Frowning, Nelson pulled out his phone and called Peterson. The moment the call connected, Nelson went straight to the point and ordered coldly, "Find out where that woman is right now."
On the other end, Peterson was at a bar in the middle of a get-together with his friends. The sudden interruption annoyed him, but there was no way he'd dare piss off this living devil.
He quickly replied, "Don't worry. Hallie took two days off from the hospital and went back to Levine Group for work. She's staying at a hotel near the company for now."
Nelson went silent for a few seconds before asking, "You know all this so clearly. Did she tell you herself?"
"Yeah. We exchanged contacts at Berry Bay the other time, and we chat a bit sometimes." Peterson answered without hesitation.
A moment later, something struck Peterson. "Come on, you've been living with Hallie for ages. Don't tell me you still don't have her phone number?"
Peterson sighed and shook his head as he said half-jokingly, "Seriously, man, if you want to win a woman over, you've got to make the first move. With that cold, arrogant attitude of yours, you're gonna lose her sooner or later."
"You're reading way too much into it," Nelson shot back flatly. "I don't have any feelings for her. But if something happens to her while she's out there, I'll get dragged into it too."
With that, Nelson hung up. He thought, 'She probably took time off just to work on that Berry Bay project proposal at the Levine Group.' Now that he knew where Hallie was, Nelson pushed the matter out of his mind.
Hallie's days off flew by. On the third morning, she was up at 6 AM and headed straight to the hospital, where she had a full schedule of surgeries lined up for the day.
For several days in a row, Hallie didn't get home until nine or ten at night. After a quick shower, she'd pull out her laptop and dive right back into work, updating her proposal with everything she'd uncovered during her recent research.
More often than not, by the time Nelson got home, Hallie was already curled up under the covers with her laptop still in her lap and fast asleep—like she'd completely forgotten their agreement to take turns using the bed.
Nelson would tap her cheek, calling her name coldly, trying to wake her up. But Hallie would just frown in discomfort, roll over, and drift right back to sleep.
At this point, Nelson suspected that even if he stuffed her in a sack and tossed her into a lake, she still wouldn't wake up.
There was no way Nelson was going to share a bed with Hallie. With no other choice, he ended up sleeping on the floor.
Three days later. Nelson was in his office, buried in paperwork, when his assistant, James Tanner, knocked on the door. "There's a young lady in the lobby without an appointment. She says it's urgent and insists on meeting you immediately."
Reporters and paparazzi had tried that angle a thousand times. Hence, without even looking up, he ordered. "Kick her out."
But James didn't move. Instead, he shifted awkwardly and hesitated before blurting out, "Mr. Blair, have you been feeling under the weather lately?"
Nelson looked up and narrowed his eyes with irritation.
James quickly explained, "The girl outside is a well-known doctor from Mentville Medical Center. She looks really anxious, so I thought maybe she's your attending doctor or something."
Nelson froze for a moment. Without looking up from his documents, he ordered curtly, "Let her in."
"Right away, Mr. Blair," James answered quickly, then hurried downstairs without missing a beat.
On the way down, James couldn't stop speculating, 'The second Mr. Blair heard it was a doctor, his whole attitude flipped. That has to mean there's something wrong with his health, and it's so private he won't even tell me, his assistant?
'But if it's serious, why hasn't he gone to the hospital? What kind of illness doesn't interfere with work, yet is so private that he keeps it hidden?'
For some reason, he suddenly found himself thinking of Regina, who'd been dropping by a lot lately to bring Nelson his meals.
Sometimes, when he went in to drop off documents, he'd catch Regina practically throwing herself at Nelson, pushing her chest right up in his face, looking like she was seconds away from climbing into his lap.
James continued to think, 'With the way Regina was throwing herself at him, any regular guy would've caved in ages ago. But the boss? He was steady as a rock and totally unbothered. He never even blushed.
'Isn't Regina his first love? Shouldn't there be some past feelings buried in there somewhere? So why does he always act like she's invisible? Wait a minute, could Mr. Blair be having problems in that area?'
James shook his head, letting out a quiet sigh as he thought, 'Guess no one's perfect after all.'
Meanwhile, Hallie was waiting in the lobby. A few employees walking by instinctively glanced at her, figuring she'd be sent packing any second.
But just a moment later, to everyone's shock, James, Nelson's right-hand man, walked in, bowed politely, and personally led Hallie toward the private elevator going straight up to the top floor.
The staff were stunned because aside from Regina, they had never seen James treat another woman with that much respect.
'Regina's already enough of a headache around here,' they thought. 'Now there's another one? How are we supposed to get any work done like this?'
"Man, I swear. Mr. Blair used to be a total ice block, and now he's flipping through women like pages in a magazine. What's up with that?"
"Right? And don't even get me started on Regina. The moment Mr. Blair isn't around, she struts around here like she owns the place, ordering us around, acting like she's already the future Mrs. Blair. She's unbearable!"
"Ugh, who knows what kind of drama this new woman's gonna stir up. It's already hard enough just working here!"
When the elevator doors slid open, James stepped aside and gestured politely. "Mr. Blair is inside his office, Dr. Levine. You'll see him right away."
Hallie smiled politely. "Thank you."
The entire floor was occupied by Nelson alone, with just a sofa and a lounge adjacent to his office—its style identical to his bedroom.
Everything was spotless and perfectly arranged, but it felt cold, with no hint that a real person actually lived or worked here.
The glass door to his office was open. Hallie stepped inside and immediately saw Nelson buried in his paperwork, completely absorbed. It seemed like he was someone who didn't appreciate being disturbed during work.
Pressed for time, Hallie didn't bother worrying whether Nelson wanted to be interrupted or not. She marched right up to his desk and slapped the Berry Bay project proposal in front of him. "I've finished the proposal. Does your promise to advance me that 150 thousand dollars still stand?"
Nelson finished reading the document in his hands before finally looking up at her. Then, he reached for her proposal. "Let's see if this plan is really worth 150 thousand dollars."
Nelson began flipping the pages one by one at a deliberately slow pace, while Hallie anxiously studied his expression.
But Nelson was a master at hiding his emotions, especially in business. He had long trained himself never to let anyone read his thoughts. His expression stayed flat and indifferent as if he wasn't interested in the slightest.
Only the slightest flicker in his eyes—so quick it was almost imperceptible—hinted at anything deeper.
The truth was, Nelson had already decided to return Berry Bay to her. The proposal was just supposed to be a formality.
