Hallie's fists clenched tightly, her chest aching. Though she tried to suppress it, her eyes reddened uncontrollably.
"Thank you," she said.
Nelson's thin lips twitched, but no words came. He looked away, his eyes swirling with unreadable emotions.
After a moment, he spoke, his voice still magnetic though less frosty than usual. "It's not time to be sentimental here."
"Dr. Levine, Dr. Levine!" An anxious, tearful old voice interrupted them.
Hallie turned to see an elderly man limping toward her, tears streaking his weathered cheeks. His hiking boots were caked in dense clay, suggesting a long journey. A dozen men and women followed behind him, their faces etched with grief.
Rushing forward, Hallie frowned. "What's wrong?"
The old man led the plea. "Dr. Levine, please help me search for my son. He insisted on going into the mountains to gather herbs and never returned.
"You're not just a doctor; you're the lady of the Levine family. The herbs we collect in Berry Bay have always been supplied to your family at the best prices. You can't turn a blind eye now!"
Others chimed in, "My son and daughter-in-law haven't come back from collecting the herbs!"
"My husband is still missing!"
"How long has this been going on?" Hallie asked, worried.
"My son went into the mountains before the earthquake struck. I pleaded with every rescue team, but they said the terrain was too dangerous.
"Some rescuers even got lost or hurt trying, and there just weren't enough people to spare. Now that all these reinforcements have arrived, can you go searching for him now?"
"Dr. Levine, please, save our family."
As Hallie opened her mouth, a colleague pulled her aside, whispering, "Hallie, don't make any promises. The earthquake has drastically altered the terrain, and the conditions up there are already extremely complicated. This is the rescue team's responsibility. Don't do anything reckless."
Hallie was silent for a few seconds before saying, "I'm not just doing this for his son. I know the trails. Don't worry. I'll be careful."
"Hallie, wait!" her colleague called, but Hallie had already turned.
"Don't worry, I'll do everything I can. Please go back for now. We'll let you know the moment we find your family." With that, Hallie turned and headed for the tent where she'd been resting, changing into sturdier clothes.
"Are you going into the mountains?" Nelson stepped into the tent, furrowing. Clearly, he disapproved of Hallie's decision.
"My mother was once the best doctor in Callopston, with extensive research on herbs, including their growth habitats, climatic requirements.
Hallie said while changing her clothes, "Since childhood, she has often brought me here to gather herbs with the villagers. This place is like a second home to me."
Zipping her coat to the collar, she shouldered her backpack and met Nelson's gaze.
"I know the mountain terrain and conditions better than anyone here. There's no one more qualified for this rescue mission."
Nelson narrowed his eyes and studied her for a moment.
Since arriving here, he'd sensed her profound connection to this place.
Then, Nelson said, "Fine. I'm going with you."
Hallie paused at his offer, but he added coolly, "You can barely move a stone. Too frail to save others, but bold enough to try. If Grandfather found out I let you go alone, he'd scold me for disgracing the Blair name again."
She pressed her lips together, silent.
With the increase in manpower, the rescue team had additional personnel available. Upon learning that Hallie intended to go into the mountains for a rescue operation, the team leader dispatched more than a dozen team members to join her.
Material support was provided in a timely manner, including positioning systems and radar equipment.
Once fully prepared, Hallie and Nelson, along with the dozen rescue team members, ventured into the mountains.
While trekking, they called out the names of the missing persons.
As they ventured deeper, the surrounding vegetation grew denser. Tall ancient trees blotted out the sky, while unknown wild animals occasionally rustled through the underbrush.
After nearly an hour of trekking, their voices grew hoarse, yet the search remained fruitless.
Familiar landmarks had crumbled, reshaping the landscape into a terrain unrecognizable from Hallie's memory, creating a discrepancy that threatened to mislead their judgment.
Hallie studied the environment intently, taking care to cross-reference details before daring to determine their direction.
Another hour passed before they reached a cliff face that overlooked a river, its currents roiling with mud and sand.
Through the deafening roar of water, Hallie caught a faint cry for help.
Nelson heard it too. The rescue team members' shouts echoed as they scanned the surroundings.
Finally, their gaze fixed on the river's far bank.
The current raged too violently for safe crossing, yet as Hallie fought to stay afloat against the torrent, Nelson stood firm, his footing unshaken despite the treacherous force.
Noticing she'd fallen behind, he seized her arm and pulled her ahead.
Whether from the river's chill or something else, Hallie felt his grip burn through her wet sleeve, searing her skin.
Though uncomfortable, Hallie didn't dare pull away in the turbulent current.
The moment they reached the opposite bank, she jerked her arm free and strode forward.
Nelson stared at his empty palm, a strange sensation of something inside him crumbling.
Behind a massive tree on the opposite riverbank, they found a man drenched to the skin, his broken leg swollen to a grotesque degree. His face was ashen, and his breath came in shallow gasps.
Hallie knelt to check his weak pulse, then quickly retrieved hemostatic medication, disinfectant, and bandages from her pack.
After brief first aid, two rescue team members carried the man away, while the rest pressed on with the search.
Witnessing the man's dire state, Hallie involuntarily quickened her steps.
She thought, 'If we'd arrived later, that man might have died. What about the others? Could their conditions have worsened?'
"You're not helping anyone by running around like a headless chicken," Nelson observed dryly after they'd spent another 30 minutes searching, noting her persistent unease.
Hallie halted, took a deep breath, and forced herself to calm down.
"Let's take a five-minute break," Nelson turned to tell the team.
It was lunchtime. Hallie took out bread and mineral water from her bag, chewing silently before offering a portion to Nelson.
Nelson frowned, his eyes flicking with distaste. In the end, he only accepted the water.
