"That never even crossed my mind," Hallie said calmly.
"Only you know the truth about that," Nelson replied, his voice neutral but with an edge that implied he didn't quite believe her.
He didn't push the issue any further. After applying the last bit of salve, he set the remaining tube aside and stood up without another word.
As he reached the door, he suddenly paused and looked over his shoulder. "If you don't want to make me look bad in front of everyone, then heal up as fast as you can. I don't want to see you limping around like this in two days."
Then he shut the door with a firm click.
Hallie shook her head and sighed. She reached for the salve, brought it close, and gave it a quick sniff. A string of herbal names ran through her mind as she identified several rare ingredients.
Without hesitation, she tucked the remaining tube away into her cabinet, thinking, 'It'd be a waste to use up something so rare without studying it properly. Might as well save it for research.'
She was supposed to have three days off. Now, it had turned into a full-on sick leave.
Given that Scott's birthday party was only two days away, Hallie decided the best thing she could do was rest and recover at home.
After breakfast, she was surprised to find Nelson hadn't left for the office. Instead, he was lounging on the couch, flipping casually through the newspaper. That made her already tedious healing process feel even more unbearable.
After sitting in awkward silence for nearly half an hour, Hallie finally stood up and decided to head back to her room. She thought, 'Even reading a philosophy book would be less stressful than sitting in the same room with him.'
"Nel." An overly sweet voice rang from the entryway.
Hallie paused her tracks and turned her head. Her eyes locked with Regina's.
Regina's instantly widened, her face contorting with disbelief as if she'd just been struck in the head. She swayed slightly, her heels suddenly unstable.
'Is she that doctor? What the hell is she doing here?' Regina wondered in confusion and shock.
She worked hard to find Nelson's current address. She dressed meticulously, applied flawless makeup, and chose the most flattering dress she owned. She was determined to make a lasting impression.
But the moment she saw Hallie standing there in sleepwear, all her fantasies came crashing down. Hatred surged in her chest, flooding her veins like poison.
Regina thought with venom, 'That bitch! Not only did she ignore my warning, but she actually seduced her away into Nelson's house. She's wearing pajamas. She clearly spent the night here. Maybe even more than just one night...
'What kind of spell did she cast on Nel? Nelson never even liked women hanging around. He even brought her home?'
Her thoughts spiraled as the resentment in her eyes grew darker.
Arms crossed over her chest, Hallie met Regina's wild gaze with calm indifference.
"Regina? How did you find this place?" Nelson's voice cut in, slightly stunned. He stood from the couch, furrowing.
"Oh... Peterson told me," Regina stammered. She quickly pulled herself together and softened her voice. "Nel, I never got the chance to properly thank you for taking me to the hospital the other day."
Her eyes shimmered with practiced fragility, her tone syrupy sweet—calculated to pull at his heartstrings.
She glanced toward Hallie and hesitated, her voice rising with a tremble. "Isn't that Dr. Levine? Why is she here? I mean, is something going on between you two?"
Nelson glanced at Hallie, and his expression turned distant. "There's nothing between us."
His glance seemed to be a silent warning to Hallie that she shouldn't have any fantasies toward him.
"It's hot outside. Come in. I'll explain everything to you," he added, already gesturing for Regina to come inside.
Regina nodded, clearly pleased, and grabbed Nelson's jacket sleeve as she nestled beside him on the couch.
The whole scene was stomach-churning. Hallie frowned and quickly looked away, her patience thinning. She turned back toward her room without another word.
Back in her room, she sat down, pulled a medical journal from her shelf, and threw herself into reading—determined to drown out every trace of that ridiculous scene outside.
Before Hallie realized it, it was already midday. Stretching her arms and rolling her sore neck, she slowly made her way downstairs toward the bathroom.
She had just reached the doorway when a shadow lunged out. "You slut, stop right there."
Her face was twisted in rage, and she was barely recognizable. She snarled, "You think you can trap Nel by playing house under the same roof? You're absolutely disgusting. I feel sick just looking at you.
"Nel told me everything. He doesn't love you—he NEVER did. He was forced into this. He never even slept with you, not once. Do you hear me? He loves me, only me. He's been waiting for me all these years."
Hallie stared at Regina's wild expression, not with anger, but with something that resembled pity and mild amusement.
Sliding one hand casually into her pocket, Hallie stood there, completely at ease. Her posture was relaxed, her eyes calm and focused.
She lowered her gaze slightly and said calmly, "If you're so sure about all of that, then why feel the need to come here and scream it on my face? Psychologically speaking, people only resort to this kind of outburst when they're feeling deeply insecure."
"You—" Regina looked like she might explode on the spot.
She seethed. "I warned you before. If you dare come between me and Nelson again, I swear I'll ruin you. Don't think you can cling to Nel just because you've got that old man backing you. You don't deserve Nel at all."
She stepped forward, glaring at Hallie with such intensity that she looked more like something dragged out of a nightmare than a real person.
As a doctor, Hallie couldn't help but wonder, 'Is she really having a psychological episode? Borderline personality disorder maybe?'
Hallie retorted with a sneer, "Whether I deserve him or not isn't really up to you."
She reached out to push Regina aside, intending only to create space between them.
But before she could make contact, Nelson's low voice cut in. His footsteps approached fast and heavy. "What's going on here?"
Before Hallie could even turn her head, Regina suddenly stumbled back and collapsed to the floor in a messy heap. She whimpered dramatically, eyes welling up with tears, "Ow! Dr. Levine, I just wanted to be friends with you. I swear I didn't mean anything bad."
When Nelson arrived, the first thing he saw was Regina on the floor, looking wounded and fragile, while Hallie stood there with her hand still raised in the air.
From a distance, the scene looked damning. Nelson barked, "Hallie, what the hell are you doing?"
The shout snapped Hallie out of her daze.
"Hey, are you alright?" Nelson rushed over to help Regina up, his hand gripping her arm with surprising gentleness.
She seemed to be stunned. She swayed for a few seconds before she clung to Nelson for support.
Nelson glared at Hallie and demanded, "Did Regina upset you or something? Why did you push her?"
Hallie watched the scene unfold, a dry laugh bubbling up in her chest. She asked, pointing at herself in disbelief, "You're seriously asking me why?"
"Nel, don't be angry with Dr. Levine," Regina said tearfully, clutching Nelson's sleeve.
She added, "This is all my fault. I just want to know what kind of woman you like, so I started a conversation with her. I'm the one in the wrong. It's only natural that she sees me as a homewrecker."
