Shane walked through the front door and immediately heard the baby's happy giggling.
Gina bounced over with the kid. "Max stops crying the second daddy comes home!" She went to grab his arm but wrinkled her nose at the incense smell on his jacket. "You went to the funeral?"
Shane automatically pulled away, this weird anxiety starting to eat at him.
His phone suddenly buzzed.
"Mr. Vellmore! We couldn't find Miss Sinclair, she..."
A massive crash exploded through the speaker, followed by screaming and the horrible sound of metal crunching.
Shane jumped up, but then the baby in Gina's arms started shrieking.
"Shane!" Gina grabbed at him, panicking. "Where are you going? You're scaring him..."
Shane shook her off and ran out.
Shane stood in the middle of the funeral, clutching that blood-soaked photo, his hands trembling.
Rowena... had known the whole time?
Known about him throwing that party for Gina and the baby in New York, known the real deal behind every "business trip," known about all his...lies and cheating.
His brain just shut down, ears ringing like he'd been hit by a truck.
So all that quiet acceptance, putting up with his shit—was that because she'd already written him off?
This panic he'd never felt before started clawing up from his gut. Shane whipped around and yelled at his assistant Jasper"Dig into this! When did she find out?!"
Jasper took off running, and Shane just stood there feeling like he was drowning.
Before his guy could report back, the autopsy results showed up.
The medical examiner's conclusion was crystal clear.
Ambrose had been dealing with heart problems for months. He died not long after Rowena left his study.
Given how long the tampered medication would've taken to work, Rowena couldn't possibly have done it.
The pill bottle was buried under the flower bed out back, and it only had Ambrose's fingerprints and his nurse's on it.
Shane stared at the report, his fist crushing the paper without him even realizing it.
He'd screwed Rowena over completely.
He'd personally thrown her in jail, let those animals torture her, even made her slam her head on the floor until she was bleeding everywhere...
And she'd been innocent the whole time.
Jasper's investigation came back fast. Shane opened the email and his blood went cold—
Rowena had figured everything out the day of that damn party.
The email had a photo attached—Rowena standing outside that hall, watching through the crack in the door as he and Gina held the baby while people congratulated them.
Her eyes looked hollow and hopeless.
Shane slammed the laptop shut, his chest tight as hell.
She'd actually seen it with her own eyes.
Seen his betrayal, his lies, all his bullshit.
Shane hired a private investigator.
He'd originally thought Rowena had run because she'd killed grandpa, but what the PI dug up made his blood turn to ice.
They'd recovered the missing security footage from the study.
In the video, before Rowena entered the study, some unfamiliar maid had snuck in and skillfully found the pill bottle, switching out the medication.
Shane immediately had that maid detained.
Less than an hour after the cops took her in, she'd confessed everything.
"Miss Vell told me to switch the pills... She said Mr.Ambrose was blocking her from being with Mr. Vellmore, and once he was dead, she could become Mrs. Vellmore..."
Shane sat outside the interrogation room, white as a sheet.
The PI sent him more than just surveillance footage and confessions.
More... horrifying evidence.
Video the staff had taken of Gina hiding needles in the baby's clothes herself.
Security footage of her deliberately smashing the ring.
Online purchase records for that horror sound speaker.
Bank transfers showing she'd bribed the chef to put mushrooms in Rowena's food.
One thing after another, like sharp knives stabbing straight into Shane's heart.
His hands shaking, he clicked on the last video.
In the footage, Gina was holding the baby with this cold smile"Don't worry, sweetheart, mommy's just gonna poke you a tiny bit with this needle... When you cry, daddy's gonna hate that bitch even more..."
Shane shot to his feet and punched the wall, his knuckles immediately streaming blood.
What the fuck had he done?!
In the empty house, Shane sat alone in the room Rowena used to live in.
The sheets still had faint bloodstains—from when they'd tortured her on that nail board.
He remembered the pain in her eyes when she was kneeling on those nails, her desperate silence while kowtowing at the funeral, her broken figure when they dragged her off to jail...
She could've explained.
But she didn't say anything.
Because she knew he wouldn't believe her.
Shane covered his face, his shoulders shaking slightly.
His arrogant lies, Gina's sick games, Rowena's silent suffering...
All of it felt like slaps across his face, again and again.
