She added, "Since that's the case, what's the point of prolonging this charade? Besides, my stay here was for show.
"If Scott visits, call me back. This mansion is spacious enough for you to conceal Regina. I'll play my part when needed, but living here is unnecessary."
Nelson's dark eyes swirled with unreadable emotion, his long fingers tightening involuntarily.
For a moment, a heavy silence fell between them.
Regina frowned, ready to interject, but Nelson's lips curved into a faint, ambiguous smile.
He said, "Fine. I'll drive you."
Hallie was taken aback. Nelson rarely offered anything civil. Yet his offer felt less like kindness than relief at her departure.
She gave a perfunctory smile, but somehow, an odd tightness gripped her chest.
"Thanks, but I already called a moving company. They'll be here soon."
Nelson's expression froze, and he dropped the subject.
In the tense atmosphere, Regina opened her mouth to ease the awkwardness, but a voice outside cut in. "Ah, Susan's flowers are thriving."
"Yes, sir. Such beauty—your wife must be smiling in heaven like the flowers, watching you recover. She must be eager for you to tend to her garden again."
At the gate, Scott strolled in with his hands clasped behind his back, his hands behind his back, chatting with an elderly servant.
Scott turned to Hallie, intending to initiate a conversation. But his smile faded instantly at the sight of Regina. "Regina? What are you doing here?"
Regina flinched at his low-voiced reproach, biting her lip and shrinking behind Nelson.
Scott whirled on Nelson with fury in his eyes. "You brought her back? Have you forgotten what she did to you six years ago?"
"Grandpa, it's in the past." Nelson's voice was calm, but his magnetic tone carried a shadow of lingering hurt.
"Regina's parents died because of me. I owe her a lifetime of care no matter what."
"You fool!" Scott thundered, his face purpling with rage.
"Think clearly. Does she really love you? She's feeding off your guilt, your wealth, and your status. If another crisis like six years ago strikes you, how can you guarantee she won't run off with your money again?"
"I won't!" Regina interjected tearfully before Nelson could speak.
"Six years ago, I was gravely ill. I had no choice but to leave to spare Nel the burden..."
"Shut up!" Scott cut her off. His bloodshot eyes bored into her.
As soon as he thought of what happened six years ago, Scott's heart ached, every word landing as an accusation. "Did you ever know the 1.5 million dollars you embezzled was the Blair family's last remaining fund?
"Nelson trusted you enough to entrust you with its safekeeping. But look at what you did!"
"I... I didn't know. I thought it was a gift. I had no idea the Blair family was in crisis. I..." Regina stammered out an explanation, tears streaming down her face as she looked at Nelson with guilty eyes.
Nelson's gaze softened. He pulled Regina behind him, facing Scott. "Grandpa, Regina has depression. Don't push her so hard."
"Depression?" Scott scoffed, as if he'd just heard the most ludicrous joke.
"Even if her parents saved your life, hasn't the Blair family done enough by treating her like a daughter for all these years, protecting her, tolerating her? Are you going to let her hold you hostage forever because of that debt?"
"Grandpa, I'll accept the consequences of my choices." Nelson's tone was calm but always unyielding.
Hallie observed silently, thinking, 'Regardless of Regina's true nature, if Nelson really likes her and is willing to endure this, no one can change his mind.'
"You!"
Scott's chest heaved with rage. His gaze fell on the luggage piled by the door, then on the suitcase in Hallie's hand.
In an instant, his anger surged out of control.
"Nelson! You've gone too far. You bring your mistress here, and now you're kicking out your newlywed wife? The Blair family members have always stood upright. How could I have such a scoundrel grandson like you?"
"Scott..." Hallie interjected awkwardly, "I'm leaving of my own accord. Nelson didn't force me. This has nothing to do with him, and..."
"Even after how he's treated you, you're still defending him?" Scott's fury rendered him deaf to reason.
"Nelson, if you let this woman set foot in my family again, I'll die..."
Scott's words dissolved into violent coughs. His breath rattled like a broken bellows, and his body swayed precariously until the old servant steadied him.
Hallie frowned, dropping her suitcase to rush forward and help Scott to the sofa.
Dumbfounded, Nelson exclaimed, "Grandpa?"
Scott lost consciousness. Though the old servant carried emergency medication, Scott was unable to take it in his condition.
Hallie gently laid him flat on the sofa and gave him a cardiac resuscitation in an attempt to revive him.
"Regina, you should leave," Nelson said, frowning.
"Nel..." Regina's eyes reddened with grievance.
"Grandpa will be furious if he wakes to see you here. Go home and don't come here to see me now." Nelson's focus remained entirely on Scott, his tone involuntarily cold.
The atmosphere stiffened. Unwilling to accept the fact, Regina bit her lip, shooting a secret glare at Hallie, who was absorbed in tending to Scott.
She seethed, thinking, 'Why couldn't this old fool have died earlier? Why did he have to show up at this critical moment?
'I'd planned to sleep with Nelson after driving Hallie out. If I get pregnant, Scott will have to let me marry into the Blair family no matter what.'
