in her. That tacky, low-class nobody isn't fit to shine your shoes!"
Noel's jaw tightened at the insults but he kept his tone neutral. "I'll bring her by to apologize later."
"Save it," Sofia spat. "Seeing her face makes me sick."
As she ranted on, Noel cut in: "Don't forget—lunch with Mr. Walker's daughter today. And for God's sake, smile. Try not to scare her off."
Noel grunted a noncommittal "Yeah" and hung up. These forced setups were nothing new—he'd long since mastered the art of dodging them.
Within seconds, he texted Luke the restaurant details with a note:
[You go instead.]
Luke: [???]
Noel: [Mom's blind date. Go eat, be polite, bail after dessert.]
Luke fired back a smug GIF: [Aha! Keeping Shirley from blowing a fuse, huh? Don't worry, I'll charm her socks off.]
Noel frowned. What does Shirley have to do with this? But explaining felt exhausting. He left it at a thumbs-up and exited the chat.
His thumb hovered over Camila's contact. That call replayed in his mind, his frown deepening.
