The door hung slightly open, a sliver of light spilling into the hallway.
I froze outside, my breath catching as Lily's muffled sobs and Adrian's ragged panting reached my ears.
Gritting my teeth, I drew in a sharp breath—then kicked the door in with everything I had.
The scene inside hit me like a punch to the gut.
Lily was curled in the corner, shaking like a leaf, her back pressed against the wall as if she could melt into it.
Adrian loomed over her, his face flushed, his expression twisted into something feral—like a predator cornering its prey.
A half-empty milk carton sat abandoned on the table.
My stomach knotted, but I forced myself forward, stepping into the room.
The second Lily spotted me, she burst into tears.
Seeing her like that—terrified, disheveled—sent white-hot rage surging through me.
I lunged between them, throwing my arms out to block Adrian from her.
"Adrian, you sick bastard! What the hell did you do to her?"
He jerked back, shaking his head violently, his face darkening.
Then—before I could react—Lily darted out from behind me and bolted for the door.
"Chloe, I'll get help!"
She was gone before I could even blink.
I wanted to chase her—but Adrian suddenly collapsed against me.
The impact nearly sent us both crashing to the floor.
I barely managed to steady him—and then I realized.
His skin was burning up.
Red, angry splotches were spreading across his arms, his neck.
My blood ran cold.
He was barely conscious, his breath coming in ragged gasps.
"Damn it…" he gritted out, his voice strained. "We've been set up."
His knees buckled, and I tightened my grip.
"She drugged me. Woke up like this…"
His glare flicked to the milk carton.
"Bet she spiked that with something—forced it down my throat while I was out."
My stomach dropped.
Lily didn't know—Adrian was deathly allergic to milk.
The aphrodisiac might've been her goal, but the milk? That was a death sentence.
And now he was fighting for air, his body shutting down.
Lily could've run anytime.
But she waited.
Waited until I got here—until I was trapped in a room with a drugged, half-conscious Adrian.
What the hell was her game?
I didn't have time to figure it out.
Allergic reactions this bad? They could kill him.
I hooked an arm under his shoulders, fumbling for my phone with my free hand—
Then the door exploded open with a deafening crash.
