That night, I clicked "order" on a wig and dress before I could second-guess myself. Delivery in two days - just enough time for my nerves to fray.
Next morning over greasy diner pancakes, Liam slid into the booth across from me. I'd spent all night puzzling over how he'd found that dark corner of the internet - and why he'd risk helping me.
"My sister was like you," he said abruptly, stabbing his fork into syrup. "Just not as lucky."
The confession hit me like a sucker punch. Between bites of cold toast, Liam unraveled his story: His sister had worked at the boba shop before me. After Ryan's abuse, she'd shattered completely - now permanently institutionalized. He'd been waiting years to nail Ryan. That day in the alley? His clumsy attempt to warn me.
"Don't sweat it," Liam said, pushing his plate away. "We're gonna bury that bastard."
For three agonizing days, I paced my apartment waiting for deliveries. When everything arrived, I transformed in my bathroom mirror - the chestnut wig softening my features, the sundress making me look like some innocent coed. A stranger stared back at me.
At the shop, Liam played his part perfectly. "Boss, meet my cousin," he said, nudging me forward. "Just graduated, needs summer work."
Ryan's eyes crawled over me like ants at a picnic. I watched the moment he decided I was fresh meat - his grin turning predatory. "College girl! Sweet, sweet."
He offered $5k/month like it was some grand prize. I bit my tongue so hard I tasted copper. Instead, I giggled like an idiot. "That's amazing! Thank you, boss!"
Day three, Ryan made his move. "New boba shipment," he announced, flipping the OPEN sign to CLOSED. "Need your... expert opinion."
I followed him to the break room, clutching my bag like a lifeline. When the door clicked shut, he didn't even bother with pretense - hands grabbing at my dress before the lock finished turning.
"Stop fighting!" he growled as fabric tore.
That's when I kneed him square in the family jewels. His scream was music. I rained down blows like vengeance - each punch for every girl he'd broken.
"Recognize me now, you piece of shit?" I spat as he curled on the floor.
The cops arrived to find Ryan whimpering, my pinhole camera footage already queued up. As they cuffed him, he screamed threats that would've scared me months ago. Now? I just laughed.
At the station, Liam watched them haul Ryan away. "You saved them," he said quietly.
"Them?"
"The others," he murmured. "The ones before you who disappeared. Who broke. My sister..." His voice cracked.
My hands shook with fury. Dozens of lives ruined. But not anymore.
As September rolled around, I walked onto campus lighter - knowing somewhere, Ryan was learning what real captivity felt like.
