"I'm sorry, Nel... I... I didn't mean to," Regina stammered, biting down hard on her lower lip. Tears spilled freely down her cheeks.
She added, "Dr. Levine is a wonderful woman. She's perfect for you. I'm the one who couldn't let go. I missed my chance. Just ignore me and let me take the punishment for my wrong decision."
Without another word, she turned and walked toward the door, face buried in her hands, as if she couldn't bear to look back.
Nelson rushed forward, grabbing her arm before she could leave. He said urgently, "You didn't miss your chance. I've never looked for anyone else these years.
"Yeah, I hated you for walking away when I needed you most. But deep down, I'm always waiting for you to come back."
Regina froze, stunned by his sudden confession. Slowly, she turned to face him, her eyes wide and brimming with tears. Her voice trembled as she asked, "A-Are you serious?"
"I am," Nelson said without hesitation, his tone firm. "The marriage between Hallie and me only lasts for six months. After that, we'll divorce peacefully. Regina, the only woman I've ever wanted to marry is you."
As he spoke that last sentence, he turned his head and looked directly at Hallie. His gaze was sharp, heavy with warning. The message was loud and clear—this wasn't just for Regina to hear. It was for Hallie, too.
"Oh, Nel." Regina was overcome with emotion. She threw herself into Nelson's arms.
The sudden embrace made Nelson instinctively stiffen. One of his hands started to rise as if to push her away. But seeing the vulnerability on her face, he paused and let his hand fall. He didn't return the embrace, but he didn't reject it either.
Regina nestled her head on his shoulder, sobbing dramatically, her tears soaking into his shirt. But just beyond his line of sight, she wore a smug look as she shot a victorious glance at Hallie.
Her gloating gaze seemed to scream, "See? Nel always belongs to me. You are never anything to him."
Hallie rolled her eyes and shook her head, desperate to leave.
To Regina's surprise, there wasn't a trace of heartbreak on Hallie's face—just thinly veiled contempt.
Regina's fingers clenched tightly as she mused, 'Nel promised to divorce her in six months, but who knows what this bitch might try during this time?
'She could easily seduce him with some dirty game. I have to find a way to get her out of the picture for good.'
Hallie had had enough of the dramatic scene. Turning around, she started walking away.
"Wait." Nelson's voice rang out, cold and commanding. "You really think you can just walk away after pushing Regina?"
Hallie froze in her steps. One hand slipped casually into her pocket as she turned her head slightly, her expression calm but eyes sharp.
She said coolly, "Mr. Blair, I suggest you get your facts straight before making accusations. What proof do you have that I pushed her?"
Nelson gave a dry laugh. He looked her up and down, a mixture of disdain and disbelief in his eyes. "So you're saying I imagined the whole thing? Attacking a patient—this is what you call medical ethics? Is this how all doctors at Mentville Medical Center behave?"
Hallie's expression turned cloudy in an instant. She protested inwardly, 'Say what you want about me, but you have no right to drag my profession into this. And what the hell do other doctors have to do with any of this?'
Her eyes turned dark, laced with restrained fury. "Nelson, you're in no position to judge me. Regina claims she's sick, and you believe her without question. So this is who the great CEO really is—someone who only listens to one side and calls that justice."
Nelson was slightly stunned to hear that. For the first time, he turned toward Regina with a flicker of doubt in his eyes.
Regina blinked her tear-streaked eyes as she looked up at Nelson, her voice trembling. "Nel, y-you're not doubting me, are you?"
"The hospital report will tell us whether you're lying or not," Hallie said with a smirk, her eyes fixed on Regina with open contempt.
On one side stood a woman as calm and indifferent as a cold-blooded machine. On the other was a delicate doll who looked like she might break from the slightest touch.
And in situations where the truth was unclear, people would almost always side with the one who looked more fragile.
Nelson spoke up, his voice demanding, "Hallie, don't waste your breath to stir things up between Regina and me. Bullying her won't make me feel anything for you, not even a shred of sympathy. It only makes me despise you more. You'd do well to remember that."
With that, he turned and gently helped Regina to her feet. "Come on. I'll take you home."
"Okay." Regina sniffled and grabbed Nelson's arm as she gave a docile nod.
Together, the two walked toward the door.
Hallie stood still for a moment, taking in a deep breath to steady herself. She reminded herself, 'Six months. Just hold out for six more months, and all of this will be over.'
Nelson didn't return to the villa for the next two days. Hallie assumed he was likely staying over at Regina's.
Frankly speaking, she was relieved that Nelson was away. If possible, she hoped he'd never come back.
Better yet, maybe Scott would finally learn about Nelson's relationship with Regina and take the initiative to break off their marriage. That would be ideal for Hallie.
Scott's birthday was the next day. The night before, he called Hallie, asking vaguely if she was busy—carefully skirting around the subject of his birthday.
Hallie knew exactly what he was doing. He was giving her an easy out, knowing she had a demanding job. If she said she didn't have time, he'd never press her to attend.
Hallie didn't particularly give a damn to those high-society family gatherings anyway. But then she remembered that Scott's health had been steadily declining over these years. No one knew whether he'd be around to celebrate another birthday.
'At the very least, I should show up for my grandpa's old buddy. It's the least I can do as Nelson's temporary wife,' Hallie thought.
Thus, she took one more day off.
The next morning, dressed neatly, Hallie stood on the side of the road and flagged down a cab to Scott's estate.
"You sure this is the place?" the driver asked, surprise written all over his face. "You work here? Like, as a maid or something?"
Hallie was resting in the back seat with her eyes closed. Hearing his question, she opened her eyes, a puzzled look forming on her face.
But the moment she looked out the window, she understood why the driver asked such questions.
The building complex looming ahead was like something straight out of a magazine, like a palace rather than a residence. It stretched out far beyond two football fields, its full size impossible to see from the gate.
The cheapest car parked outside among them was a Rolls-Royce.
At that moment, men and women dressed in tailored suits and designer gowns were walking through the grand entrance. Even the air seemed laced with the scent of wealth and privilege.
Hallie, meanwhile, wore a simple windbreaker over a casual outfit and white sneakers. Sitting in a cab, she looked completely out of place.
The driver was still eyeing her curiously. Clearing her throat, Hallie shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
'If I told him I'm the granddaughter-in-law of this house's owner, would he even believe me?' she wondered.
But in the end, she just replied, "Yeah, I work here as a maid."
