Her eyes raked over Camila with undisguised contempt, her nose practically turned up to the ceiling. The judgment dripping from her gaze couldn't have been more obvious if she'd spelled it out in neon. "Shouldn't you be waiting hand and foot on Noel? What are you doing at a hospital this early?"
The woman was none other than Noel's mother—Sofia Anderson, the reigning queen of the Anderson dynasty. In their elite circles, people scrambled to kiss the ground she walked on.
Sofia had been visiting a friend in the hospital. She'd just stepped out of the inpatient wing when she spotted a familiar silhouette. At first, she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her, but no—there was no mistaking that face. It was Camila.
She'd never approved of this so-called future daughter-in-law. In her mind, her brilliant son deserved someone with pedigree, beauty, education, and grace—not the daughter of some mediocre engineer who couldn't even navigate high society without stumbling.
If it hadn't been for Camila's father getting lucky enough to save Noel's grandfather years ago, Sofia thought bitterly, and Noel's grandmother insisting she was the perfect match, this girl would never have gotten within ten feet of our family.
Her disdainful gaze flicked down to Camila's belly, her expression twisting as if she'd just smelled something foul. "You're not here for a pregnancy checkup, are you? Take a good look at yourself."
"Even if you did have Noel's child, I'd never acknowledge it. Save yourself the humiliation and let go of that pathetic fantasy of marrying into this family."
She scoffed, "Instead of scheming your way in with some backdoor baby, why don't you focus on actually taking care of Noel? Maybe when he does marry, he'll remember your service and toss you a few crumbs on your way out."
Three years ago, Sofia might have been even crueler. But time had dulled her fury—slightly. Noel's grandmother, Erica Anderson, had always doted on Camila, insisting she was the only acceptable choice for Noel.
But Sofia knew better. Erica wouldn't live forever. The moment she was gone, the Anderson empire would be hers to command.
In Sofia's grand design, Noel would never actually marry Camila. That "fiancée" title was just a placeholder. Once Erica passed, she'd pair him with someone worthy—a true socialite, not some nobody's daughter.
Still, she wasn't about to let Camila off easy. She expected the usual meek submission, but instead, Camila let out a sharp, mocking laugh.
"Relax, Mrs. Anderson. I have zero interest in having Noel's child. And as for marrying into the Anderson family?" She smirked. "You can keep that 'honor.' I don't want it."
Her tone was breezy, but the sarcasm cut like a knife.
Noel had always respected his mother. In the past, Camila had swallowed every insult, every snide remark, every petty humiliation—just to keep the peace for him.
She'd bent over backward to please Sofia, memorizing her preferences, molding herself into the perfect society wife. But in the process, she'd lost herself.
Not anymore.
Now that she and Noel were over, she had no reason to tolerate Sofia's nonsense. And she wouldn't.
Sofia was used to people tiptoeing around her. No one talked back—least of all Camila, who'd once taken every jab in silence.
That she of all people would dare defy her now? Unacceptable.
Rage ignited in Sofia's chest, white-hot. She jabbed a manicured finger in Camila's face, her voice trembling with fury. "Who the hell do you think you are, speaking to me like that?"
"Don't fool yourself into thinking Erica's favor will protect you forever. One word from me, and Noel will drop you like trash."
Camila didn't flinch. "Save your breath. Noel and I already broke up."
