Mom gave my hand a gentle squeeze as she led me inside.
"From now on, just relax and enjoy being home," she said, her voice soft and warm. "Do whatever makes you happy. If you don't want to marry for the family's sake, you don't have to. Your father and I won't push you anymore."
My throat tightened with emotion, words failing me. All I could do was squeeze her hand back, hoping she understood just how much her words meant to me.
The days that followed were blissfully peaceful. My parents and sister doted on me, and even the household staff went out of their way to make me feel cherished. I slept in without guilt, indulged in all my favorite foods, and sometimes tagged along with my sister to the family company. Life felt... easy. Light. Like I could finally breathe again.
As for Shirley and Digby? I didn't go looking for updates, but given the scandal she'd caused trying to destroy me, the news found its way to me anyway.
The investigation by the Securities Commission and the police wrapped up quickly—too much evidence to ignore. The Davison Group was nailed for financial fraud and corporate bribery. Shirley, as the mastermind, got ten years behind bars. Digby, her loyal lapdog, got five. Their assets were seized, their company collapsed, and their so-called empire turned to dust overnight.
Rumor had it Shirley lost the baby in prison, and after that, her health went downhill fast. As for Digby? Let's just say prison wasn't exactly kind to him either.
But honestly? I couldn't bring myself to care. All that mattered was that my life had finally taken a turn for the better.
One afternoon, my sister sidled up to me with a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"Cyril, remember the Parkers' daughter? The one who used to follow you around like a shadow when we were kids?"
I blinked, then laughed. "Yeah, of course. Didn't she go abroad for school? We kinda lost touch after that."
My sister's grin widened. "Well, she's back now. And still single. Want me to set something up?"
I arched a brow, smirking. "What, are you moonlighting as a matchmaker now?"
She threw her hands up in mock surrender. "Hey, I'm not about to pressure you like Mom and Dad did. But she's a great girl. If you're curious, I could arrange a casual meet-up."
I shook my head, smiling. "Maybe later. Right now, I'm happy just living life and helping out with the business."
To my relief, she didn't push it—just ruffled my hair affectionately. "Fair enough. Whatever you decide, I've got your back."
Her words settled warmly in my chest. In that moment, it hit me just how lucky I was. I had my family, my freedom, and a future full of possibilities. What more could I want?
As for love? Well... I'd let fate handle that. I had all the time in the world to wait for the right person to come along.
