Liane, there's something I forgot to tell you. Frank really isn't your biological son.
The moment I read those words, the heavy stone lodged in my chest shattered loose and plummeted, crushing the air from my lungs.
I froze. The world around me dissolved into silence—like I'd been abandoned in an empty void.
Frank sneered, mistaking my shock for defeat.
"Finally get it through your thick skull, slut? If you've come to your senses, move. My dad's waiting for his damn laundry."
His words barely registered. My mind reeled, trapped in the whirlwind of Erin's message.
But no—jumping to conclusions over one text would be reckless. I needed proof. A paternity test.
As Frank turned to leave, I lunged, grabbing his arm. He stumbled, crashing onto the stairs before scrambling up, eyes blazing.
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
Gritting my teeth, I hissed, "You're not going anywhere. We're heading to the hospital—now."
"Are you out of your mind?" Frank's face twisted in disgust. Then—crack!—his palm struck my cheek with a force that sent my head snapping sideways.
My breath hitched. Sixteen years. Sixteen years of raising him, loving him, and this was my reward? A slap from the boy I'd called my son?
Hot tears welled as fury surged through me. Before I could think, my hand flew—smack!—returning the blow with equal force.
"You—you hit me?" Frank clutched his face, stunned. In his world, I was the doormat—the meek wife who never fought back, not even when Victor belittled me.
"Even a damn dog knows loyalty!" I spat, voice trembling. "All these years... wasted on you!"
"A dog?" His nostrils flared, but before he could retaliate, his gaze darted past me, lighting up like a kid spotting Santa. "Dad! Erin! Thank God—this crazy bitch just attacked me!"
Victor strolled in, Erin tucked under his arm like a trophy, both grinning like they'd won the lottery. But at Frank's cry, Victor's face darkened.
"Liane," he snarled, storming toward me, "you worthless piece of—" Wham! His slap split my lip.
Up close, the evidence was undeniable: fresh love bites peppered his collarbone.
The betrayal cut deeper than the sting on my face ever could.
