Hallie's brows slightly furrowed.
She usually worked late, but most of the time, Nelson got home even later. On a weekday like this, she was surprised to see Nelson come back before 11 PM.
But when Nelson came back was really none of her business anyway.
Above all, Hallie couldn't stand the sight of him right now.
Nelson sat on the sofa reading by himself, not even glancing at Hallie, as if she didn't exist.
Hallie didn't even look at Nelson. She went straight upstairs into her room and put the things in her hands into the closet. Feeling completely drained, she headed for a shower.
After her shower, Hallie could barely keep her eyes open. The warm, soft bed before her seemed like heaven itself.
Suddenly, a sharp knock sounded at the door.
Hallie had just lifted one leg onto the bed when she was startled so badly that her drowsiness instantly vanished.
Hallie figured it was just the maid coming to call her for food. She opened the door, ready to turn her down, only to find Nelson standing outside.
"Just how long do you plan to stay holed up in your room?" Nelson's sharp question cut through the air, his usually stern face dark with displeasure. Clearly, he still hadn't gotten over their argument at Berry Bay.
Hallie glared at Nelson, ready to snap back at him, when she suddenly noticed the maid downstairs was stealing glances upstairs beside a tableful of food.
Hallie's expression froze—she instantly understood that Scott's informant was still keeping constant watch on them.
Nelson had deliberately stressed the words "your room" just now, and in that moment, Hallie caught his drift.
Without a word, Hallie went downstairs and took a seat at the dining table alone, doing her utmost to conceal her emotions.
She had planned to just pick at her food and head back to bed, but the tantalizing aroma from the kitchen completely ruined her resolve—her appetite was instantly awakened.
Hallie noticed today's spread was far more lavish than usual.
The table overflowed with every delicacy imaginable. Even the most lavish royal banquet would pale in comparison.
The centerpiece was a masterfully crafted—intricate arrangement of multicolored vegetables, carved and assembled with such artistry that the vibrant scene instantly lifted Hallie's spirits.
'So food could actually have this kind of effect,' Hallie thought to herself, surprised.
Unfortunately, Hallie's brief relief lasted less than two seconds before her spirits abruptly sank again.
Suddenly, a shadow fell over Hallie. She turned her head, only to find Nelson sitting right beside her, their shoulders pressed together.
Hallie nearly sprang up from her seat on reflex.
"What are you doing?" Hallie whispered, keeping a wary eye on the maid behind her.
Nelson cast her a cool, sidelong glance from the corner of his eye. His slender fingers picked up the fork as he reached for the food.
With a careless flick of his wrist, Nelson dropped a piece of fish into Hallie's plate.
Hallie glanced down and noticed the fish, realizing it had just been put there by him.
Nelson's action was like tossing a bone to a dog—part impatience, part disdain.
Then, in a commanding tone, he uttered just one word, "Eat."
Anger simmered in Hallie's chest as she whipped her head around, fixing Nelson with a death glare.
There was no doubt that Nelson was deliberately provoking her.
As Nelson deliberately placed food on Hallie's plate, he murmured in a voice only the two of them could hear, "A thoughtful husband serving food to his wife who's just returned from duty—do you think Grandpa enjoys watching this show?"
Hallie stared at Nelson, then suddenly smirked. "Honey, how about coming with me to the hospital tomorrow?"
Nelson arched an eyebrow at her.
Hallie's lips parted slightly, her voice dropping a notch. "I'll schedule you for a psych evaluation," she said coldly.
Nelson's expression turned frosty by degrees.
Though his expression remained unpleasant, Hallie had to admit—it was at least more tolerable than the smug grin he'd worn while mocking her earlier.
The two stood off, neither yielding an inch.
The maid, noticing that neither of them had touched their food, grew uneasy. She asked timidly, "Mr. Blair, Mrs. Blair, is the food not to your taste?"
Hallie snapped out of her thoughts and forced a faint smile at the maid behind her.
"Not at all. The presentation is quite artistic—I just wanted to admire it a little longer," she replied.
Without hesitation, Hallie snatched Nelson's empty plate and pulled it in front of herself.
Anticipating he might try to take it back, she quickly grabbed her fork, plucked a piece of meat from the platter, and popped it into her mouth in one swift motion.
'Looks like this woman's audacity is growing as fast as her temper,' Nelson thought.
Nelson narrowed his eyes, a rising urge to flip the table coursing through him.
But if he did that, there was no doubt the maid would snitch on him to Scott tonight.
Tomorrow, he'd be subjected to Scott's relentless barrage of calls all day.
In the end, Nelson had no choice but to use Hallie's own plate.
After dinner, the two entered the room together, an oppressive silence hanging between them.
Hallie glanced at the bed, then resignedly crawled into the makeshift bedding spread out on the floor.
"Still pissed about me taking over Berry Bay?" Suddenly, Nelson snapped, his tone dripping with impatience.
Hallie pulled the covers tightly around herself, turning her back to Nelson and squeezing her eyes shut, determined to shut him out completely.
She said, "Mr. Blair, your methods are truly masterful. As you yourself said, I'm in no position to discuss business with you. Besides, since Mr. Blair is the great benefactor of Berry Bay, who am I to blame you?"
The way she kept calling him "Mr. Blair" was clearly just to get under his skin.
Nelson sneered, "If you're not blaming me, then why are you radiating gloom like some specter? Trying to haunt my dreams tonight?"
Hallie thought bitterly, 'A nightmare would be a blessing.'
Hallie retorted with a mocking smile, "Mr. Blair, haven't you always been above caring what others think? I'm just a mere doctor—how could I possibly shake that unshakable mental fortress of yours?"
'Guess all that sparring with Nelson has really leveled up my sarcasm game,' Hallie mused.
Too bad, Nelson was still one step ahead.
Nelson sneered, "Nobody gives a damn about a pile of shit by the roadside, but everyone still steers clear of the stench, wouldn't they?"
Finally, Hallie couldn't take it anymore. She sat up abruptly and shot Nelson a fierce glare.
"Nelson, you've already gotten everything you wanted. Now you're forbidding anyone from questioning what you've done?" she barked.
Nelson lounged casually against the headboard, watching Hallie with unhurried composure. The icy arch of his brows radiated an arrogance that brooked no challenge.
Nelson's eyes narrowed coldly. "YES."
He added, "Hallie, don't forget whose house you're standing in. Just because Grandpa favors you a bit, you think you can give me a cold shoulder?"
Hallie's expression froze for a split second.
Nelson's eyes were glacial, sending a chill straight to her core.
"Keep your objections to yourself, but remember your place," Nelson said coldly, fixing Hallie with a hard stare. "Piss me off, and you'll regret it. Grandpa may have told me not to touch the Levine family, but..."
Nelson deliberately paused, then closed in on Hallie, step by step. His words hissed out, cold and venomous, like a snake's tongue.
"If I really wanted to do something to the Levine family," he whispered menacingly, "even Grandpa would never know."
