Knock, knock, knock—
The sudden pounding at the door was so heavy it made Mr. Roland freeze, his hand hovering over me, motionless.
Mom went to answer it.
"What the hell's wrong with your bathroom? Water's leaking into my apartment in the middle of the damn night!"
Mom had just stepped out of the shower, her hair still damp at the ends.
It had to be from her bath.
"I'm so sorry—really, I apologize."
The woman from downstairs—an older lady who'd always looked down on Mom, probably knowing what she did for a living—stood there, arms crossed, scowling.
Mom tried to smooth things over, but the woman only left after hurling a few more curses our way.
I felt Mr. Roland exhale, tension draining from him. He didn't move again, just waited in silence before finally slipping out of the room.
The soft click of the door closing finally let my heart settle.
If something had happened between us tonight, part of me would've been happy—but how the hell was I supposed to face him at school after that?
Lost in thought, I drifted into a deep sleep.
The next morning, I walked out of my room like nothing had happened.
Mr. Roland was already gone. Mom stood in the kitchen, scrambling eggs.
"Mom… how'd you meet that guy last night?"
She never paid much attention to my school life—didn't even know my teachers. And I never asked about her… clients.
But I knew what she did wasn't exactly legal. And Mr. Roland? He'd always been untouchable in my eyes. I never imagined he'd stoop this low.
"Why?" Her sharp glance nearly made me flinch. I scrambled for an excuse.
"Just curious."
The way her shoulders tensed told me to drop it.
Everything she did was to give me a better life.
This work was humiliating enough—I shouldn't have brought it up.
My eyes burned as we ate in silence.
"A friend introduced us."
I was already by the door, slipping on my shoes, backpack slung over my shoulder, when Mom suddenly spoke.
I nodded and left.
So… Mr. Roland had always been like this.
With a heavy, uneasy feeling in my chest, I headed to Lincoln High.
Our school was the best in the city. I'd gotten in by sheer luck during the entrance exams, barely scraping by the cutoff score.
But my foundation was weak. My grades hovered at the bottom, and pulling them up felt impossible.
Mom never pressured me, but my homeroom teacher—desperate to boost graduation rates—kept dragging me into the office for extra tutoring.
She even roped in other teachers to help after class.
Math was my worst subject. I barely scraped thirty on tests. So, Mr. Roland was assigned as my primary tutor—the one who spent the most time with me.
We had math tutoring every night during the last study hall. And Saturday afternoons.
After last night… I had no idea how to face him.
