The Michelin French cuisine was authentic.
The river view from the 88th floor was stunning.
But watching Sebastian across from her—restless and constantly checking his phone—Aveline felt like she was chewing cardboard.
She knew he was waiting for Serena's safety text.
After all, they were husband and wife.
When the special ringtone finally rang, Sebastian answered eagerly.
This man who was usually so composed was so anxious he accidentally hit speakerphone.
Serena's desperate, trembling voice came through: "I've been kidnapped. I don't know where they're taking me, but maybe this is for the best. Since Miss Hart doesn't like me, my disappearance will make you both happy... Ah!"
The call ended. Sebastian tried calling back, but it wouldn't go through.
He barely contained his panic, asking in a forced calm tone: "Babe, where did you have that woman taken? If you wanted revenge, you should have let me handle it. No need to dirty your own hands."
"I'm saying this one more time." Aveline put down her fork. "It wasn't me."
The next second, her wrist was gripped painfully tight.
"Serena has depression—she can't handle this kind of trauma!"
Sebastian was frantic, his voice turning cold.
"Babe, stop this, okay? You lost a hand, but she's lost a lot too. Stop holding grudges and just let her go, will you?"
Aveline was stunned, then her eyes slowly reddened.
Serena had lost a lot?
She'd attacked someone and had someone to cover for her—didn't even have to go to prison.
She liked someone and got to marry him.
She'd been kept and pampered for three years, and now she was free.
Who was really pitiful here? Who wasn't letting go of whom?
Aveline held back her tears and spoke word by word: "I said I didn't do it. And—"
"Even if this hand is fake, I can still feel pain."
Only then did Sebastian notice her wrist had turned bright red.
He quickly let go, softening his tone: "Sorry, babe. I was just worried you might do something rash. By the way, where's the matching ring I gave you? Why aren't you wearing it?"
Aveline found it laughable. He kept saying he wanted to monitor her every move, but he still didn't know he'd given her the wrong ring.
"You gave me the men's ring. It doesn't fit, so I put it away."
Sebastian paused, then said gently: "We'll switch them back as soon as we get home."
After that, he didn't mention Serena at all, as if she really was some irrelevant person.
Until three nights later, when Sebastian got a phone call and immediately headed for the door.
His hand was already on the handle when he seemed to sense something and turned back to look at Aveline. He froze.
Her gaze was so calm. She showed no confusion about his midnight departure, no reluctance to see him go. It was like she didn't care about him at all.
Panic fluttered in his chest. He instinctively wanted to stay, but his phone rang again.
This time he couldn't think about anything else. He hastily said "work emergency" and strode out.
Sebastian didn't come home all night, only sending one text.
**Sebastian: Babe, working late tonight, won't be home. Get some sleep. Love you.**
Aveline coldly turned off her screen.
Those fake words "love you" disappeared into the darkness with it.
The next morning, a servant said someone was looking for Aveline.
She'd just stepped out of the villa when something struck the back of her head. She lost consciousness.
When she woke up, Aveline found herself tied up in a nightclub's private room.
Her mouth was sealed with tape, she was wearing a mask and a dress.
Just like Serena's server outfit that day.
And her waist-length hair that Sebastian loved so much had been hacked off unevenly, barely reaching her ears.
The door suddenly opened. Sebastian's deep voice rang out.
"Wife, is this the madam who kept you in the nightclub and tortured you for three days?"
Serena cried with grievance and fear: "That's her. She said Miss Hart ordered her to make me wish I was dead. Besides torturing me in every way, she brought in many men to assault me. Thank God I fought them off..."
Sebastian's voice grew colder by degrees: "Aveline definitely went too far. I can't bear to punish her, but I can make an example of others."
"Bring me the salt-covered whip."
Aveline's whole body trembled. She understood now—Serena had not only framed her, but wanted Sebastian to mistake her for the madam and torture her with his own hands!
