Seeing Serena exhausted to the point of not being able to keep her eyes open, Maria could only let her sleep. Worried she might catch a chill, she borrowed a blanket from the medical staff and wrapped Serena up. "Then go ahead and sleep."
Serena closed her eyes but still thought of Paisley. "I'll sleep for a while. Wake me up when Mommy comes."
"Okay, I'll wake you up. Sleep now." Maria let Serena rest her head on her lap, gently rocking her body as she softly patted her back.
Looking at Serena in her arms, even though she was asleep, Maria noticed how Serena would still twitch slightly, her little brows furrowing, making Maria's heart ache with an indescribable tenderness.
Today, Serena got scared, and to make matters worse, they ran into the Vanderbilt family. What bad luck.
Maria was really hoping Paisley would arrive soon, so they wouldn't have to wait for the hospital checkup. They could just have Paisley check on Serena, and if everything was fine, they could go home.
With that thought, Maria calmed down and stopped worrying, paying no more attention to the Vanderbilt family.
At that moment, Grayson slowly woke up. The first person he saw was Lauren. "Grandma."
Hearing her grandson's voice, Lauren was overcome with joy. "Sonny, you're finally awake! You scared me to death!"
"Grandma, it hurts so much," Grayson said, his eyes welling up. Every part of his body seemed to hurt, and it felt like he couldn't take it anymore.
"Sweetheart, don't move. The doctor just finished bandaging your wounds," Lauren said, feeling heartbroken. She wished she could take the pain for him.
Dominick stood by Grayson's bed, watching his son's weak state, feeling just as heartbroken. "Sonny, tell Dad, aside from the pain from the wounds, do you feel anything else? Dizziness? Nausea?"
Since Grayson had a green bracelet on, he had only received basic treatment for the surface wounds from an intern doctor so far, and hadn't yet been examined more thoroughly.
Grayson was in so much pain from all his injuries that he couldn't focus on what Dominick was saying. "I don't know, I don't know, Dad, it hurts so much, I think I'm going to die from the pain."
Dominick frowned, feeling a mix of heartache and concern, but he still managed to keep his composure. But Lauren couldn't stay composed. Hearing her beloved grandson cry out in pain made her feel like she was being torn apart.
She quickly walked to the intern doctor, who had been tending to other patients' wounds, and asked, "My grandson says he's going to die from the pain. What should we do now?"
"It's normal for a child with that many wounds to feel pain," the intern doctor replied.
But Lauren wasn't hearing it. She felt that this was the hospital's negligence. "You go check on him right now."
The intern doctor was helpless. He didn't have the authority to diagnose patients on his own and could only do basic bandaging.
Lauren's actions were beginning to upset the parents of other children.
"Hasn't your grandson's wounds been treated already? What's the deal? Just because he's your precious grandson, does that mean he's above everyone else?"
"You—" Lauren clenched her teeth, about to say something more.
Seeing the situation, Reginald quickly instructed his assistant to pull people away.
"What are you pulling me for!" Lauren struggled out of their grasp and glared at Reginald. "Didn't you hear Sonny say he's in pain?"
Of course, Reginald had heard it. This was his only grandson, and he felt just as heartbroken. But this was a hospital, crowded with people, and so many eyes watching.
If they overreacted, word would spread quickly, and that would be bad for the Vanderbilt family, as well as for the Vanderbilt Group.
After all, the power of public opinion was enormous these days. If news spread that the Vanderbilt family was using their power to suppress others, it would certainly cause an uproar and negatively impact the group.
"You need to calm down. I'll call Jonathan." However, when Reginald tried calling, Jonathan's line was busy. It made sense. With such an emergency happening at the hospital, Jonathan would be busy handling the situation.
"Let's wait a bit longer. If it's really bad, we can transfer Sonny to another hospital."
Lauren felt helpless and could only stand by Grayson's bed, crying uncontrollably. "My poor Sonny, he's never been through anything like this."
Kayla thought her mom was going a bit overboard, but she couldn't say anything because she knew she'd get scolded. So, she just quietly stood by, offering comfort every now and then.
The more Lauren fretted over Grayson, the louder his cries grew, as though he had been wronged terribly.
Finally, Dominick couldn't take it anymore. He coldly reminded Lauren, "Stop crying. You're embarrassing yourself."
Lauren froze at the coldness in her son's voice and stared at him in shock. Dominick didn't pay her any attention and instead turned to Grayson. "Grayson, you're a big boy. Stop crying. Be brave."
Grayson, already hurt and now being scolded by his dad, felt even more wronged and cried even louder. "But it really hurts! I think I'm going to die from the pain!"
Lauren angrily pushed Dominick away. "What kind of father are you? Sonny's in so much pain, and you're still scolding him?"
It was at that moment that Dominick realized how overly spoiled Grayson had been by his mother, to the point where the boy seemed unable to handle any kind of hardship.
Both of them had been through this traumatic experience, both had been injured. Although Serena's injuries weren't as severe as Grayson's, she was only three years old, and after going through such a terrifying ordeal, she hadn't cried out or thrown a tantrum.
If she did cry, it was just quietly, tears in her eyes. She would silently wipe them away. She was so well-behaved that it was heartbreaking.
Thinking about how sweet and understanding Serena was, and that she was Paisley and Max's daughter, Dominick felt a pang in his heart.
It was as though his heart had shattered into pieces, and even when pieced together, there were cracks all over it. It wasn't fatal, but the pain was unbearable.
So, if back then, he hadn't been so focused on work, hadn't neglected Paisley and his family, hadn't allowed his family to coddle and spoil Sonny so much. Wouldn't everything be different now?
On the way to the hospital, Paisley almost counted the seconds as she rushed there. Each red light they had to wait at filled her with anxiety. Fortunately, Max's excellent driving skills brought the car to the hospital in no time.
As soon as the car came to a stop and the locks clicked open, Leo yanked the door open from the outside. Only when Paisley got out of the car did she notice that Leo, along with others, had been tailing Max's car the entire way.
"Thank you," she said hurriedly to Max before rushing toward the emergency center without another word.
Max got out of the car as well, tossing the car keys to Leo. "I'll go take a look."
Leo threw the keys to one of his subordinates and quickly followed Max. "Boss, it's been ages since you last drove, hasn't it?" Since Max's injury, he had rarely driven himself.
Max cast a sidelong glance at Leo before quickening his pace to catch up with Paisley. Leo stood in place for a moment, muttering to himself, "Alright, maybe I'm being too chatty again."
