The silver-haired hospital director emerged from the conference room with a furrowed brow. "Calvin, what's the deal with Dr. Hemming?"
Calvin Parker, Johnathon's assistant, shrugged helplessly. "Beats me. Everything happened so fast."
The director rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "You think it's family trouble?"
Calvin stayed quiet. In five years working with Johnathon, he could count on one hand the times his boss mentioned family. Johnathon was a mystery - private, unassuming, like he existed in his own separate universe.
Meanwhile, Camila sat motionless on a hospital bench, lost in thought. When she finally checked her phone, she grabbed her bag and got up to leave.
Then that deep, unmistakable voice stopped her. "Ms. Bateman?"
Her breath caught. For a heartbeat, the world seemed to tilt. There he stood in his white coat - so impossibly perfect he might've stepped out of some romantic fantasy. Camila felt her pulse stutter.
But she quickly recovered, flashing a surprised smile. "Dr. Hemming! So you work at Emberwick?"
He closed the distance between them, his gaze sweeping over her with professional concern. "Small world. You feeling okay?"
"Well..." She hesitated. "Yes and no."
Johnathon tilted his head. "Explain."
"I came to get my hand checked," Camila said, gesturing to the crowded waiting area. "But the line's halfway to next week."
One dark eyebrow arched. "Trying to see Dr. Quilter?"
Camila blinked. "How'd you guess?"
"Herbal remedy scent," he said simply. "Means you stopped by Traditional Medicine. And Quilter's the department rockstar."
Camila's mouth fell open. "That's... scarily observant."
Johnathon offered a ghost of a smile before locking eyes with her. "Come with me."
"Excuse me?"
"Calling in a favor." Before she could protest, Johnathon guided her through staff-only corridors to the fifth floor. He stopped at an oak door, rapping twice. "Dr. Quilter?"
Andreas Quilter looked every inch the wise elder - slender, bespectacled, exuding quiet intellect. His eyebrows shot up at the sight of his visitor. "Dr. Hemming! To what do I owe the pleasure?"
Johnathon was the hospital's untouchable golden boy - aloof, clinically professional. Titles meant nothing to him; he never networked, never played politics. When not in surgery, he vanished into his lab like a ghost.
So seeing him at anyone's door was shocking. Seeing him with a beautiful woman? Downright earth-shattering.
"Could I trouble you for a consult?" Johnathon asked in that velvet baritone.
Being approached by the famously unapproachable Dr. Hemming left Andreas both flattered and flustered. The normally reserved professor suddenly became the picture of hospitality - summoning his assistant for refreshments, all smiles and animated chatter.
As Johnathon explained, Andreas kept sneaking glances at Camila. Finally, he blurted, "Is this your girlfriend?"
The hospital's most eligible bachelor showing interest in a woman? Unthinkable. Andreas couldn't imagine any other reason for this special treatment.
Camila's cheeks burned. This was clearly getting wildly misinterpreted.
Andreas nodded to himself. Mystery solved. No wonder he dodged all those nurses. The man's taken. What a devoted partner.
