Watching him fuss over Karina's every scrape, Edmund's frustration brought tears to his eyes. Meanwhile, the color drained from my face by the second.
"Mrs. Felicia, step aside please."
As the maid moved to relight the candle, Darrel's mother roughly pulled me away. "Use your eyes, Giselle! You're in everyone's way. If you ruin my grandson's special moment, you'll answer to me!"
Darrel remained silent. Left with no choice, I quietly wheeled myself away. The timing couldn't have been more perfect - just as I left, Darrel's text came through.
Darrel: [I don't blame you for today. I get that you don't like Karina - she's Edmund's birth mother after all. But you need to grow up and learn to coexist. We'll make it up to you later.]
After reading, my decision was final. I hurled my phone straight out the window.
As the ancestral ceremony was about to begin, with all the Roderick elders present, Darrel scanned the room for me. "Someone fetch my wife immediately," he ordered.
When I failed to appear, his mother snapped, "That impossible girl! Did she storm off over a few harsh words?"
Karina put on her best worried face. "Oh dear, Mrs. Giselle couldn't be upset with me, could she? This is all my fault - I shouldn't have tried talking to her."
Sebastian Roderick's cane struck the floor sharply. "Giselle's behavior is unacceptable! Since Karina is Edmund's real mother, perhaps she should stand in!"
All eyes turned to Darrel, who responded firmly, "Giselle is Edmund's legal mother. Her absence would be improper." Turning to a maid, he commanded, "Bring my wife here now!"
After multiple relightings of ceremonial candles, a flustered assistant arrived. "Mr. Darrel, about Mrs. Giselle..."
Seeing the hesitation, Darrel sighed. "She's having one of her moods post-surgery. Please excuse her, elders." To his assistant he growled, "Get her here immediately. I don't care what it takes!"
As he turned to light incense at the altar, the assistant's panicked cry cut through the hall: "Mrs. Giselle fell off the cliff!"
The incense stick shattered in Darrel's grip. He whirled around, grabbing the assistant by his collar, eyes wild with fury. "What did you say? She can't even walk properly! Were you all just standing around like statues?"
