"Surely a biological mother wouldn't do something like that," Dominick murmured. He could understand the Sullivan parents' favoritism toward Brittany, but he couldn't believe they would abandon their own child.
Compared to Paisley, Brittany had spent much more time with the Sullivan family. But Paisley was their biological daughter. How could her biological mother have deliberately abandoned her?
A mother who could treat an adopted daughter as her own wouldn't possibly throw away her biological daughter.
Dominick had listened to Gregory's explanation yesterday. He believed there must have been some misunderstanding between Paisley and her biological parents—a lack of communication. It reminded him of the way things had been between him and Paisley back then.
But after learning from his past mistakes, he didn't dare act rashly and upset Paisley again. That was why he came to ask Emery for advice.
"What do you know?" Emery said firmly, her hatred for the Sullivan family no less than her disdain for Dominick. "Do you know what Paisley's so-called mother said to her?"
Emery glared at Dominick. "She said, 'Why did you come back? Why didn't you just die out there?' Tell me, is that something a mother should say to her child?"
Emery's words reminded Dominick of what had happened yesterday at the hotel, when Christina had thrown a large bowl at Paisley without hesitation. If he hadn't stepped in, the plate would have hit Paisley.
Just then, Emery's phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID—it was Paisley.
"Hold on. Let me take this," Emery said, covering the phone so Dominick couldn't see who was calling. She walked briskly into her office.
"Hey, sweetheart, let's have lunch together," Paisley said as soon as Emery answered.
After what had happened yesterday, Paisley had received a call early this morning from Gary, asking her to come to the set to discuss what to do next.
Brittany was definitely getting replaced. But since her casting had already been announced publicly, finding a new actress willing to step in at this stage was proving to be a challenge.
The once smoothly running production had been completely disrupted by Brittany, and now everything had to start over. Feeling upset, Paisley thought a lunch with Emery might help her decompress.
But something about Emery's voice seemed off. She didn't respond right away, and Paisley could hear her running before she finally answered, "Honey, let me tell you—"
Before Emery could finish, Christina's hysterical voice rang out, loud enough to fill Paisley's ears.
"Why is it so noisy? Is someone arguing?" Emery asked over the phone, clearly irritated by the noise.
"Yeah, I'll talk to you later," Paisley replied, casually placing her phone on the table, assuming Emery would hang up. She didn't bother checking. Just as she was about to go see what was happening, Christina and Brittany appeared in front of her.
"Paisley, did you instruct these people to block Brittany? She's the lead actress in this production!" Christina's voice was sharp and grating, her face full of hostility.
Brittany's face was pale with anger. As the lead actress, she'd never been stopped anywhere on set before, but just now someone had dared to block her.
"Paisley, no matter what, I'm still the lead actress in this production. I signed a contract!" Brittany declared indignantly.
Facing these two, Paisley remained calm. She looked at Brittany and said, "The production team has already contacted legal counsel. You'll receive a contract termination notice soon."
"This is a breach of contract!" Brittany protested angrily. She had worked so hard to secure the lead role.
"Didn't you read the contract when you signed it? There are a few exemption clauses, and they apply perfectly to you. But even if they didn't, and we had to pay the breach penalty, I'd cover the cost myself."
"You—" Brittany's voice broke as tears streamed down her face. She raised her voice even higher. "Why are you always against me?"
"Because I can't stand you," Paisley replied bluntly, making no effort to hide her disdain.
"Paisley!" Christina couldn't bear to see Brittany upset. She glared at Paisley, about to launch into a tirade, but then her calculating eyes flickered with an idea.
"Fine. Brittany can step away from this role," Christina said.
"Mom!" Brittany protested.
Christina patted her hand, signaling her to stay quiet. Turning back to Paisley, she said, "But here's the deal: since you and Dominick are divorced, instead of letting other women benefit, why not help Brittany and him get together?
"She's your sister, after all, and would technically be Grayson's aunt. If she marries Dominick, you won't have to worry about your son being mistreated by a stepmother."
At that moment, Dominick overheard everything through Emery's phone on speaker. He frowned deeply.
Meanwhile, back on set, Paisley felt like she had just heard the most absurd joke of her life. She tilted her head and let out a derisive laugh. "What are you saying? I don't understand a word of it."
Christina's eyes widened, her gold earrings trembling with her fury. "Don't play dumb with me! What, do you still want to get back together with Dominick? Are you that desperate to steal your sister's chance at marriage?"
Paisley felt it was impossible to communicate with Christina. How could she be her mother? "First, Dominick and I are divorced. Whether he remarries or not has nothing to do with me.
"Second, if Brittany wants to marry Dominick, she can try seducing him herself. Leave me out of it."
Dominick's face grew even darker at Paisley's words, but Emery was quietly amused, hiding her laughter behind her hand.
However, Christina wasn't convinced. She thought Paisley's words were just excuses. "Paisley, how can you be so selfish? I regret it now—back when you were born, I should have killed you while I had the chance!"
Though Paisley had heard similar words from Christina many times before, this time it hit differently. Christina's expression was filled with a hatred so strong it seemed she wanted to tear Paisley apart. It felt like a stab to the heart.
Her biological mother had once considered killing her as a newborn. Her hands trembled uncontrollably at her sides.
She used to think that her parents' lack of love stemmed from her disappearance at age three.
For over a decade, Brittany had filled the void left by Paisley's absence, and her parents had poured all their love into Brittany. That's why they favored Brittany so much.
It turned out the truth was not what Paisley had thought all along. From the moment she was born, she had been unloved by her mother, who even once tried to strangle her. This shocking revelation shattered Paisley's worldview.
"Get out," she muttered under her breath, trembling uncontrollably.
"What did you just say?" Christina didn't catch her words and responded sharply.
"I said get out! Stay away from me! Leave!" Paisley snapped, completely losing control as she grabbed whatever was within reach and hurled it at Christina and Brittany.
"You ungrateful girl, you dare treat me like this?" Christina shouted, dodging while still cursing Paisley.
"Ah! Mom, she's gone mad!" Brittany screamed as Paisley's phone hit her, causing her to cry out in pain.
Christina quickly shielded Brittany, yelling, "Paisley, you better die out there somewhere! Don't ever think about stepping back into the Sullivan family's house!"
It wasn't until Gary called security that Christina and Brittany were finally dragged away. Even as they were being pushed out, Christina's curses could still be faintly heard in the distance.
"Ms. Vaire, are you okay?" Gary asked, deeply concerned but unsure how to comfort Paisley. Instead, he quietly began picking up the items Paisley had thrown.
"Your phone's broken," Gary said as he picked up her now shattered and blacked-out phone. He cautiously handed it to her.
Paisley lowered her head, taking a moment to steady her breathing.
After a few seconds, she regained her composure, took the broken phone from Gary's hand, and muttered, "Sorry, I-I can't keep working right now. I need—" She trailed off, unsure of what she even wanted to do.
Gary nodded quickly. "Of course, no problem. Go get some rest."
Forcing a faint smile, Paisley grabbed her bag and left.
