I rubbed the sleep from my eyes and squinted at the caller ID.
Mom.
I wasn't going to pick up.
But Adrian - that bastard - reached over and hit answer before I could stop him. All I could do was shoot him a death glare as Mom's voice crackled through the speaker.
"Chloe? Are you finished yet? Lily and I are waiting outside in this downpour."
A glance at the clock shocked me - class had ended without me even noticing. Just as I opened my mouth to respond, Adrian smoothly cut in.
"Mrs. Anderson, we'll need an extra twenty minutes today if that's alright?"
Of course Mom agreed immediately. My academic performance always trumped everything else in her book.
The second the call ended, Adrian moved like a man possessed. He dragged me back into that intoxicating whirlwind where rational thought disappeared. Twenty minutes barely took the edge off his hunger - nowhere near enough to satisfy him.
When time ran out, he "helped" me dress by trapping me against the piano bench in one last lingering embrace. Only Mom's arrival forced him to finally release me.
The jerk had the nerve to hand me a glass of water as I left, smirking, "You worked up quite a sweat today."
I flipped him off and stormed out to find Mom waiting. That's when I noticed Lily staring at Adrian through the doorway. Without thinking, I stepped between them, blocking her view.
The car ride home was Mom's usual lecture marathon about the Art College Entrance Exam, now with bonus comparisons to Lily.
"Look how naturally talented Lily is. If not for her grades, transferring schools would've been impossible."
I side-eyed Lily's outfit - clearly Mom's conservative handiwork. No self-respecting teenager would wear that frumpy mess voluntarily. Leaning close, I whispered, "Next time she tries to dress you like a church grandma, just say no."
Lily's warm laughter filled the car.
Before I knew it, Final Assessment day arrived. Mom turned into a military general - micromanaging everything from my breakfast to the route to the exam hall.
Personally, I wasn't worried. Adrian's unconventional teaching methods actually worked. I'd improved more than I'd ever imagined possible.
But just as I entered the exam building, my phone buzzed with Lily's name.
"Chloe, help! Mr. Lowell, he's - AH!"
Ice flooded my veins.
"Lily? Where are you?!"
The line erupted with chaotic piano notes - the sound of someone being forced against the keys. Then silence.
Adrian's predatory behavior when we first met flashed through my mind. That bastard was making his move on Lily while I was gone.
I checked the clock. Fifty minutes until exam time. The studio was close - if I ran, I could rescue Lily and make it back.
Without hesitation, I grabbed my bag and took off at a dead sprint. Every second counted.
